Mold release and two part casting resin?
I would agree with other that is most likely moisture that is trying to evaporate out. Seen this a lot in old canvas canoes in which people have put good varnish over bad and once it heats up, the...
Is there any product that can remove a small stain on clean fiberglass cloth before it is used for clear coating. Will any attempt also damage the sizing and leave a mark anyways? Customer may have...
As the Vancouver Wooden Boat Society works hard to establish the new wooden boat center in greater Vancouver, Canada, they are offering small courses for the beginner woodworker and boat builder. ...
Cover will be for Elfyn which is in another thread. Customer has chosen Sunbrella and will advise to coat the cover every few years. Not sure if stored outside or inside. That will be up to owner....
Looking for review from actual owners who have used these products. Internet states Sunbrella is longer lasting, but Weathermax appears to be less expensive. Don't mind paying more for Sunbrella if...
OK, the hull is not wood, but trying to see if anyone has specs on the Ranger Minto sail. A kit can be bought to sew own original sail but considering adapting from original cat rig to standing lug...
We are going to bypass the drain plug for now. Can always add it later. For a new cover, I am setting up some supports for the main mast to act as a ridge beam. Need the company to start on the...
I am thinking it would be good idea to have a drain plug to be able to drain the boat when loaded onto the trailer. But all of the brass ones need a #8 screw to hold base plate in place and hull...
Boat rolled over for final paint and sheer stripe.

We are going with fore and aft floorboards rather than the traditional cross planking. 3 sections that will easily lift out for cleaning and maintenance. Or to retrieve your favorite fishing lure or...
Yes, in Coquitlam. I actually rarely put boats in the water locally. Too much effort with little place to find peace and serenity. I take my small boats to the interior lakes and enjoy fly...
Looking to put side seats to go between the two thwarts for sitting on the sides while sailing. I have them dry fit, but was wondering how wide they should be. What is the minimum width one feels...
I am now working on the spars for Elfyn. After marking with spar gauge and shaping with the power planer, I figured it was time to make a sanding drum. I will have a few more videos out soon.123072...
Thanks. Some channels are good entertainment and a lot of work have gone into producing them. Many of them I watch. I try to keep my videos simple and informative should someone be building...
We had around 20 small boats at the first open house for the new wooden boat center in New Westminster, BC, Canada. Hundreds of people toured the facility and viewed the boats. We are adding photos...
I now have the fore and aft bulkhead compartments in and am now working on the sailing components. Ordered the special rudder hardware from Classic Marine in the UK and mast lumber has arrived. And...
That was my thought as well. The mast step and partner do not seem in a logical location and do not look original. However the one and only owner says he bought it like this from the builder.
Looking for any info possible. Picked up a small sailing pram that I plan to fix up. Owned by same family from new for 60 years and reported to have been built in Victoria, B.C. She is 6'8" with...
Still looking for some more small boats to add to our display at the new Wooden Boat Center in New Westminster. We have some now listed on our web site.
A whole bunch of work begins on the interior of Elfyn, now that the gunwales are on. Thwarts and framing for the fore and aft compartments. Also risers installed as we are going with wrap around...
With the wooden boat festival cancelled in Vancouver Canada, the Wooden Boat Society is organizing a small boat rendezvous for Sept 24, 2022. It will be held at the new wooden boat center in New...
Finally got the gunwales/guards in with the spacers and uploaded a video on my channel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdQZKnVu_CQ&t=9s Now to work on the insides. So if one is putting the optional...
Now that I am back to work on this project, more photos and videos are coming with latest on YouTube now. Blocks are glued in and now I will mask off and paint around them before I finish up the...
Pieces are not glued in yet just set up to see how it looks. We did not want to look at edge grain of ply so I have glued on a thin strip of yellow cedar which will add a bit of colour between the...
Elfyn is upright, fillets are in and permanent frames installed. Working on guards and inwales. We decided to go with blocking and spacers for the inwale.

Yes the aft frame would have to be cut for a longer box. The hull is already planked and rolled with frames in place, so not an option to look at another design. Took him two years to decide on...
Customer had inquiries as to could it be done as I believe he has seen it on other Oughtred designs or YouTube videos? Alas, the internet and too much information. I did send an inquiry to Oughtred...
As I work on Oughtred's Elfyn I was asked about modifying the plans for a pivot up dagger board and rudder. Plans show one piece for each. Solo sailor with limited experience worried about managing...
Thanks. Yes Glue/Ply. Frames were laminated on forms prior to build and set aside. They fit in the planked hull pretty good without hardly any need to pull in planking. And yes frames do not touch...
I have another thread on my build of Elfyn, but quick question on installing permanent laminated frames. Glued in with epoxy to wherever they land on planking?
Any suggestions on insurance companies in BC, Canada that are willing to insure wooden boats?
All the fillets are in, the hull has been sanded and the first coat of primer went on. First two strakes will be white, but maybe we paint the sheer strake another colour.

Elfyn is all planked up with outside stems, keel and rub guards installed. Looking forward to getting her painted and rolled.

Thanks. Shop is small and a bit crowded and very messy right now, but it works. The other boat is a "Black Pearl" kayak underway for a customer. Latest video on progress to date just uploaded this...
"Elfyn" now has two planks on.

We are on to planking. Took a while for the marine ply to come in so could not proceed for the last few weeks. Here I am just making pattern for garboard plank. Also third video up on YouTube...

Do you have an HIN issued in USA for a home built? If so, it should be acceptable in Canada and visa versa. In Canada it is national, not by individual provinces. If you are inquiring about...
The boats were traditional build with lapstrake (clinker) planking. One sits on a dock the other is trailered on bunks.
The last few traditional boats that I built (cedar planking, rivets, frames, etc.) are basically trailer boats that were only launched for day trips. I did use boat caulk between the planking and...
Thanks for the info. We are back to considering glue ply on this one. With the wide planks, I am guessing the full size patterns will have the chines lined out for the planks, rather than round...
Anyone ever built a Elfyn or Elf in traditional planking, rivets, steam bent frames versus glue ply? Does the shape even lend to this method?
We are getting close to the finish line on this one. I have the centerboard box framed in, hull varnished and stem band on. Hopefully this is the last time she will be upside down. By this time...
As I move towards rigging the skiff up with cleats, pulleys, and the like, does anyone have a picture of how they did their small sail skiff? Looking at options and location of things. Will add...
