Truly lovely work, Scott. I can't wait to see her in person.

Truly lovely work, Scott. I can't wait to see her in person.
I'll be following this bit carefully since I have a similar challenge. This winter we are in the middle of remodeling a house we just bought, so not much new boat work to share.
I'm very happy to see you here. Peaceful is a 1939 boat, so I'm not sure how consistent the designs are, but I'm happy to share what I have. I also have some drawings of early 30's Cruisabouts that...
There is no shortcut that I have discovered. Decide if you like fumes and goo, or heat and dust and get on with it. I prefer heat gun followed by a lot of dust.
We did it more or less exactly this way including using Canvas Supply. We are 5 years in now, hopefully on the way to 35 or 40. The original canvas lasted 70 years in a covered slip.
My experience with SeaFin on teak deck chairs has not been good. Our chairs are in the weather 365 and take a lot of abuse. I've resigned to leave them unfinished.
Hi Chuck,
We used Petit 101 on the interior mixed with some Interlux Hatteras Off White. We've been pretty quiet in boat projects. We put a couple of coats of varnish on the cabinsides and...
Welcome to the forum and good luck. Others will be along soon with specific advice once you get into the project.
And before you know it you have a brand new boat. Don't ask me how I know this. :)
Good job redirecting the conversation. Lucky Luke is a master of this. Your project is a lot smaller than his. There are a couple of very good modelers on here. Hold out against the knuckleheads...
That will be an interesting experiment since sailing and motor cruising are very different. Jessica likes sailing for a little bit, but if she is really honest, I think she would say that she...
To quote our shipwright, "If one boat is the problem, a fleet is not the answer." Congratulations on selling Emma Kate. I hope she found an owner that cares for her even half as much as you did.
Nice work, Peter. Things are starting to come together. You took on a hell of a project to do in one pass. I like the way your rubbed effect is looking. It's making me second-guess my decision to...
I'm afraid to ask about this. I'd hate to be permanently replaced by a Festool. :)
Lovely wood, and a great effort cleaning it up. I always enjoy seeing your work.
We are about to start restoring an old house that has god-only-knows-what finishes on some wood bits, so I will give the Star Ten product a fair shake.
On the test surface in question, I would use the Milwaukee heat gun and a Pro Prep 1" scraper (sadly now unobtanium) 10 times out of 10.
This is the sort of thing that I love about this site, and the wooden boat community in general.
I echo Cogeniac's thoughts and offer Soy Gel as an alternative to the solvents tested. We've had great success with both. This thread title had a lot of promise. I was hoping for different...
I'm thinking either your least favorite one, or her most favorite. If that happened to be the same one, then all the better! :)
I'd make sure that at least one of those dogs has a primer-colored paw.
Good luck begins with knowing the thing that you are looking for when you see it. Congratulations on a great find! I look forward to seeing the amazing work that you will produce with such a fine...
Hey Peter, One tip that our pro painter gave us is to use gloss varnish for the build coats and then rubbed effect for the final coat or two. His line of thinking is that if you use rubbed effect...
Hopefully the new boat has a similar configuration. It's always interesting to drive boats when you don't know exactly how they are set up.
Ditto, Peter. I appreciate your posts and your advice more than most. Post when and where it suits you, but I will miss your insight and good work.
You can use 1-2" wide strips of Luan carved and planed to fit a space and tacked together with hot glue to template most things that occupy a single plane, and many compound curves as well.
We aren't planning to go up this year, but a number of PNW folks attend regularly. You should run into a good crowd of CYA folks.
Good progress, and thanks again for sharing.
I hope everything works out for the best. Good luck.
You've found a good bunch of folks on here by accident. If you are serious about keeping your boat, sailing it safely and maintaining it, then you will get a wealth of advice. We were in a similar...
The previous owner is perhaps really happy that he won't have to deal with the guys at the landfill. Hate to be a wet blanket, but this boat looks like a mess.
If you love this boat, then I would start making patterns for the parts that you will need to rebuild from scratch. Based on the few photos, I worry that there may be a lot of parts that need...
If you are using Alkyd paints, we've had great success with the Petit Hi Hide primer over white cedar. If memory serves, we used Interlux 100 over that.
Hi Pat, Give Steve at Blanchard Auto Electric a call and see if he has any ideas.
We use a good quality Milwaukee heat gun with a number of directional attachments and it has paid for itself a dozen times over. I strongly recommend it.
You'll have to wait for some of the old dogs on here to answer the question about unseen deterioration. Our policy was that if it looked good and the slot was solid enough to drive, then we put it...
I'd reuse those fasteners in a heartbeat.
Peaceful spent 70 years on the Tennessee River before coming to us, so it can be done.
Crew management is a challenge, particularly when the crew thinks she wears the admirals hat. The first afternoon that we took Peaceful out, some friends photographed us not only with fenders out,...
You should stow your fenders as soon as you leave the dock. Particularly for a photo opportunity. Otherwise people might start calling you interesting things like "pig farmer." Don't ask me how I...
Wow. You are doing a lot at once. Keep the faith!
That banquette set-up is really nice. I love how it converts into a dining area. I can say from experience that deciding not to go is a hard call, but better to save the boat and crew for another...
Maybe this is one of the secrets of why there are so many great wooden boats in the PNW. The high temp was about 75. We did have some late morning showers which made it a less than perfect...
Nothing says boatbuilding as much as knuckles with fresh blood.
Sure. Sawdust is a very old trick. When boats are put back in the water, old school shipwrights will often release sawdust under the hull. A big coffee can on the end of a long pole is a good way...
I'm far from a pro on this topic, but when we had Peaceful on the hard for 6 months, we could see through the seams in places. We put her back in the water and supported her in the slings for about...
Interesting. Tom is putting on a couple of coats of varnish for us this week. I may give him a call and talk about giving their varnish a try as well. Sorry for the minor thread hijack.
We'll repaint our topsides this Fall/Winter. I'm going to give Fine Paints of Europe some serious consideration.
When old dogs bark about new bones, I get interested. Thanks for the tip, Jay.
I use a very sharp chisel, but I make two passes. The first shallow pass confirms which way the grain is running so that the final cut doesn't run out beneath the plank surface. The second pass is...
