Norm, your a hoot!Reminds me when as a youngster I built many stick airplanes. As soon as I got all the parts together and before papering,I would be found running around the house making "flying...
G'day Peter. Thanks for the information. That is exactly what I was curious about.
Again, glad to see you back and with all parts working.

Slightly askew the topic,It is my experience that the squaredrive will outperform the rest when used for dry fitting.Where phillips and frearson may last a set or two, they soon become useless in dry...

Commmonnnn ED,where is pheonix?
A heat gun will be faster. But,if you don't have one a dryer is fine.
That is a beauty.I could become a sailor yey with something as salty as that.
Some how it looks like something Bruce Taylor would be willing to develop a new plan for"persuading" his Maggie. ;)
Apple wood makes the best smoke for pork ribs.Doc,where are you when we need you?
What Norm said!
A hearty agreement with Margo, that is an awsome site, and the writing is great.
Tried to sign on for updates but got lost in the AOL shuffel.

Gotta go with jeff.If the mahog. is true chestnut red hond.mahog.I would use that.It is by far the most beautiful(and traditional)wood. It shows off gold leaf like no other.
Good going Kevin. She is a pretty lass and says alot for your skill and perserverance.

Nothing to it.This a fresh spill.Just sop it up and scrub with a little TSP.Let it dry and your ready to do whatever you want.Won't need treatment of any kind really.

Good going Wayne.
Those 60 deg.days with sun shinning are sure great for getting outside again. We are having 55 to 60 deg.with a tad of north wind.Lots of sunshine is just the incentive to through...
Ed,Gatsby is fastened with Sil.Brnz.,so I have always used a forstener bit of the next largest bung size,No problem,as it gets right down to the screw where the next step is the usual rap on a...
I like nails for this application.Don't like "spreading" the endgrain of ply, which screws will do even if drilled properly.Ringnails have a good bite.Gooped with a little something from a tube they...
As usual, the tutorial is splendid. As good as any how to article...ought to be in an issue of WB.

I tried to compensate for some shrinkage by storing the teak for a year in our(SWMBO thinks I'm nuts and I agree)spare room.I installed the deck in august beliving the wood will be at it's narrowist...

Rick,I think that teak is one of the least likely woods to raise nasty splinters.
I planked our upper deck 8 yrs. ago with teak. Not one raised grain splinter from planks that are not vert.grain.

Diver,can you post a drawing?
I can imagine a chain and sprocket at the rear wheel, with the small sprocket on the pipe that is driving the rudder.
Gatsby has a rack and pinion system driven by a 25'u jointed steel rod that gets its input from a chain and sprocket(two stations.

Good going Norm.Posting that broken stick reminds us all this is not about perfection.
Some of the beautiful pieces of wood that ended up as kindling in our fireplace is testimony to that.

gert, add penetrol for adheshion not for thinning.Thinning should be done with the mfgr.rec liquid.
I hope I did not mislead you.Penetrol adds hyde and flow.Thinning adjusts the leveling and...
Jeff,I have never measured penetrol.Since I taught myself to paint boats I have relied on the "feel" of the material as it drips from the stirring stick and drags along the surface I am painting.

I just can't help myself.I get the vapors when I see a hunk of timber like that.I can smell that "fresh cut aroma"from that teeny tiney pile of sawdust way out here in foggy cal.

Brushing would be fine, and with your developing skills,I'll bet it will come out great.
Spray on several coats if you go that way,and you will achieve the thickness desired.
Ron,FYI.Our Gatsby has a cockpit deck that is built similar to what you describe.
The 4'x4'hatch is piano hinged.When opened,there are large gutters(1" deep/3/4" wide)with 3/4"copper drain tubes...
Greg, that is a riot.I did head for the hemlock but the dad gumed icon did nothing for me.Reminds me of a time when my youngest daughter was 14 yrs.and I would have given my boat for some hemlock....
