    I found that raising the stringer pieces up using blocks seemed to give me better control of the clamps and a better view of the amount of 'squeeze-out' the joint had.

    I used some ordinary waxed paper below the scarfed joint in the engine stringers for the little runabout I'm building.

    That was used on my workbench surface, but would be too slippery...
