Thanks for the McMaster-carr referral. It looks like they have some products I can try.

  2. Re: Is the mast on a sprit rig supposed to rotate?

I get what you are saying, but with the downhaul the luff is tight and not blowing out to windward.

I think I'll just work on the mast, mast partner, and mast step to see if I can't get the mast...
  3. Re: Is the mast on a sprit rig supposed to rotate?

Might you mean the "luff of the sail" lining up with the aft side of the mast? If so, then yes, the luff of the sail rides on the aft side of the mast.

The luff of my sail attaches to the mast at...
  4. Is the mast on a sprit rig supposed to rotate?

I have a Penrose 15 sailboat with a sprit sail rig (see here: http://forum.woodenboat.com/showthread.php?279638-Penrose-16-sailing-rowing-skiff-has-anyone-heard-of-this-design)

Do you have any pics of your Mayfly 14?

Do you have any pics/diagrams of the gunwale to gunwale sheet rigging?
  8. Re: Penrose 16 sailing/rowing skiff... has anyone heard of this design?

Tom... thanks for the comments. Indeed I have changed the sheeting on the boat to resemble the sheeting on a Melonseed (although the Melonseed has a boom which I do not). The sheet attaches to clew...
  9. Re: Penrose 16 sailing/rowing skiff... has anyone heard of this design?

Thank you both for the comments. I've had her out twice now on a small lake. I really like the simplicity of the sprit rig and she sails nicely.

I can sit on the rear cockpit seats or sit on the...
  10. Penrose 16 sailing/rowing skiff... has anyone heard of this design?

I am posting this thread again... don't know why it was "closed."

I purchased a very nice wooden sailboat called a Penrose 16. Please see the photos.

Very nicely done boat. Has a sprit sail....
  11. Penrose 16 sailing/rowing skiff... has anyone heard of this design?

I recently purchased the pictured boat in Portland, Oregon.
The listing described it as a Penrose 16. I have not been able to find any info on this design.
The listing said that the boat was built...

Regarding the shrink wrap suggestion, Are you talking about that shrink wrap that you put on whatever and then heat it with a blow dryer?
  13. Re: Floatation foam blocks... anyway to coat them with...

Thanks for the comments so far. The boat is a fiberglass Laguna Windrose 24. These boats came with built-in positive floatation in the form of these foam blocks.

The foam is of the "styrofoam...

  17. Re: Leg o mutton sail rig: How to determine how high the boom should be mounted?

Thanks, Todd, for that explanation. So positioning the boom a bit higher than the clew is the place it needs to ride. And I see why now... and how... it is that these sprit booms produce the...
  18. Leg o mutton sail rig: How to determine how high the boom should be mounted?

In rigging Leg O Mutton sail, one end of the boom is attached at the clew, and the other end extends forward extending past the mast.

    Two questions:

    1. How high up the mast above the tack...

Looks similar, huh? What would it take to restore that boat? Seems one would have to take off all the planks, deconstruct it and then reconstruct it.
