Thanks for the feedback guys. My question was the short story!
The longer story is explained in the gist of an e-mail I sent to Dennis Hansen, who took over after Mr. Payson died.
I have...
Are there any guidelines for how wide they should be? I am currently in the modeling stage for my next build, which I think may be a Diablo Grande (18' x 6'3") . The plans call for a 2" x 1.5"...
Would the same concerns apply if the piece is pre-fitted, glassed then bent while the epoxy is still "green"?
Thanks for the help guys, great tips so far.
Are there any guidelines for designing Bimini Covers (e.g. size), and are there any pros/cons to the number of bows?
I am in the model building stage for an open runabout (Diablo Grande) 18' with...
Hey Marcus,
I don't think I would raise the seats either. They are already pretty sensitive to weight where they are in the plans. I find I often have to sit leaning in, toward the centerline,...
I used 4" Dow Blue Foam (XPS). Easily cut with a hand saw:

Great link - Thanks!
Thinking out loud here... Anyone have any thoughts about stretching the station frames of Diablo by 10%?
I thought something a little bigger than Diablo but not as big as Grande might be...
Hey Marcus - Same boat, same problem. This helped:
Only downside is you have to wait around for the epoxy to be green (sticky) enough to hold the cloth. Biaxial may be better, but you don't...
Watched this last night. Some of you may be interested.

How much lateral stability is there (initial and secondary)?

Happy Birthday!
1/4" is a pretty small gap, and it looks like there is plenty of ventilation. I don't think you'll have a problem.
If you insist on a solution, I would use a couple of small dogs.
If this is your first boat, and you don't have any training in design, I would stick with the plans. That's what I did on my Gypsy. (You can find pictures on this site.) I have never even given...
I thought his most recent book was published in 2007...
Anyway, maybe I just got lucky, but I picked through the stack and took the best sheets I could find. I was planning on filling voids with...
Well, you should use the best quality material you can reasonably afford. That being said, in this case, I wouldn't have any qualms about using ACX for your first build. That's what I did.

Is your design sheathed in fiberglass and sealed in epoxy?
That's a tough find. I looked for awhile and gave up. There are some threads over at instantboats.com, but the picture links are dead. There used to be a guy named William Feather, but I didn't...
Anyone have any experience or suggestions regarding these? I am currently comparing two manufacturers: Illusions and Interstate.
Thanks,

I am refinishing the gunwhales on my Bolger Gypsy. When I built her, I used water based stain on the gunwhales, sealed with epoxy, then put on 2 coats of varnish. The boat is stored uncovered,...

You can find the plans over at instantboats.com. They're $40. They're also available in the book, but not to scale. There is a forum on the website too....

Great thread...Thanks!
Yeah - there are some differences, but I still think it's a Gypsy with some builder/owner mods. Check out Chip Skiffs thread. He's got a lug and made some modifications to his.
Hey Andrew,
I had the same kind of varnish dilemma as you on my first build. I'd go with what Gerard said or what I did, which was:
I used coats as follows 75% thinner, 25% thinner, 15%...
Beautiful job...really looks great.
Congrats!
How about using Dow Blue Insulating foam (EPS)? You can glue together layers with a construction adhesive for foam (and could incorporate channels for your straps). It cuts and sands easily.

Hey Chip,
Do you have a control to compare to? Just wondering how much of the heat gain is from the collector vs. sun on that side of the house...
I did.
Your constraints are:
1. No compressed air
2. Concerns about barotrauma
Your apparent goal is maybe another 45 seconds of working time - I just thought training to hold your breath...
What about training to hold your breath longer?
Probably not...

Grimaldi's is good, and I've eaten their pizza a lot, but I've never been floored by it. The original owner (Patsy) was supposed to be taking it over again, but I haven't been there since that was...
What Peter said. I got the Bohndell sail for my Gypsy and have been very happy with it. I don't have anything to compare to, but it looks like pretty good quality work to me.
