I get what you are saying, but with the downhaul the luff is tight and not blowing out to windward.
I think I'll just work on the mast, mast partner, and mast step to see if I can't get the mast...
Might you mean the "luff of the sail" lining up with the aft side of the mast? If so, then yes, the luff of the sail rides on the aft side of the mast.
The luff of my sail attaches to the mast at...
I have a Penrose 15 sailboat with a sprit sail rig (see here: http://forum.woodenboat.com/showthread.php?279638-Penrose-16-sailing-rowing-skiff-has-anyone-heard-of-this-design)
When I change...
Hey thanks for the pic of the Mayfly. Looks great!!
Do you have any pics of your Mayfly 14?
Do you have any pics/diagrams of the gunwale to gunwale sheet rigging?
Tom... thanks for the comments. Indeed I have changed the sheeting on the boat to resemble the sheeting on a Melonseed (although the Melonseed has a boom which I do not). The sheet attaches to clew...
Thank you both for the comments. I've had her out twice now on a small lake. I really like the simplicity of the sprit rig and she sails nicely.
I can sit on the rear cockpit seats or sit on the...
I am posting this thread again... don't know why it was "closed."
I purchased a very nice wooden sailboat called a Penrose 16. Please see the photos.
Very nicely done boat. Has a sprit sail....
I recently purchased the pictured boat in Portland, Oregon.
The listing described it as a Penrose 16. I have not been able to find any info on this design.
The listing said that the boat was built...
Regarding the shrink wrap suggestion, Are you talking about that shrink wrap that you put on whatever and then heat it with a blow dryer?
Thanks for the comments so far. The boat is a fiberglass Laguna Windrose 24. These boats came with built-in positive floatation in the form of these foam blocks.
The foam is of the "styrofoam...
...something that will keep them from slowly disintegrating into small styrofoam balls?
They are still in pretty good shape/not holding any water... just getting old and shedding the little...
What other sailboat databases are there? I know of only sailboatdata.com .

Many thanks!
Thanks, Todd, for that explanation. So positioning the boom a bit higher than the clew is the place it needs to ride. And I see why now... and how... it is that these sprit booms produce the...
In rigging Leg O Mutton sail, one end of the boom is attached at the clew, and the other end extends forward extending past the mast.
Two questions:
1. How high up the mast above the tack...
The boat listing no longer appears on craigslist.
Peter... thanks for the link re the Ostkust. I had never heard of that till now. Wow what a boat this could be. I think that's what it might be... and Ostkust.
Looks similar, huh? What would it take to restore that boat? Seems one would have to take off all the planks, deconstruct it and then reconstruct it.
Here's the link to a few more pics of it:

That's so sweet!! Glad you got to experience that. I'm liking the "long oar" idea which others have also mentioned. The Sculmatix (see Duckworks) could be used with your long oar, too, I think. ...
Thanks for the replies so far... and for sharing your experiences without using an engine.
However, I am interested in details regarding your sweep, Yuloh, oars, and whatever else you actually use...

I have read through much of the above thread about sailing without an engine. A great read.
For those who are sailing...
Bob... when I set it outside in the sun it is completely open... nothing covering it, it dried it out... for the time it was in the sun. Then I moved it back into the carport. The carport, even...
Thanks for the comments so far. Sounds like I'm doing most of what's been suggested.
I recently acquired this Gunning Dory as discussed here: http://forum.woodenboat.com/showthread.php?220591-What-kind-of-Dory-sailboat-is-this
This boat has absorbed a bit of water... but there is...
OK, I measured the length of the cockpit and it's about 12' 3". Both ends of the boat are decked. But looks like it just might fit inside. I'll do some more sprit sail research. And thanks for...

Recently I acquired a dory along with the trailer I wanted. It turns out that the dory is likely a Gunning Dory as discussed here: ...
Daniel... yes it looks pretty close to that.
I may take some better pics and provide the link. I haven't figured out how you guys post pics in the message body yet. I am having google host my...
Good idea... thanks.
From the previous posted reply from Baxter & Cicero, sounds like you are correct.
Can someone suggest what a "stock" sail would have been for this boat? Or... as I asked previously, can a lug...
Yes, I have the book... borrowed from a friend. Will look for the unnamed boat you mentioned.
Yes, this might be it... or some closely derived version.
The mast is quite long and heavy. And I would have a tough time stepping this each time. How would a balance lug sail of about 90+ sq ft...
I received a reply from Baxter & Cicero regarding the sail. Here is their reply:
"That is a Snowbird sail. There was a fleet of them around here as far back as 1920's. It may have been cut down...
It's similar to that Nick... but not identical. The image you posted I see is a Swampscott.

+1 on the Titebond 3. I am building a Mayfly 16 using Titebond 3 in place of epoxy. I have coated the side planks and bulkheads and transom in Titebond 3 and am awaiting warmer/dryer temps here on...
Thanks again, Todd, for the confirmation of my understanding. I've read of the Sailmaker's Apprentice... looks like a good, thorough book. I've also got a copy of your "Lug sail building"...
Thanks, Todd, for explaining what "more data" means. I am building a Mayfly 16 sailboat (Jim Michalak design) which has plans for a balance lug sail. I have the mainsail from a Butterfly sailboat. ...

There you go
Can I use an already made sail to cut/make a lug sail for a boat I'm building?
Thanks.
Workability, time for adhesive setup, and easy cleanup are all important in beginning a project, during a project, and at the end of a project. I'm sure that your repair will be fine given the use,...

Interesting, Nick. I see lots of sailboats with wide transoms. What gives here? Some of Jim Michalak's designs have a wider transom. For example, the Family Skiff has a max beam of 66" and tapers...

I'm looking to convert a wooden dinghy into a sailing dinghy. Just looking for a sound hull, acceptable design, and will add a leeboard, rudder, mast step and proper sail.
