    I think Herreshoff considered the short gaffs as perhaps one of his better innovations. He included the short gaffs on many of his later cruising boats. I think his inspiration was his racing sloop...

    Eastern Cedar is a lot smaller than our wet coast red cedar...If you strip plank as has been suggested Eastern Cedar could do it well....I'd definitely strip plank in stead of carvel....

    Sailing onto a shallower patch is distinct in that sort of weather. I have seen it out near Sable Island on the east coast off Nova Scotia.
