Well, my father died at age 57 of colon cancer, my brother of suicide at 49, so I am hoping I make it to somewhere around my mom's age (she will be 89 next week)....am 63
Been (mostly) vegetarian...
I reached out to the Canadian Canoe Museum as well - and sent them pics of this canoe - perhaps they may have some additional info that may be relevant to this # 4 model cedar rib canoe....we shall...
So, apparently, the Peterborough Canoe co also made a "#4" model canoe, after the Ontario Canoe co burned down in 1892 - same dimensions etc as the OCC #4 model
I guess there is no way for sure to...
Thanks Tim - great pics of those leeboards......I replied to your private message....appreciate it!
Thanks, Tim - that would be awesome! Let me know!
Esp. so since we are both in NE Ohio!
Cheers
Thanks for that! I had been looking on the woodencanoemuseum site, and saw there was a number to the right of the other set of numbers - but did not make the connection....
So, this canoe is...
Well, quick update - I made the 40 minute drive south last evening, and picked this up for $100....too nice to pass up!
It is pretty nice - no documentation at all - I noticed some numbers stamped...
Wow.... that is one beautiful boat!
Would love to see it in person someday and go for a sail! (or row!)
Thanks for sharing this!
Wow, nice! Wish I could find a "deal" on an Elf in my area - love that boat and hope to build one someday.....
So, what are your immediate plans? Cut out the bad ply, or ?
I will get in contact with the guy at Springfield Fan Centerboard co that you mentioned, this weekend - I would like to have as original replacement parts as possible, etc
I love fall- my favorite time of year, especially October when all the leaves change color! I do an Annual Fall Hiking spree here with our local metroparks - great to get out in the crisp autumn air...
Thanks again - Benson....from what the owner mentioned, dimension-wise it looks possibly to be a #24 Peterborough Cedar Rib model....would that be stamped on the stem up front? Owner looked and said...
Thanks for all the tips, guys.....am familiar with WCHA, was a past member, etc
Going to go look at and likely buy it this week.....seems like too good to pass up! (story of my boating life!)

Advertised on local craigslist as "home-built" but it does not look home made to me
Any ideas as to possible builder / origin? (thinking maybe Peterborough?)
Owner not sure if fg covered or...
What Rick said.....
Have found a number of nice "project boats" on my local craigslist - I even got 2 "free" sailboats from posting on CL that I was looking for a "sailboat project" a few years...
Soooo, I ended up taking my 1970 Mirror dinghy to the Boat Show last Saturday - beautiful day and I was the only sailboat there (most of the boats are Chris Crafts, Lymans etc)----lots of fun!

Happy B-Day - go surfing and fly some drones, dude....
This tri is more than 18 feet wide - that hydroplane is no where near that wide tilted on its flatbed trailer
Someone beat me to my nomination - but the Oughtred Elf (or larger Elfyn) stirs me....lovely boat

It may be wise to see what your local regs are about moving something this wide on local roadways / permits required and/if it is even allowed....something nearly 19 ft wide on a flatbed trailer...
You likely already have this info, but from the Jim Brown website

A "free" boat? Yes - run - very far!
As someone who has also been "gifted" several free boats over the years - I can relate.....there is a "free" scaled down Tancook Schooner in Cleveland...
$9 grand is "pocket change"??
Must be way bigger pockets than mine!
Beautiful boat though!!
Cute boats - I bought one here in OH for $100 a few years back - guy advertised it as a "Friendship Sloop", and did not know it was a Stevenson WK'er - painted it and messed with it a little - too...

This Morris was originally owned by Donna Cooper - whose father - Pop Cooper - owned the Anchor Canoe Livery here in Akron - on the Ohio + Erie Canal - my Dad used to rent this canoe from Donna back...
Sounds like it would be an interesting "exercise"
More time for outdoor activities - sailing and kayaking
Less time trying to find things to calm the "monkey mind" we all wrestle with....
Like the...
I am leaning this way - for ease more than anything - and have taken these 2 before to the Show
The Mirror dinghy would be fun to take as well - as there are always zero sailboats at this show,...
So, I typically take a boat or 2 to a local (Akron OH area) Antique + Classic Boat Show - typically held in June - last years was cancelled due to pandemic, and this year it will be Sept 11
I have...

Seems a bit $$ for a boat that needs some work (I got my latest Mirror for $25 with trailer, last year - so......yeah)

Cool article and great pics of Thistles racing in Lake Erie this week for the 75th Thistle Nationals

Not 100% sure, but I think we may be confusing a basic cotton lateen sail that Old Town sold as an accessory for many decades (and the associated leeboards and other hardware) with some more "formal...
Yep, looks like the same rig! Although yours seems to have 3 battens vs my 2.....and yours is not tattered / torn as mine was when it was given to me! Enjoy!
I believe it was some sort of muslin / cotton material she bought locally at a fabric store - I treated it to make it more water / wind proof - it sails ok for what it is.....not the best sail shape...
I bet your cotton lateen sail - if it is an Old Town sail rig - looks like this one I was gifted a few years ago, along with a ply canoe (with the standard mahogany OT leeboards, bronze fittings etc)...
Sorry to hear - with a nearly 89 year old Mom, I know it is also just a matter of time here as well....
Hang in there and care for yourself too!
We have Swenson's here in Ohio - been around longer (1934) and Skyway (1952)
Both are great and offer drive up and car-side food delivery.......Akron area traditions for sure...
If only I had a bigger garage! And more time.....

[QUOTE=62816inBerlin;6483002][QUOTE=WBViking;6482745]Have you considered a Mirror dinghy, or is that too small for you (11 ft)?
People have done a lot of cruising around in these boats - easily...
