Interlux 2000 leaves a orange peel texture. Do you sand it down before you topcoat? I have found I end up sanding most of it off to get it smooth.

Great find. Keep us posted on your progress.
I have a stretched 19' to 20 1/2' I built a few years ago. You get a lot of attention at the boat ramp.
Not sure if it was posted here already. Great video of the history of Jacques Cousteau's Calypso.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKL1HTM0ij0&t=38s
Here is a video of their latest expedition. You can close caption from French to English. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GY5n0I5kqU
Looks like they did a first class job. With plywood you save quite a few oak trees|:)
At 28m would that be the largest plywood boat ever built?
Thanks for that, very interesting.
It would be great to see the launch in person. I should think it would be quite the launch party.
I think I remember reading that Tristan Jones had a rat gnaw a hole in his bladder water tank at sea.
I had a Norse pram for a dinghy which worked great except for the bumping against the hull part. I think that may be the reason some dinghies have a thick rope around the gunwales. Those padded...
I'll try this next time.
Thanks
Hey I knew that, I just wanted to know if you knew that :D.
I also considered that may have something to do with the problem but don't quite see how. It does make it hard to get at the prop.
I moved the hole outboard down not just the cavitation plate.
The eel grass wraps around the leading edge of the under water leg.
I’ll have to look into the weed cutter prop gard ideas.

Hi, I have a 20' Bartender boat with 50 hp Suzuki in a well. The problem I'm having is whenever I get some eelgrass around the bottom of the outboard it will start to cavitate and send the rpms way...
At the small licensing places I have never had a problem. I just told them the worth of the boat and they charged me tax on that, without recipes. It seems to help by saying it's a simple plywood...
Here is a nice video recap of the show. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajey8h4niFE
Thanks for the great pics. It was over to fast. Here is a pic of Leo's open house on Saturday. The line went on around the...
I am surprised they kept the hog in the drawings.
I thought the original boat was planked with teak and that was part of the reason Leo decided to use wana which was somewhat similar whithout the cost.
The sea’s out in the straights are probably the most dangerous part of the tip. It has certainly separated the boys from the men or girls from the women this time.
It would be fun to be apart of the adventure. I would think it would be a much more comfortable trip on the 44' pure & wild boat(first into Victoria) than a small open boat.
I believe the race starts tomorrow. First leg PT to Victoria.
The yellow cedar against the teak is going to be striking. It reminds me of the yellow ceader viking ship.https://www.woodenboat.com/sites/default/files/articles/polaris-lead.jpg
It's good to here you are still alive. We've definitely missed your energy and enthusiasm for boats since you have been gone. :arg
I hope they can do it. With the cost and starting a family. Great video.
The last couple boats I have skinned with polyester fabric have developed wrinkles. I have used it several years back and had no problem with wrinkles. It stayed drum tight. I think I would go with...
This guy literally wrote the book on this type of boat repair.http://danenbergboatworks.com/lapstrake.htm
Looks like you will have a very authentic faering with grown crooks. That is one nice thing about being in Oregon you have a lot of native oak trees. I usually laminate when I need curved wood. Good...
Also you can use white oak, again if weight is not an issue.
It has been said the cods head and mackerel tail water line would be faster going backwards with the point of maximum beam just aft of amidships. Of course it may have been a more seaworthy form. I...
We had a great time as kids rolling down the grass hills there.|;)
He Tom,
Do you have a link to that video? I also wonder what's next for the ship. I heard the captain remark he would like to sail it up the west coast to port Townsend and sail it in the race to...
From the pic your boat appears to be Joel Whites Shearwater. Very close to the Elf with a little less...
Building the hull is only half the job. It's amazing he got this far. It's great that he is taking us along for the ride.
Sad news. Another PT wooden boat fest bites the dust. https://woodenboat.org/
With clovis still out there maybe it won't be as crowded this year. Mask up yo. https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcS1zxbHQG6zhS-82EqnnSu_0BIjM7WbzDaHyQ&usqp=CAU
That sounds like a trip of a lifetime. There is a couple swedish sailors who recently did the trip from east to west.

Hey Tom,
I second the batten method. You will need to rip a lot off long narrow battens and tack them on the molds up to the sheer. It will also tell you how wide your planking stock should be. I...
I have had that problem also when I have varnished right after sanding the epoxy. I would wait a day or two after sanding to apply the varnish.
You might check out these guys videos https https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2aH41FZp1a0&t=400s
I think it would be a shame if he needs to move the boat away from that great shop not to mention all the cute animals.
I would go for the okume ply it's lighter and does not need to be fiberglassed over. It would not hurt to fiberglass the bottom for abrasion protection though. The fir ply should be glassed to keep...
Good idea to keep those leaves out of her bilge. Rot never sleeps ;)
I remember them giving an engaging talk at the PT boat fest 2003? and going aboard their beautiful boat Taliesin. If I remember correctly it had a bathtub where the motor should have been.
RIP...
We went to Sucia and Matia from sandy point on Saturday. I never saw so many boats anchored out in Echo bay. Including 2 giant yachts one with it's own helicopter. We didn't stick around long. Had a...
I also have a Bartender. A stretched 19'. One advantage with the outboard version you can raise the motor up for beaching. Climbing off and on is not to bad. Like you say, you may need to use the...
If the deck starts to leak, can't you just canvas over it and paint it with lagging adhesive like the old fishing boats were.
I wonder if you could scale this type of construction up to build a good size catamaran. Looks like you can get a pretty good hull shape with a minimum of work other methods require and possibly get...
I would steam all the planks before you put them on the boat, it helps season the planks and reduces the stress on the fastenings and plank. I don't think you could steam the full length plank in...
I would make sure not to use polyurethane paint under the water line. It absorbs water. The old school oil base stuff is a better choice.
They use red cedar for planking in the NW and it is one of the softest and weakest of the cedars. Vertical tight grain I believe is what makes a big difference in strength and hardness of the...
