Yes. I used my electric adze (4" grinder) to round off the bottom end of the rod at the point of conjunction where the sides, bottom, keel tip and stem all meet. This gave me a clean fine...
Exactly why I did it that way...plus, it gave a clean, uniform radius to the stem, with little fairing to deal with. You may be able to see how it finished out in the attached photo, taken during...
I agree that it ain't broke; I'm just trying to make sure that it never does! I was simply trying to show how I approached a small problem that I encountered during that phase of my build. That's...
During my 18 ft. Lumberyard Skiff build, when I got to finishing out the bow/stem area before xynol/glassing the hull, I was stumped (briefly) on how to reinforce the bow where the ends of the...
As another bit of unsolicited advice on boatbuilding plywood (my Ha'Penny's worth):
When building my first big boat (40 ft. custom all solid 'glass hull w/ balsa-cored deck) in the late '70s, I was...
As a far, far aside - this mention of Grolsch beer bottles brings back memories of once, in my much younger days as a struggling medical researcher, I decided to try brewing my own beer (with the...

Thanks for your comments! I will be the first to agree that the pilothouse would definately look MUCH better on a longer, larger hull, but as I stated somewhere earlier, I'm limited (on...
Hey Skiff Man -
Thanks for all the power-requirement calculations; they seem to be right in line with what I had "guesstimated", and that's why I am planning on getting at least a 40, and...
Thanks, Nick. Yeah, I should have checked the photos as posted, but it was a long day, and I already had a few rums under my belt!
Funny, but when I posted them on a different forum (Downeast Boat...
(RE-POSTED WITH PHOTOS CORRECTED)
After a day of prep fabricating the posts & beam support structures, I borrowed a pair of come-along hoists, pulled out some heavy rope, and started the process....
Finally finished the hull painting; many delays due to weather up here on the bold coast. The bow-on photo looks distorted due to the camera angle... she's really not as narrow as the shot makes it...
JUst finished 2nd coat of EZPoxy painton topsides; next is the 2 -1/2" wide white boot stripe, then I'll flip her over.
Better angle shot. Finish looks OK if you aren't too close (it will mostly be underwater anyway!)
Finally finished the bottom. 2 coats of epoxy/graphite, sanded to 220 between coats. Next is to re-mask the WL and prime/high-build the topsides for the final EZ-Poxy.
Yes, you are right; today I'm going back and re-doing most of the seams with a little more epoxy/cabosil fillet. I'm not worried about the glue bond though, it oozed out all around. it was a long...
I figured that there was a great story behind that bell! Can't wait until we see where the bell goes on your new sailboat, and especially hear about how she "Earned" it! BTW... Great pic of your...
OK, Steve... you've got me. What the Heck is that little bell doing attached to your bow eye???
I agree with what Steve did. On my 18 ft. flat-bottom skiff, I chose to install a centerline keel/shoe, and parallel runners/skids similar to what Steve shows in his pictures. My hull bottom is...
Thanks for the compliments! And, yes, the USCG 41 has always looked very "Salty" to me. Actually, my last paying gig was as a maritime security consultant to the DHS Port Security Grant Program,...
I'm going to probably use pre-cut closed-cell foam blocks, sealed inside the aft topside cockpit sides, P&S, floor-to sheer between the aft frames, as well as under the forward seat area. I'll...
In a prevoius post (Building/Repair Thread) - I posted a sketch of a little pilothouse skiff I am building up in Downeast Maine. As I expected, I got my fair share of comments on how it was too...
I did quite a bit of research on the Brockway-type skiff design before I started my project, and, IMHO, the plans that Walter Baron (Old Wharf Dory) drew for his "Lumber Yard Skiff" are very easy for...
Hello Skiff Man -
You are spot-on about the displacement numbers! during the design process I calculated the following:
<colgroup><col><col><col><col></colgroup><tbody>
ESTIMATED DISPLACEMENT...
Gray Duck -
Sorry, I had to re-post the drawings to another thread... see "Pilothouse Lumberyard Skiff - Sketch". Lots of interesting comments.
Cheers
Hey Autonomous, Thanks. Actually I quite liked the way the C-Dory fit a very usable pilothouse onto their hull, and it was one of the reasons I started looking into something similar on my little...
CORRECTION: Sorry - I meant to say "longitudial center of buoyancy" above.
Yes, John, the beam is carried much more aft than forward, and there is considerably less volume in the forward sections. Because of this, I will initially launch her without any house structure,...
Nick - A good idea, but, no I haven't done those calcs yet. Been too busy sanding & fairing! As soon as I get around to it, I'll post them. Based on my experience with similar-sized boats with...
I understand your comments, and am well aware of the performance constraints of my design. However, this hull is already built, and I'm looking forward to using it as built, limitations and all. If...
Interesting! I am actually putting an external keel running down the centerline, but more for grounding & trailer protection than for directional stability (however it may add a small amount of...
Skip - That's precisley why I'm going with this boat; I can't afford those expensive powerplants any more. I could actually use a 25 hp on this, if I didn't mind slower cruising speed. Even then...
Yes, you are correct, Skip... That was one of the many designs that influenced my thinking. I realize that it may not be for everybody, but the reasons I chose to go with the flat bottom is that (1)...
One of my previous builds. I co-designed this boat with Lee Creekmore, many years ago, and it was pretty successful in off-shore racing in Florida/Bahamas waters. Sorry for blasphamy; it was/is a...
I actually did look at many small Downeast designs (including the Bass boat style) before I came up with this design.
I am aware that conventional design wisdom says that a standing headroom...
Thanks for all the comments! The hull bottom is actually flat in the aft bottom, from the just forward of Bmax back to the transom, with a slight rocker forward of only 5" or so. I built a scale...
Sorry but I didn't sucessfully attach the drawings I wanted to share -
New member here, but old boatbuilder trying to stay active. I am currently building a highly-modified lumberyard skiff, based somewhat on Walter Baron's design concept. BTW, I highly reccommend...
