    So the white areas are a reflection and not colored? If possible you could mix some powder pigment with the varnish and fill the scratches with it. It might just come out if the grooves aren't deep...

    In my experience, it takes just a few tools to make a piece of furniture. It takes all the tools to repair it.

    My idea is to make thin, stable, sturdy, planking material that would be butt jointed, 2 1/2 inches or 3 inches wide. If possible.
