I'm trying to feel special pretending you're referring to me and Gnosis here.
No doubt.
From my experience with Gnosis (a Caledonia) there is quite the plethera of sticks in the boat with first launching... foremast, mizzen mast, boom, lug, mizzen sprit, boomkin, tiller...
That looks like a pretty slick setup, with utility befitting you Bruce.
One comment/question, when looking at that I couldn't help but think about how bad that setup would be against any sort of...
Seconded, I just got a metal-bodied gusher pump and am figgerrin' this same problem out...
Not while there's still breath in my lungs!

I actually did not do any casting. I instead borrowed James' ample vices (no, not black tar heroin) and bent up a mast traveler for my Caledonia Yawl, Gnosis.
Progress pictures:...
Also, there were a number of people from far out of town trying to get some specific hardware case... sense the finish of the parts right out of the mold is pretty rough, they require much cleanup on...
More pictures! I'll try to cover other areas that Ben didn't already get.
The whole set is here.
The shop... you can see the casting setup on the left.

That was a great time indeed.
Many thanks to Grand Wizard McMullen for opening his shop to all of us. I took many pictures, hopefully they'll get online soon and posted here.
Yup. I'm gettin the itch too.
^ Yes. I believe in "Details of Classic Boat Construction" Larry Pardey goes into especially fine detail on making traditional fashion timbers. Specifically because it's both so difficult and so...
That famous McMullen charisma strikes again!
Isn't the "lead" used in red primers lead tetroxide (Pb(IV)O4)? Lead chromate is a yellow pigment...
If you're really lusting after some real red lead (though the real effects are dubious vs just...
It also should be noted, that Mr. Butler kept her engineless throughout his ownership voyaging on her. Brass ones indeed.
I don't know if she still retains her purity with her new owners in PT.
Don't forget your trusty daisho! And buddies...

Curses!
Those Japanese always keep all the cool stuff for themselves!
Good to know, thanks for the spot check.
I don't know those dimensions offhand, but I've got a tape measure I can throw on it... I'll try to get those for you on my next outing.
Eric D Beard likes this.
Awesome topic.
Can you add more specific info on that SS burr grinder? I would be very interested in adding this to my kit...
It makes it hard to sneak up on the whales I'm hunting...
Plus SailNOar membership comes with a complementary beard. So, there's that too...
No, that's just a necklace. All the cool kids are doing it.
I do need one of them tallow flasks though... there are some facets of the bronze/wood creaking that should be quashed.

Rafted up to the Schooner Lavengro in at CWB.

Small update... took Gnosis for a row around Lake Union. There were breaths of wind here and there, but I wanted to get some rowing practice in, and in fact wanted to see how much the wind affects...
Indeed. Surely extensive real-world testing against a Sooty Tern, Peapod, and Caledonia are in order.
Science!
I know this very very well now. It can help greatly (getting out of irons) or be a major PITA (keeping you beam to the wind when raising sail).
I was just about to say this... An inch off...

Thus far things have going really well. There is a little bit of pooling on one side (I pinched the cover a little bit with a dart at the end on the centerline. It sheer line pulled inboard and...
ACK! Just found it in the ruffage, email sent!
A little more fitting and fine-tuning the ends this weekend. Got to preview the ~90% finished cover on the boat as well. Looking good... mind you this is without the perimeter tie-down on. She...
Most excellent! Congrats!
Your Bronco is *almost* as classy as the boat. Almost...
A little more progress last night on the cover...
Got the "lower skirt" sewn to the top of the cover, complete with the webbing at the bottom for a rugged tie-around bit at the bottom. These were...
The next phase in my cover project was to drag the whole works back out over the boat and pattern out the stern. I had a few variables undecided here and simple left that last panel unfinished while...
The weather here has only reinforced the fact that you three, indeed, stole the last sunny weekend in Seattle. Ever.
I'm not sure if there is any confusion about this here, but to be clear:
The reef lines out to the clew -only- hold that cringle down to the boom. No outhaul-ing force applied here. In the...
So, said giant snap shackle is affixed directly to the forward end of el boom?
It makes it really simple to have 3 sets of reef points (for maximum variation of sail size to the conditions) while not having bazillions of lines running hither-and-yon about the foresail and boom....
Really, the loop around the boom is free to slide wherever it pleases... it should be allowed to basically line up with the reef tack cringle when the reef line is brought taught. BUT because the...
Excellent! Looking forward to seeing this progress!
G'Luck
Do the reef lines creating the new tack and clew provide enough/any outhaul action, tensioning the (new) foot of the sail? Or do they just lash the reef points down?
Here's the cover taking shape after marking the sheer line on the individual panels comprising the main top of the cover:

Boat cover updates.... Been grinding away at this bad boy, learning as I go. I already documented the initial layout of the cover, and tracing the sheer. To take a wee step back, here's the...
It appears that as long as the other boat is not literally on fire, you'd choose it over a SCAMP.
While I was thinking about it, I came up with anther little sail-n-oar boat detail I've been meaning to work out better in my head. Seemed like a good excuse for another sketch...
James and I...
My drawings are usually a product of me thinking over and refining some sort of detail on the boat. Right now I am eyebrows deep in sewing up my boat cover, so that's taking up most of my...
Do a little leg work searching for Sunbrealla on places like ebay. I found mine for a steal: 10 yards of 80" (80"! Not the typical 60" bolts) for $200 shipped. That is ample cloth to make a cover...
Purdy. Thanks for the ideas!
Thanks ya'll. I am not a pro illustrator, I just love art and design... sketching rigging and construction details is just the scratch for that itch, it seems.
Anyone want illustration work done?...
Got your message, thanks James. That all sounds good... lemme collect myself from my morning meetings (I masquerade as a software jockey to support my sailing and other various habits) and we can...
