Its made to suck up water.

You need a "dry" suit to keep dry. Completely different thing and lots more expensive (or used to be).

Did you get the wet suit completely wet?
It won't keep you warm until it is soaked, and your body heat makes the water in the suit warm.
A dry wet suit is not much use.
