I'm going to have to watch my dollars on this one Jim, not too many exotics .
That sounds like a perfect couple of days on a small boat John, I hope to emulate you soon !
2mm only imported from China.
2mm only Ian, I need more thickness.
The cheque's in the mail .:d
but yep, they're gold !Y>
I've just rung the local big joinery / window manufacturer. They have a 36" band resaw and are happy to put green timber through. Sawing to 100mm x 4mm from 100 x 50 green stock would take about 4...
Beautiful work Ole and a bloody nice bit of timber !
I'll settle for a quarter !:D
400 km per hour winds reported here! Quite mind boggling !
My best wishes to all.
Thanks Fredrik, not quite what I'm looking for but very interesting none the less !
Gentlemen , thanks for the input but as Rick says I was looking for "small boat dogged down hatches, the kind of thing you would fit to an open 15 to 20 footer ."
A job that coming up for me quite soon is constructing or buying hatches for my JIM build. It seems very likely that builders on this forum have already solved my problem and produced beautiful and...
A trip to Peru !!! I'm really jealous now Andrew .
Yes, certainly watertight but quite small and perhaps difficult to pass much gear through.
Something like these Rick ? http://www.sedakayak.com/parts/hatches.htm
Do you have recommendations ?
That would be a pleasant surprise !
Our little Staffy Suzie died here on the lounge floor, the same problem but no carpets and decent mop helped a lot .
My sympathy Bruce, it's no fun at all.
Done, thanks Don.
I'll have more questions, many many more !:d
I'd appreciate that Don, I have a lot to learn about glass and frankly trying work out the requirement for this project is not quite straight forward.
I'll talk to Ed but would like to get my...
Yes Don, I'm very much aware of the clock!
I've had the Speed Strip profile recommended to me as very good for short handed use, no fastenings need except the occasional one into the moulds to...
Beyond my aspirations Mike, a quite beautiful job !!|:)
Not sealed but with the best watertight hatches I can design and construct. I'd like to be able to leave the compartments open to air circulation when she's not in the water .
Don, do you have any information on the amount / weight of fiberglass cloth that would equal two double diagonal layers of veneer?
My specific situation is that I intend to dry store this boat for...
You're right, he has been extremely helpful !
I'm giving serious consideration to Don's suggestion now Emma but I had been thinking of and experimenting with "veneers" 4mm thick, I had imagined using plastic staples and epoxy to fasten them...
In fact said planks are shaped and scarfed but still sitting lonely and unloved on the bench, a photo of that will not be produced !
Today was spent excavating for a slab to be laid ASAP, the new...
As I said on your thread Andrew I much prefer to cut half the depth in the inner and the out planks otherwise the forward 6" has very little support and the planks are just edge glued.
BTW, this...
I'm thinking of using 2 layers of flooded gum with glass outside, flooded gum doesn't bend that well ... I've been playing with samples here over the last week . Essentially your construction but the...
Thanks Don, I've been reading your build thread and had been tempted to PM you a few questions so thanks for chiming in .Y>
One of the reasons for considering the veneers is to get the thickness...
All just harmless fun that just went a little bit wrong officer :d.
Sheathed inside up to the waterline ? That's interesting, I haven't heard of it done way before but it very obviously works. The MacNaughton Rules call for sheathing inside and out but I think I'll...
The lads in this story weren't kids, maybe 5 years out of kidhood ....early 20s ?
A variation of the above DID happen here, 2 miles down the road from here . Two pill heads tried to siphon fuel...
I got grumpy managerial type , you did better !
Good advice Gib ... if I saw it out I would need to set up a ripping bench probably powered by a petrol or diesel engine. I don't have enough amps available at my shed for a job the size of ripping...
Thanks John, you must have found the right bloke !
The chap I talked to was "unhelpful" ;)
3mm would be ideal , 2mm a bit light ... I'll mull it over . Thanks again,
Peter.
Rick, you've probably posted an answer to this but is Masina just strips plus fg sheathing or are there diagonal layers in there too?
Do you have any idea of her total hull thickness ?
Peter
Thanks John but the last time I spoke to them on the subject they wouldn't extract veneer from their production run . I think sawing may be the only way .:(
What a bastard Greg ! I agree you'll get there little out of the airport mob, it's the reason I hate leaving my ute in storage.
Thanks David, thanks Gib. Based on those costs I guess I'll be sawing my own if I can't find a way around it. The main problem is the time lag in having to dry the timber although I could saw it...
gender is not as good as sex, but it's more specific .|:)
I'm going through the process of evaluating various construction methods for the build of a 28 foot yacht My first preference is strip plank with 2 or possibly 3 layers of veneer followed by fg...
More experience ? you certainly aren't talking to me but yes, I'm cutting gains on both planks , it seems the best way as it retains reasonable strength in both planks .
She's a lovely shape Andrew ! She's going to be a delight !
Thank you Gary, that is appreciated .Y>
Perfect up here too Rob, I'll just scarfed up and glued another JIM plank, now I'll go for a little ride on the BMW.BY:D
The heater Lin and Larry used was a Valor, they are easily available on Ebay here. The working parts are brass and don't seem to deteriorate and the wicks are available too....
They must plan on staying a long time Jeff .
Thanks Vern, an 1/8th each side , that will do nicely .Y>
I'm going to lift an excellent post by Keyhavenpotter on this thread, post number 744. An very well thought out comparison of several Oughtred boats and...
Not an update unfortunately, home maintenance and new bit to build have taken over temporarily. I have cut out the final planks and am awaiting a bit of spare time to fit them.
I thought I'd post...
