There’s no reason for a sail training ship in European waters to turn her AIS off!
  3. Re: Navy blames sailor for Bonhomme Richard fire.

Rags are highly hazardous - oily rags are lethally dangerous.

  4. Re: Navy blames sailor for Bonhomme Richard fire.

I have never dry docked a ship without being worried about fire. And nor has anyone else, I’m quite sure.

The “Bonhomme Richard” had, afaik, recently undocked and been taken over again by the...
  5. Re: Happy birthday to Andrew Craig-Bennett…

My children assure me that I am as young and fit as I ever was, but the oldest of them first met me when I was 43, and the other two when I was 49 and 50, so they may be mistaken.

    Re: Ukraine

I think the application to join NATO is just a statement that Ukraine has given up all hope of peace with Russia, now.

And a statement that Ukraine will defeat Russia.

    Its worth noting that...

    Re: One China?

    Dear Davies,

I do wish you would respond to what I write, and not to what you seem to wish I that I wrote.

    Please read my post #4.

That is correct. Humour doesn’t seem to be Davies’ strong suit.

That’s an awfully nice thing to say, Jack.
  13. Re: How much sextant ($$$) is needed to learn the basics?

Ah… There are in fact two related crimes that can be carried out against a sextant with polish and a rag. One relates to micrometer sextants and is polishing the thread on the arc that the worm gear...
  14. Re: Happy birthday to Andrew Craig-Bennett…

    Thank you, everyone.

I’ve had a nice day in the company of one son, with telephone calls from the other son and the favourite niece, who counts as a daughter.

    Re: One China?

Davies is so determined to pick a fight that he hasn’t spotted that I’m not saying that there isn’t one China.

I’m not saying anything about the Ming Dynasty.

  19. Re: How much sextant ($$$) is needed to learn the basics?

I’d advise against any sextant that has had the paint stripped; it’s been used as a decoration. The chances are very high that someone has committed the ultimate crime according to STS Lecky and...

There were two Chinese societies on Taiwan:

There were, first of all, the actual “Native Taiwanese”, who are genetically and linguistically close to the Filipinos. They make up about 1-2% of the...

    Re: Ukraine

Well, it seems to me that people who say that NATO “caused the war in Ukraine” are most unlikely to be persuaded by the rest of us, because confirmation bias works that way.

    For the rest of us,...

Thanks, Rumars. Most helpful. I’m kicking myself, because I have that book, which means I am subscribed to his online update service, and I missed this!
  23. Re: How much sextant ($$$) is needed to learn the basics?

The Vickers VC10, a rather unsuccessful rival to the Boeing 707 and the DC8, a plane that I flew in very often as a boy, came with its own sextant:

  24. Re: How much sextant ($$$) is needed to learn the basics?

    Something isn’t adding up.

An aircraft navigator needs an artificial horizon because very obviously he/she doesn’t have a regular one when airborne, so aircraft sextants have artificial horizons....

Right… it’s quite genuine and the date on the Certificate tells us that it was made during WW2.

  28. Re: How much sextant ($$$) is needed to learn the basics?

As far as I can see, the difference between the 15 and the 25 is that the 25 has a full horizon mirror. That’s a “nice to have” but certainly not an essential. I’ve used sextants that have it without...
  29. Re: How much sextant ($$$) is needed to learn the basics?

I agree with Andante Ed; the Astra IIIB is the best you can get, and the Plath Navistar Professional was a wrong turning by C. Plath as their world shrivelled away in the 1970s. There’s one on eBay...

  35. Re: How much sextant ($$$) is needed to learn the basics?

Much good advice here but I’ll add two penny worth:

    1. Start with a Davis Mark III; we all did. However the actual drawback isn’t the one you expect; it’s that if there is any wind at all it is...

If tax cuts damage essential infrastructure, like roads, or electricity, or ports, trade flows more slowly and at greater cost.

    Perfect timing.

I don’t suppose there will be a Border Poll for a while yet, but the eventual outcome can no longer be in doubt.

I wonder if I will live to see it.
