There were two endings that contradicted each other. Another reason it looked awfully familiar.

War with Canada? Art vs. reality

Last week's news sounded kind of familiar, which prompted me to dig up a copy of Canadian Bacon, a 1998 movie about a U.S. president faced with a sagging economy and polls due to the end of the cold...
  6. Re: You Were Right, Study Shows You Probably Didn't Need That High School Calculus Al

Calculus was a primary cutoff for admission to study in most science and engineering curriculums. The idea was if you could handle it, you could handle the rest. FWIW, I flunked it the first...

    Re: SMALL pad sander

I've never liked sanding with a Fein--the pads wear out quickly, and the surface area is so small they don't do much for sanding. The saw attachments are their main strong point. I'm assuming the...

Re: This racist stupidity just never ends

The point is what caught the attention of the security guard to begin with? We don't even know what the racial makeup was of those at the pool--or at the apartment.
  9. Re: What is the upper size limit for singlehanding, for someone in his sixties?

That's pretty good. FWIW. SWMBO and I are 73. The last thing we worry about is the effort--on a larger boat, the winches, windlass, etc. tend to be powerful, and the physical effort is mainly...

Reed & Prince. Reasonable to drive, and reasonable to clean out the slots when removing. The latter is the main problem with square, etc. drives.

I've been through too many similar situations to make a judgement based on this kind of story. I've experienced many officious people in authority, and many who deal with these things with aplomb. ...

Re: This racist stupidity just never ends

Might well be racial profiling. It's also what security people have to deal with, and some do it badly. Not having been there, it's tough to say who escalated what should have been a quick check.

  18. Re: What is the upper size limit for singlehanding, for someone in his sixties?

Twelve single berths might be saying something about single-handing.
  19. Re: An opinion from the left of this gun confiscation?

Threatening with a gun is analogous to threatening speech--both are limited by law, if not illegal. Both are subject to subjective interpretation--the judgement of those who enforce the laws.
  20. Re: What is the upper size limit for singlehanding, for someone in his sixties?

We've been double-handing a NY 32 (26,000 lbs., with 1,000 ft of working sail), and recently are thinking about the aging process. Oddly, it is docking that is a big limiting factor--handling...

The tariff taxes the customers, not the shareholders. The shareholders and the corporations got a tax break. It's just another regressive tax.

Re: 20% Tarriff on foreign cars.

The tax isn't on vehicles, it is on vehicles, components and raw materials. You have to pay it if you buy a car--like any sales tax. It'a a 900% tax hike.
