Friggin' with the riggin'
I’ve got a start on rigging the sails. Just the main for now – the other spars are not even started yet. I just had to see how the sail looks on there. I got a nice low...
Thanks all
Parachute cord looks good.
What would be the better choice - nylon or polyester?
Looks like some comes round and some flat. I'm pretty sure round is the right choice there.
Small slippery line - I was using nylon mason's twine on my experiments today. maybe that's why it went up and down so smooth. ?
My 1/4" line probably won't work that way, huh?
It's funny how my thoughts on an idea can change sometimes. I had thought that I wanted to attach my sails with robands and wanted no part of lacing. Now after trying this lacing technique, I think...
Ditto
I've just done the same and I added framing to my bottom. 1/4" is too scary thin. And underlayment is 3 ply making it scarier. I framed and used 3/8" ply floorboards on top.
I've still got a little ways to go yet. I have to make the jib mast and sprit, and the rudder. My rigging is on it's way to me now. And I've got a little vacation to squeeze in Memorial Day weekend -...
Nice to get an update on Little Egret. The sails look good.
The rowing was a success on the first two outings. So I mounted up my 30 pound thrust trolling motor to give it a try. I’ve had two outings with the motor. It works pretty good. She glides along...
What would you call your creation? -- A skiffyak? --- The Yakskiff?
The second pic especially, looks pretty good actually. Good luck with it.
Tim
Soon the postman will be bringing me some rigging schtuff |:)
Got my order in to Duckworks for that today.
I also epoxy & graphite/silica coated the tenon on my main mast. The step was done the...
Thanks for the info. Both sharp boats, and I like the rigs on both as well.
Tim
Well, I'm fully registered and legal. That feels good. Not too happy about having to put those registration numbers on the sides of my new boat, but what are you gonna do? :p No pics. Too sad.
...
Have you thought about an offset centerboard or daggerboard? Just enough to clear the rear mast?
We need a build thread either way, ya know... :D

I’ve been working mostly on the spars lately. The main mast is fully shaped now, as well as the main’s sprit. So – I’ve got a jib mast and sprit to go yet. They are much smaller so should be done a...
holzbt, this boat deserves it's own thread.
and what about her sister there at the dock - any more on that one too? in another thread maybe?
One step closer.
I got my HIN from the division of watercraft. Took the boat out for the inspection Monday, and went back Tuesday to pick up the tags. The whole process was actually a pleasure -...
Pix like that certainly aren't boring - at all! Y>Y>
Terrific!
When you feel like it I'd like to hear some explanation of how the rig is adjusted. It's very unique. I like that.
Thanks, and thanks for the tip. I was going to try something on the leather. They're a bit squeeky now, leather against leather. Not too tight though - I can turn them easily. I just wanted to get...
Thanks Jim
...now where did those 'ores go?...
:d
I hope to be sailing her in one month - or less - we'll see.
Tim
Thanks Vern
We must be on the same page today - I'm posting on your thread as your posting on mine.
That means neither one of us is getting our boat done...:p
Quick work on the rudder. Looks good. I just came in to take a break myself - mast shaping today.
Ordering sails..... any projection on a launch date? This summer?
Sorta like the see food diet?
I see food and I eat it.
Thank you all.
Hopping aboard and putting my faith in a boat I built myself is a pretty special feeling.
You guys helped me build this boat --- I never would have come even this far without this...
I used Boatlife on mine - through bolted and screws.
Today was my first time in the water. Not a drop inside the boat.
Sailing stresses have not been placed on the trunk yet, but i'm confident it...
It floats!
I finally got her in the water this morning. I’m gonna call it an “unofficial launch”. But I had to see her float and try out the oars. All went well. She rode on the trailer just nice...
It really looks beautiful in the water. You must be very happy. I think the trim looks right on with two - rowing or as a passenger. One up, the rear rowing position looks very far aft to me. Of...
Lots of progress there Vernon. Looking good as always.
Seen this thread?

John Gardner's Building Classic Small Craft is a book well worth getting.
Getting the oars setup today. They are just a cheap, sporting goods store set of Caviness oars. I think I paid 15 bucks apiece for them in the off season a couple years ago. They have some damage...
No, that's a 1/4 scale lofting that I did myself. It's based on Parker's design - I shrunk the 16 footer and added a bit here and there (freeboard & beam) to suit.
Keep in mind that you'll need to drill 2 perfectly parallel holes if you install the u-bolt type. May not be so simple...
The single will be more or less foolproof.
Thanks guys.
I've got one sprit shaped. Working towards the rest of the spars. The centerboard can drop in through the top - maybe I'll go do that now. It's a beautiful sunny day out there now. And...
All the colors were picked off from a Kirby's color chart. I took my chart to the big box store and matched up as close as posibble to: Kirby's Green/Gray for the hull,- the interior color is...
I'll enjoy watching another one come together.
Thanks for posting.
Tim
I’ve finished up the paint over the past week or so. What do you think of the colors? The floorboards need paint yet.
Damned if that profile shot doesn't look just like the lines drawing! Maybe...
Had to wait 'til I finished painting it to post, but this is my favorite right now.
A proper in the water shot will be available...
I got the boat off the strongback and onto the trailer today. I had to make one minor adjustment to the height of one of the rollers and fine adjust the bunks. She fits the trailer well, I think. The...
Wow! I hope I can knock out my spars anywheres near as quick as you Vernon.
You got a membership to Starbucks or somethin'?
Looking good - keep at it.
Don't sweat the time frame - my build is way behind where I thought I would be in the beginning, but it's cool...
Tim
Thanks, guys.
I got the trailer all set up and painted today.
One step closer to that launching ramp :)
Well, I retired my old FG sailboat. I took her off the trailer and stored her out behind the barn for now. Kinda sad in a way, but exciting too. Not sure if I’ll want to keep her yet or not. I did...
Reminds me of when I built my kayaks - doing the lashings with sinew - my fingers were hurting for a week.
Lots of spar work for this boat. Something for future builders to consider.
Keep at it.
Tim
Now the decks have been glassed and the coaming installed. The purple skirt will be gone for good soon. A little sanding and paint and a few more loose ends to tie up and she’ll be ready to row....
Thank you Ian and Nick for posting this. I ordered the article for myself and it looks like enough to build from at first glance.
I know what my next build is gonna be! Full size of course. Now to...
