Hi Richard,

A reminder for anyone interested, the Montague Harbour (at Galiano Island) rendezvous is next weekend, May 24 to 26. For details contact me and/or go to...
Here's how I did it on my 20 foot Chebacco, as described in the old Chebacco News (#34, I think). If you don't need opening ports this has worked well for 13 years with no leaks.

The Sailmaker's Apprentice suggests mild household soap and lukewarm water - no washing machine. For mildew - no mention of spider poo -he quotes Howard-Williams as suggesting domestic bleach such...
1. Pick one (sounds like you're almost there)
2. Build it
3. Go sailing
4. Repeat steps 1 to 3 until satisfied.
Good luck!

(satisfied Chebacco sailor)
I've used mine as vice, clamp, sawhorse, table and even as part of a boatbuilding jig. However I no longer use it for a step or a seat since it folded unexpectedly a couple of weeks ago (luckily I...
About 30 years ago a friend and I started paddling white water. We used 13' glass boats we made on the local club's moulds and these stood up pretty well. I learned to roll but was never more than...
I built a small plywood pram over 15 years ago, it's never been sealed with epoxy or anything and has only ever had oil-based paint. It's starting to show its age, but it'll be back in the water...
I made a cedar strip version of Rushton's 9' Sairy Gamp from the offsets in Atwood's (?) book for my 8 year old daughter. It paddled easily and was stable enough for both her and her 5 year old...
Tell us more about your book please - have I missed a thread?
Jamie
I lent out my copy of John Welsford's boatbuilding book and never got it back, but I'm pretty sure he recommended a similar but simpler join, using a sawtooth instead of the locking jigsaw shape. ...

Yes, he makes that point. I think the downside is that when gluing in tubes in traditional construction the wood will move and the joint may fail.
Jamie
Paul Gartside has a good discussion of advantages and disadvantages of fibreglass tubes in his FAQ at

The latest Watercraft Magazine shows a Chebacco on the cover, unusual in that its rigged with a lugsail. It's called Lizzy Bend aand is owned by Jan Doddema in Holland. I have a couple of pictures...
Check out Cold Cure, on their website System 3 say it will cure underwater. It's a good epoxy but I've only used it down to cool and/or damp (humid) conditions, not actually wet so no personal...
Or if not a Caledonia yawl, maybe a Welsford 6 metre whaler? In any case, if you were there, please reply. We have just started a sailing group and invite you to join us.
(I saw your boat...
I've built good oars out of lumberyard spruce, but if red cedar is what you have it'll work fine. I'm currently using (with a light dory) an old pair made of red cedar that are plenty strong. The...
Send me your email by PM and I'll send it to you tomorrow (I will have access to a scanner in the morning).

Thanks Dave, I already went ahead with a not-very-resistant varnish on this job, but will check out the sites given for the next one.

I've been using 5/16 spun polyester for 12 years for sheets, halyards and topping lift and have been totally satisfied. I like the feel, it's more than strong enough and goes nicely through the...
Thanks for the link Tobi. I remember seeing Dorothy as far back as 1967 when I was walking the docks at the Oak Bay Marina. My three favourites were Dorothy, the old fishing boat Thorhavn and...
How about Tad Roberts' Alder http://www.tadroberts.ca/services/small-boats/tender-launch/alder18 I looked at this one for a similar "boat-around-an-engine" project before I bought a tired dory...
I`m looking to buy a bench top press and I`m wondering what recommendations the Forum might have, along with the reasons for your recommendation. It won`t get heavy use but I do need accuracy, and...
Search this forum using "inside passage" for several threads. A google search will also turn up some accounts of the journey. Like several others, I plan to make the same trip sometime in the next...
I'm looking for a heat resistant varnish-type finish for wood. Has anyone used anything like this on their galley counters or elsewhere? It seems like a long shot but thought I'd ask. Thanks.

The group is now up and (I think) running. Any interested boaters can go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Sucia/ for information.

I have no experience, but here are a couple of resources. Howard Chappelle`s Boatbuilding gives instructions for both lofting and building a curved transom. Steward`s boatbuilding Manual also...
And hellacious fast too, as I recall....

I expect you would take the strain with the lever, flip up the pawl then let the boom unroll, controlling it with the lever. To get a new angle on the lever when it reaches an awkward position,...
Well, the plan is to be inclusive of all types - nobody in the Gulf Islands sails much in July and August anyway...
I seem to have more sailing friends in Washington and Oregon than here on Vancouver Island. I'd like to belong to an informal group of small boaters to go sailing with locally, or maybe for mutual...
This is my second try - apologies if the first half-finshed post also shows up...
Fitting the bilge panel in the Chebacco, in half inch ply, was difficult. After several were built, PCB suggested...
Name: Boater
Cure: Why would you want one?
I've used the formula: 1/2 the distance between the oarlocks x 25/7. If you are comfortable rowing cross-handed, add a few inches.
Trial and error works too.
Jamie
I sail a Chebacco, I don't usually beach her but I anchor a lot in the "Salish Sea" so FWIW here is my setup. I've used an 8 lb Danforth with about 17 feet of chain as my primary anchor for 12 years...
Warp + weft = sailcloth
No regrets.

You can avoid epoxy more easily if you avoid stitch and glue, building something with framing and chines instead. I built an 8' Elegant Punt with/for my 8 year old son, didn't want to use toxic...
Not a bad suggestion, thanks. However, I've had a PM from a UK forumite and they've found a good home.

My father left me a set of Clyde Cruising Club guides, covering the west coast of Scotland from the Firth of Clyde to the Shetlands. Living here on the BC coast, I won't be using these so would like...
Maybe not quite the shortest, but definitely the coolest, would be Alpha, the 12 foot clinker built dinghy with a steam engine. See http://www.northweststeamsociety.org for more.

I haven't used 5200 often, but I used screws too, also found that it was best to use 5200 in warm temperatures - when cold it was very hard to spread. For clean-up, mineral spirits will clean up...
My Elegant Punt has two parallel strips (1x2?) running along the bottom, maybe twenty inches apart, these have taken the brunt of 15 years worth of beaching and dragging, working well so far.
For...
Take a look at http://gartsideboats.squarespace.com/custom-boatbuilding/22ft-gaff-cutter-surprise-design-95.html (and scroll down) to see how Paul Gartside did it. I visited him in that shop and he...
Don't use tape - seriously. I didn't like the results I was getting with tape so switched to strips cut from regular cloth. By cutting on the bias (diagonally) you avoid most of the loose threads...
Thanks David, you made my morning!

I built a 16 x 34 Micmac from Hazen's book 25 years ago. My building partner and I had never built a canoe before but we set up the building form/moulds as instructed, then spent some time making...
Hello, we met and chatted near Eagle Harbour on Saturday. Sorry I/we couldn't follow through on your invitation to drop by Sunday, but wind and weather dictated otherwise.
