I just scrolled back through this thread after posting the above. I have Millie Hill version I plans, am building Harry Bryan's Shantyboat version I, have plans for version II (the one he build and...
Millie Hill is actually built glued and screwed plywood on frame.
Take your time and plan carefully. I've installed two of these-both slightly, but noticeably, crooked. I've tried once to correct one of them, but it founds its way back to crooked.
Nice job and neat boat. Where will you use her?
Well I received R. Parker's study plans for Minocqua II today. It's an intriguing and beautiful design. Maybe I'll build one someday. I think I like the 38' more than the 41' as the cabin on the 41...
Since studying Thomas Clapham's Minocqua design, I've become intrigued with the yawl rig. I own a cat ketch and the only other boat I've sailed is a Sunfish. In all I read, I keep coming across...
I want a Minocqua II myself. Looks like Chapelle changed the rig and the lines slightly for his 38. The Minocqua built by the guy out in CA got Clapham's stern all wrong I think.

This shows Egret in profile.

Scroll down to number 7 - King Fish from astern - I didn't know she had a round stern.

Looks like there are several photos of Egret and other Monroe sharpies I have not seen...
I'm actually considering wiley ports for the windows now. I may still go with the shutters, we'll see. The wiley ports will be cheaper and easier to use with screens.
I just added some recent photos here: http://brs-pelican.blogspot.com/ Also, check this site out for some more of the one Harry Bryan built: http://www.wyattlawrence.com/ That guy apparently works...
You can rest assured I will. This has been about a 3 year project already. I've got a ways to go, but am hoping to be close or finished by the fall.
Thanks Gary - precisely what I had in mind.
Thanks. I found it. Issue 215. I'm considering these for my houseboat. They would be quite large on the forward windows - nearly 2'x4'.
There was an article on a design for cabin windows in the past year in Wooden Boat. It was of the square type that use two wedges on either side. I think the Redwing uses them. Anyway, I'm looking...
The photos of boom vangs I've seen show a block and tackle set up to pull down on the boom a little behind where it meets the mast. It seems to me that when this is pulled down tight, the boom would...
I love this stuff. Learning to sail opens up an entire world of learning and challenge. So, it sounds like some conventially boomed sails don't use a boom vang, but necessarily suffer from the...
Atkin's James Samuel is the boat I was looking at. I have a 17 cat ketch with sprits. All of your points make sense with this 20 foot cat boat with the ability to reef.
...
Speaking strictly about a triangular sail, why choose one over the other?
Do you have a design picked?
I love it. I first saw it on his site and was very excited to see the write up. Others seem to really love the rig and I really like the size and set up of the cockpit and cabin. It seems the...
Here's one built by Clapham for sale on page 203 for only $1,100.
There was an old thread on this boat which is now closed. I came across this photo yesterday which I have not seen before. http://www.floridamemory.com/fpc/KOR/KOR0801.jpg
The site calls the...
It appears the battens all stand proud of the frames, except at the transom where their let in. Is that right, or am I just not seeing it?
Justin, where are you located? I'm building a shanty boat to the plans H. Bryan originally drew for this design. I also have the plans for the boat he ultimately built, which is the one you refer...
The more I learn the less I think I want to own a sailing canoe. Maybe I need to sail one first. Thanks for the replies.
Can anyone comment on the performance of these canoes sailing? I've never sailed a canoe before. Also the simplicity of the single sail rig appeals to me over the yawl rig, but I'm sure that...
Thanks. Mines probably still on its way.
Anyone else still waiting on this?
Thanks a lot. I wondering if some sort of insect or animal might of chewed it.
I've had my sails rolled up on my masts since last summer. I unrolled them to wash them today in preparation for sailing later this week. I noticed one has 2 or 3 small holes - about the size of a...
Thank you.
What does glass cloth, Dynel, canvas, etc., do for plywood decks that paint and/or epoxy cannot? Does it simply add durability? Surely there's more to it. I can understand why a sheathing on decks...
Thanks Chuck. I'll follow up with you if I decide to go that route. I want to learn more about canvas as a deck covering. I mentioned Gannon and Benjamin above. I just saw that on their new...
Harry Bryan mentions laying canvas in outdoor roofing cement and then saturating it with epoxy. I'm curious what the theory is here. Anyone know?
A couple of things. The topsides are also plywood. The plans show cut outs in the topsides at deck level to allow water to drain off. However, there is no camber to the decks, just the cabintop...
I'm interested in trying the method mentioned above. I've glassed a small hull before. Never used Dynel. I think canvas is much cheaper.
I'm thinking of using canvas and wood glue on my decks and maybe my cabin tops also. I just reread the recent Wooden Boat article about using Titebond II and canvas on plywood decks. My foredeck...
Doug Hylan just posted pictures of his 18' prototype: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.319968728056323.86025.161245603928637&type=3
I'm curious about how these boats perform. How do they...
Can anyone tell me about these boats sailing, rowing, and towing abilities? I think I might be able to buy one for a good price. The problem is, it was stored in the owner's garage for years, and...
Well the plans arrived yesterday and they very well done, consistent with what others here say about Hylan's plans. I have a question about glued lap construction. Do the planks maintain the same...
Well I've ordered the Oonagh plans and I'm going to put my Bay River Skiff up for sale. Hopefully I can collect enough to build Oonagh and buy a trailer for my shanty boat.
How well do you think Hylan's new design will sail? I've liked Atkin's Little Peter design and wanted to build one for years now, but I've felt it would not be stable enough for 2 to stand and move...
I would expect her to be very stable. She has 5' of beam. I think I like the design too.
But if you were using say a piece of cedar, how wide would it need to be to cut the plank from? It looked like to me it might take a 14" wide board.
Cool! How wide does the lower topside strake need to be? I think I lofted the boat 1/4 scale and felt it would be hard to find a board wide enough to fit.
Thanks, but I'm a bit confused. You first say "no." Is that no, I cannot simply put my laminates between these pieces and clamp them down, or no, Harry's warning does not apply to me?
I marked out the camber for the forward cabin beams on a scrap of ply and cut the line. I now have this:...
I think I paid 85 dollars a sheet for 3/4 I think. I think you can get Hydrotek for the same price and I think it would be better.
DC Brown - thanks. Harry actually changed the design a bit. ...
