Le Tonk is what we are currently using other than a mix of linseed / pinetar.
So nice to use products without solvents.
Wait until you tell him he needs to wear a bikini for the youtube hits like many of the other channel visiting crew. :) :)
I really like your video content, more my interest. I would enjoy...
So your dad has crew that takes a boat to various tropical locations and he just flies in for vacation. Well played Mr Madison, well played (senior).
:) :) :)
I feel like that when I see SV Seeker stuff - being a metal boat guy :)
Hi ,
So we anchored for the first time with our fisherman anchor.... the ground tackle handling was anything but graceful. Luckily there was nobody around to witness our foolery. I've googled around...
It's been a crazy few days, but she floats. Pretty much perfectly on the waterline as expected at this point (a bit stern down), we still have 12,000lbs of internal ballast + spars to go !

Hey J,
While I'm busy thinking or extra threads for you to start (more work), I was wondering if you could give a quick summary of your ships systems, likes, dislikes and things you would do...
Just our of interest, how much propane do you carry and what do you estimate as a burn rate ? I'm paranoid that I would need to get to the point of cold brew coffee.....
Thanks for the...
There has been a change of plans. It's now June 4th. Our Ministry of Transportation was slow to issue an oversized permit for the trucking.

Hi ,
Thanks for the great comments !
Alan - the only plan right now is to get her rigged and sailing on the great lakes. We've always talked about attending the Brest maritime festival in...
Hi,
Been on the forum getting good rigging and wood working tips and techniques, so just wanted to extend an invitation to our boat launching next week. It's not a wooden boat, so I usually don't...
To be fair, strip built hulls really are a composite build of fibre and resin. It doesn't really matter that the fibre isn't glass based right :) :)
I think our hull should have been labelled as...
Looking forward to see the photos from when you portaged Julia across the island :) Great photos and writing.

Hi,
Another option... We purchased a pile of 3 ring binder pencil cases with windows. Works great, you can see what is inside, can open one at a time and just grab the sizes you need for each job....
I've been checking their tracking each morning with my coffee. Looks like they did very well crossing the doldrums !

Interestingly enough this photo came up in my Facebook feed. The "Algorithm" is working well. Our booms are pretty similar.

Hi,
Quick question / survey for suggestions for nails/tacks to hold leather on gaff jaws and booms. Jaws are oak.
1) Wide head roofing nails (11guage, 1" long 3/8" head diameter, round shank) ...
March 2020 I could either invest in retirement savings or a big stack of beautiful air dried, quarter sawn white oak from massive old tree. It had been stickered and dried perfectly for 6 years. In...

Hi,
Not sure if everyone is aware that there is a good new boat youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/madisonboatworks
I'm not sure if there is hope that this could become a revenue...
Good insulation. Cozy and warm down below with the fire going ! We are getting a bit more snow tomorrow after digging out this morning. 2 Months to spring....

We soaked ours in heated linseed oil (60 deg c) for a few days, let dry and coated with Le Tonk. They haven't been in service yet, so I can give feed back on how this process works.

I think the most critical part is grinding fresh beans. A good hand grinder goes a long way. Starting with feel good beans is good too. We've been using Cafe william beans for a while now, so it was...
It's been almost a month since the last post. How long do you figure until they make landfall in Hawaii ?
Cheers,
Mark
Good timing on this thread for me. We are going to need to figure this out next spring !

Hey Nick,
I've been thinking a bit about this scaling thing, and my hypothesis is based on some sort of analogy to a "Reynolds Number". The "fluid" (sand / mud / gravel) size doesn't also scale...
I mix small amounts of epoxy by weight all the time for little jobs. We have a spread sheet with the gear that has mixing ratios for each gram of base up to a couple "pumps". When I do need a full...
I'm with Thad. I'll add that you can warm the raw linseed oil and mix in some pine tar !
Cheers,
Mark
You are correct. My apologies. It is indeed a varnish, but it's so nice to work with !

Mark
Final picture. Had to check out the fit.

Keep in mind they did coat the inside with Le Tonk... it's a completely different thing from polyurethane varnishes. It's just pure linseed and tung oil. It's what we've been using on all our wood...
Why not just build a round or oval mast and use soft eyes around it ?

Mark
Ha ! We bought one of his first No 2 windlasses - it's just awesome.
Thanks for the favourable comments. I too think Murielle nailed the "design" on these. They are very pleasing to the eye. They are based off the Herreshoff but the palm surface is a bit bigger and...
Things were put aside for a bit. Folding stock was completed today. Just need to go out for galvanizing now.

I check in most days to look for an update on this thread, usually with mixed emotions. On one hand I hope to see the photos and read the updates, but part of me thinks that if there are no updates...
Next up... a storm anchor... :) (that might wait until next year, these should see us fine next summer)

We are aware that this boat is going to mean physical labour. We decided to go with the manageable workout each time we raise anchor vs the ***Fun*** it would be to have an electric or hydraulic unit...
Hi Bruce,
So what do you figure is right for a 30 ton boat ? We sort of consider these anchors as "lunch hooks" and are planning on making up something else.
We have 1/2" high test chain, at...
Yes, but there *should* be enough space in the fit, based on galvanizing thickness estimates.....
The couple that come apart are almost complete.

Murielle is making a couple up that separate for stowage, one will be welded solid.
