Look for a drop axle trailer or have one made, the boat will sit lower.

Your choice of brand will probably come down to what finish color you want. We have used Kirby, Interlux, Pettit, Wet Edge, Rustoleum and Valspar Ultra 4000 with equal results. Stick with the same...

When you look at the difference between paying for cheaper wood and quality wood, and the relatively small amount you will need to buy, there is not a big difference. For example you might pay $35...
Might depend on which color paint you plan to use. Our experience, primer color is what makes more of a difference.
I spoke to Jared at World Panel in Windsor today about some wood that we may need, they sell a selection of hardwoods as well. And their shipping cost would probably be in the $150-200 range to get...
Good idea on calling around local. We got our plywood from a trim and cabinet maker, he would add our marine ply to his hardwood order and we'd help cut the cost of his shipping. He had some nice...
Lots of interesting and educational boatbuilder stuff goin on there. I like how you are plugging as you go along, the boats that end up in the porcupine stage seem daunting.
We endorse all of the tips for carrying ply on a rooftop, and have some nice Sherpak Quick Loops that make good tiedown points. Now is the time to check under you car to see if there are any tiedown...
Small Boats Monthly Editor Chris Cunningham shared some great ideas in the Dec 2021 issue: https://smallboatsmonthly.com/article/refuge-in-the-rain/
Looking good so far. As for materials, 600 screws may be less expensive and quicker to attain for a novice builder than a seasoned woodworker who has metal or wooden clamps built from scrap. Also...

You're welcome. The digital download is a great read, he covers a lot of the pros, cons and differences of a traditional build vs glued lapstrake, rivets vs screws, etc...
Their website is working, I just purchased the NTS Boatbuilding In Pictures digital download and it arrived in my email inbox immediately. Spoke to Mr Simmons this morning, they are plugging and...
The Day Sailer is very easy to control, we've had one in the family for almost 30 years. We added a tabernacle to the mast, topping lift, sail slugs and a roller furler for the jib, these...
Well there's boats everywhere, and plenty of Mom and Pop lumber stores. There's one of the oldest Marine Railways in the country in Seaford, Smith's and the Museum in Deltaville is currently...
Great job. Resist the urge to cut windows into the new sides and put in $4100 of electrical service into it...unlike what I did...
Would something wood-looking like Trex work for a rubrail?
I see a WoodenBoat Launchings hat in your future...looking forward to see how you work the hatch closures.
You're around 6 feet right? I've been pondering a kayak design for the family, our sons...
What are you varnishing? We like Halcyon on small boat blades and would use it again due to quick recoat time and easy cleanup. It will need to prove its longevity before a lot of folks folks would...

Hi Robert
Glad you enjoy Small Boats as much as we do. We enjoy writing for the digital parent Small Boats Magazine and for the past few years we have been thrilled to see a few of our boats in...

You're welcome. Penobscots rule the World!
I'd scuff the rustoleum so the new coatings have something to grip onto, and then consider what paint you intend to use. I you can, stick with the same brand of paint, primer and fairing compound.
Fantastic construction and beautiful choice of finish. The fun part of the P14 is they are a dream to row and then set sail when the mood strikes. Huzzah!

Nice looking boat and great start on the build. Does she run flat bottom aft or is there some keel or strakes back there?
You mentioned lift/trim, our Suzuki 25 has tilt/trim. We had our Suzuki...
We used #10 silicone bronze wood screws and thickened epoxy. 2016 build and everything is still attached and leak free. We drilled countersunk pilot holes into the white oak and cypress for the...
No, we used a bolt so the center board could swivel....that was an attempt at humor. We used thickened epoxy and silicone bronze screws to attach out centerboard/centreplate trunk/well to the keel....
THIXO is basically the same as any other thickened epoxy, but what we like about it is that it comes in a caulk cartridge. We can dispense it with a High Thrust 18:1 ratio caulk gun through the...
We used TotalBoat THIXO on our Penobscot 14. 4 seasons in and she's sailing/rowing happily along.

Old School you can use thickened paint and a strip of canvas/duck.
Great work Charlie
The boat looks great, and the build well supported by your great "shop" layout. Seems you can park a car in there as well, I don't know if that is fair or not....
Thank you...
Great looking maker space, don't know how you fit your imagination in there though :)

Hi Brad
You're welcome. She did not cut on the 45, she tore 1 inch strips across the grain on 45 inch wide fabric. 45 inch was a good length to manipulate. She cuts the selvage because that edge...
Epoxy is certainly not the way to go for your replica. I think you'l end up with some sort of "Uncle Gabe's" dutchman concoction that was considered a trade secret, but most likely was made from...

On one boat we placed a spare bunk next to the trailer bunk and jacked up the 900 pound Drascombe Lugger a bit so we could paint over the bunk.
