    1/4" is a pretty small gap, and it looks like there is plenty of ventilation. I don't think you'll have a problem.

    How about using Dow Blue Insulating foam (EPS)? You can glue together layers with a construction adhesive for foam (and could incorporate channels for your straps). It cuts and sands easily.
