Epoxy can get very hot. Did you not feel the heat as you applied?
Hey all, could you post up pictures of different frames etc. that have been built to shape by laminating?
I am about to try this and some visuals would help me out greatly.
Thanks

I have a source for fresh cut Ash from Ontario through an Arborist friend.
What are the opinions of the group on Ash for boat building purposes?
Thank you
A
many sources all in the US unfortnately. I no longer have a need but thank you.
I have a question about the Ketch rigging? Is the aft mast called a mizzen? I was under the impression a mizzen was smaller and run off the transom. I have heard them referred to as "aft main" and...
I don't think I'd ever make a CB from Ply. As Ron pointed out there is too much moisture in those tight areas. Similarily with floors, I don't think ply would suffice as Thorne has shown us.
Is anyone aware of a supplier in Canada for water Decal Printer paper? I found BelDecal in the US but their shipping rates are rediculous.
Thanks
I'll third that.
For one application where I didn't want to use foam or deal with foam issues I saved up about 60 plastic pop bottles and use those in the space.
much lighter and easier to deal with than foam.
Thanks for the advice. I plan to use a deck hatch for each of the bulkheads.
I had seen you're site before and appreciate that you have photo-documented each stage of construction. It is...
Thorne, Yes the design plans for the BlueJay doesn't have bulkheads however with the research I have done with the previous owner we have not been able to positively identify the boat but it looks...
I don't think there is a "long term" for this boat. At least not in the generational or decade sense. If it will last 5-10 years that is excellent.
The boat is a BlueJay - 12' dinghy. the...
Charlie this is encouraging. I have been donated a small sailboat, well maybe less donated and more rescued from the trash. At any rate it needs only a new deck and some bulkheads to stiffen it up....
would regular maple ply coated in epoxy used as a bulkhead be sufficient to use instead of Marine Ply?
Not planning on doing this but was just wondering because epoxy is so well used to...
Anyone have pictures of build of this workboat?
I have seen the thread here on it already and did my due diligence to search the internet of stories about this vessel, and have read Chappelle's...
thanks everyone.
Perhaps I should have preceeded with that it is NOT for boat applications so issues related to strength/stress will be relatively mute.
was thinking of running a 1/8 strip down the middle of a WRC...
any comments on laminating WRC and Maple ?
would the different hardness of the woods create a weak glue joint?
is there any discernable weakness in combining these two species?
etc etc...
...
yep, that's excatly what's happening and how I have been dealing with the issue. It works well enough and I guess I'll just keep doing it this way.
thanks!
best bench i've ever seen
seen it. Thanks though.
If I may piggy back on this thread.
I am beggining a BlueJay restoration in a few weeks and It would be nice to see some pictures of other wooden BlueJay's out there.
The class association...
I don't think moisture is an issue. These planks were purchased over a year ago and have been air drying since.
I'm not specifically speaking of raised grain due to moisture but more about areas...
i'm having trouble with cedar. I am well aquianted with the water and finish sand to raise the grain but there are still areas of "fuzz" or loose grain that will fill up with varnishing.
I guess...
looks like a time they'll remember forever.
What is that winch on the console in front of the compas?
I spcifically thinking of areas where grain pops out and leaves the finish of the wood more open than other areas.
I have heard of wet sanding with Linseed oil to create a paste of wood dust to...
Any suggestions/adivce on a home build vacuum pump?
is has to do with performance charateristics more than anything.
A wider boat will have better downwind sailing characteristics but will not be as good going into the wind.
take a look at the...
Apparently this is a rare size. Anyone have suggestions on a good source that may have this size?
Alternatively, would a 67" 1/2 work?
The deck is in need of full replacement. In regards to the pricing from S&S, I have heard of this before and can only assume it is the reason that some aspects of this boat are not true to the...
haha yes.
perhaps I should have clarified I was looking for comments on restoration experiences.
Looking for any restoration pics or comments on this boat.
Thanks Guys.
Nice JOb!
I restored the porch on my old Victorian House last year and used a special low viscosity epoxy to inject into the dryed out pillars.
It was applied into drill holes with a syringe and had...
this is a very nice boat. Where can I get plans?
What's nice about Linseed oil is that after time it kind of congeals. It becomes a little waxy.
The advantage of this and why I use it is that not only does it fill the wood fibres like all oils...
It is possible to build a chine-less hull with Plywood. I saw a few mentioned of that advantage with Cedar above. While I am not a fan of Plywood I have seen some smooth curves done by laying up...
interesting. thanks!
it's for production.
Agreed, the visual component make this a worthwhile attempt. There will be no design for a hollow shaft, shaft flex is a neccesary feature of a paddle.
I don't make racing paddles, mine are built...
the first potential advantage is what you have eluded to above. I have never seen this either therefore in my mind it should be attempted.
second potential advantage is ability to use different...
Any suggestions on jigs or techniques to cut a splice joint?
the application of this joint will be similar to its use in a cricket bat but will be applied to canoe paddles.

I would think spray would be the best. You can get pretty decent prices at Home Depot...they are without compressors and I don't know the difference in quality but I would assume compressor spray...
I would go with these as they were my first and are still the most currently used.
Stanley No.9 1/2...
I was discussing foam flotation with a friend recently and they mentioned that instead of foam they had used many 2 litre plastic bottles in the compartments.
year for year the bottles work out...
The simple beauty of chisels is that you can use them to make their own caps out of any wood scraps you have lying around.
Thanks!!!
