    I think that I would increase the glue area by tonguing and grooving the edges. Or copy the Egyptian shipwrights by using a biscuit jointer, with real wood biscuits.

    Most wastage will occur at the faying surface between components. You would be wise to pull one and see what they are like. Then replace it with wrought iron rather than mild steel.
