Happy new year all yooz!
You can go a looooong way in a Mirror, if the voyage of the Jack de Crow is anything to go by.
Done! Well done. :) Is she a spare bedroom now?
Beach catamaran trailers have the mast arranged exactly as you describe. Maybe you can borrow a catamaran trailer.
Hi Rick! Good to see you. :)
(There are other threads??)
Have you considered adding a small mizzen? :-)
Could you hinge the steps but rather than a 1" block underneath have a hinged triangular ply brace which flips out (vertical hinge) under the step? You'd want it to be somehow captive in that...
I've been not looking at the forum much and didn't even know you were back into Larrikin work, Greg! I haven't checked since some time in mid 2019.
I've really enjoyed the catch up read. Thank...
I'm still checking in, but nothing to contribute. Sorry. Boats and the sea have depressingly little involvement in my life at the moment.
It's good to see your projects. :-)
Bruce, if those bevel cuts are something you want to do repeatedly, could you arrange two pieces of aluminium channel into a frame that captures the edges of the handheld circ. saw base? My dad had a...
I'm still working full time, which is dumb. Haven't been for a sail in months and months. :(
She looks fantastic, Tom. It's so good to see this new rig on her! :-)
What's the opposite approach? Propeller in the air and engine submerged??
Ah. I see now. That'll work.
On Pixie I have a large loop/eye at the top of the chainplate, so the deadeye at the bottom of the shroud is lashed straight to the chainplate instead of another...
It won't be doing 20,000rpm with a submerged propeller on the end. :-)
Why the loop?
FINALLY went out for a sail on Pixie this arvo. I haven't been since starting a real job more than three months ago. I'm appalled at my behavior!
It was a brief one, but I was delighted to get out...
Surreal indeed.
Art is at its best when something else from somewhere unknown comes along for the ride.
...and excellent progress on the deck fittings! Keep at it. :)
...and make a little table for it. My trimmer router mostly lives attached to a piece of form ply about 2' sq. Basically I took the little bottom plate off the router's collar and put some form ply...
When does the sale settle?
Jeebers! I thought Mooloolaba was expensive! I pay a bit over $500/mo if I pay quarterly.
Thank you for the photos, Phil.
Beautiful.
Excellent news (about the mainsail).
What sort of breezes did you have for racing on the weekend?
That's a lovely spot. I could handle cruising around that area.
I stupidly started a full time job again a few weeks ago. No time for anything important. Couldn't even take Pixie to the Classics...
Cool! :-)
Certainly count me in on this. :)
Wow! That looks fantastic.
Your place looks lovely, Phil!
Peter K. probably knows what Gary's up to.
Gary didn't make mine, no. I don't know who made it... in the late 80's. :)
Tom, have you spoken with Gary Saxby in Brisbane?
Excellent! :-D
Pixie's peak halyard is almost the same as Wee Barkie's original one.
Where the halyard ends at the gaff on WB, on Pixie it turns and goes to a becket on the same block it just came from on...
Do without winches if you can. You want a classic rig, don't you? :)
At 3:1 you'll be able to swig up the main luff pretty tight. For headsails use a double ended halyard with one end on a 5:1....
Pixie's only little, and the pair of 4:1 halyards does leave a big pile of line to coil down after a hoist. I can't imagine what a 5:1 hoist on a big gaffer is like!
4:1 (Pixie) is easy.
I think 3:1 would be fine too, the more I think about it. I'd say try it and see. A winch might be nice for getting the luff nice and tight, but there are other ways.
I'll...
No. Looks like all singles up there, with the halyard terminating at the gaff giving you 3:1, which is what you said you have for the throat halyard. It'll be a bit heavy. You'll have mast winches...
I think a foam cored panel for a dodger is an excellent idea. Reducing weight up high is always worthwhile.
Fabulous result! Thank you for the report.
Tom, if you can, get Tom Cunliffe's Hand, Reef and Steer and read the whole thing a couple of times. It's *much* better than the John Leather book in explaining all the rigging, how to set it up and...
The original spar was taller perhaps because it was a 'pole' mast, as they say, to provide for a decent topsail without having to use a topmast.
You almost have a sliding gunter rig there, if you...
I'm pleased you see you making drawings of the sailplan. :) They'll make the job easier in the long run.
Do you have hull lines, so you can mark the hull's CLR in your sailplan?
Thank you for the warning.
You prompted me to have a look on Google Maps, and there is also an entrance at the other end. I think I'll be coming from that direction anyway.
I was supposed to be starting a new job today, but the newboss called in sick. I went for a sail instead. So my day turned out *far* better than I expected. It's nice when that happens.
I'll be there tomorrow. Is there a gathering place other than the Chapel if I get there an hour or more early?
It's a boat! Should still work alright when it's wet!
About the same time, and on Sunday and Monday, I was snorkeling outside the pools and rock shelf at Austinmer (a couple of km south).
I followed a *big* stingray out over the seagrass beds for a...
Just caught up with the thread.
:( Farewell and fair winds on your next adventure, Mr. Sibley. You are one of the good ones.
