    Simpson does make some pretty heavy stuff if you look though the catalog. I have welded some of their joist hangers to i-beams to preserve head room, maybe 10-12 gauge?

    I like the Import lathes, they have pretty good rigidity and having the ability to cut both metric and Imperial threads can sometimes be important.

    I'm not sure what "grade 5" steel is (sounds like rebar which is often not even steel, but soft iron) but either way look for a die that has "HSS" (high speed steel) marked on it and it will cut...
