Skin so soft good for Scottish midge as well.
Yes European Larch was best. I think Hybrid can be ok. A lot to do with the tree itself and if it grows in the right conditions. Scottish boatbuilders frowned on Japanese Larch. Maybe it is better...
Funnily enough, the chap who holds Atlantic Salmon record on Loch Lomond came from Paisley. He was an 83 yr old Edward Cochrane and the pic of his 44lb Salmon below. His ghillie (guide) was a 16...
Sure will......thanks for comments.
Thanks Martin. The engine is ubiquitous Yanmar 1gm10. It has a new cylinder head with freshwater only on the head since. It seems happy enough.
The plank with stainless rod holders? They hold...
Just a thanks to all who looked in here and answered all my questions etc.
Vagabond is now finished and turnkey ready for new season on Loch Lomond starting April.
The stainless quarter...
Yeah bronze probably. I have the grease now..........thanks guys.
Previous owner of this stern gear gave me a little tub of what looks like Lithium grease gone liquid . Given some of the set ups used elsewhere, I am dubious if it is proper stuff for it. The stern...
Once you steam wood, it will be kiln dried anyways.
Bit further on now.
I wish you well on recovery Jay and hope you have some comfort and peacefulness.
Just to add in my limited experience, keep the strake a good bit longer as you can steam a sharp bend in before you cut, but can never do it if you only have a few inches over the transom
Wishing you good health and many more years doing what you love. This has been a great read throughout.
Thanks for all the comments guys and boat building tech help/ideas throughout!
Thanks Nick and Martin. That boat looks Salty mate! Cheers for the sole pics as that is something that I am contemplating now. Mmm many ways to do it? It previously had plywood sole . I have...
Still at it. Starting to fit out now that all planking and ribbing is done. Oh my poor neighbours!
On 7/16" Larch planks, I have been marking the diagonal line at both sides of plank and then point to point across on the face. My planks are aligned to the curve that the board needs. Small leccy...
I was going to use the Larch on my small sections at bow and transom where port and starboard ribs are not continuous and broken up by the deadwood knees.
I think European Larch here is a real step up on Doug Fir Wiz.
Wishing you recovery and success with procedure. May your patience and long suffering get you a real good outcome next time.
Love, from Bonnie Scotland!
So the chalk that is used will be like French Chalk ie something like Soapstone? Not like the chalk you use for writing on a blackboard?
I have nearly all the Oak ribs cut for my Clinker Launch. The oak ribs on it certainly never lasted any longer than the planks. On getting them off they were dry and many snapped like they had rot...
I have a Singer 66k treadle machine. Yes the needle and drive will go through anything but it wont feed long heavy canvas or space the stitching suitably with heavy thread for sail or boat covers....
I would say you are mad taking it on yes. It is whether you and those around you can live with the madness! :d
This guy in Scotland does amazing work too. http://www.holteyplanes.com/blog/category/a6-norris-styled-smoother/
This is top work and viewing!
Interesting post Lupo and like anything that is troublesome,..............you could make more money cleaning windows lol!
How do they stay upright with no deep keel? Heavy ballast or do they only sail down wind? I am not a sailor.
Looks great!
Hope you heal up quick Jay. One sailor friend of mine has had a bit of ear off and now he has it on his nose............not the ear! Being a Scotsman they still haven't managed to cut the wallet...
Thanks fellas.
Ribs. I am going to buy Prime Euro Oak ( kiln dried) for the ribs. Cannot get suitable green or air dried around here. We have Scottish Sissal Oak, but every bit I have sampled is hipster wood...
Still plodding away. One of my planks cut through in half with hand saw. I go from around 30mm down to 14mm then run them through my cheap thicknesser. Heavy sawing that is.
Yes you will be buying a Tohatsu. They make and sell more small outboards than anyone.
Have to say that here in UK Tohatsu are superb VFM. It is hard now to justify the expense of the Honda,...
Quite a few times I have had scarfs or plugs in planks that I wanted to re- steam. I know that Epoxy will come apart doing this. Will resorcinal hold under steam? It is boil proof is it not?
Just fill the carb with fuel to get it started. Get a hose connection straight to the carb spigot and feed it from your tank hose (fittings removed) using the bulb. Keep squeezing the bulb to give it...
Take your point Lupo and do agree. Will mull it over. Maybe screws have more tendency to split a plank end? Ie when putting pressure on the countersink? Will do a few samples off boat with scrap....
Hood ends? Don't know whether to screw or nail 'em. I'll be using bronze screws where the garboard fixes to dead wood. Screwing the hood ends looks garish on a small boat? Scottish and Irish small...
I suppose it is the old "2 happiest days of a boat owners life" thing. Projects ...........you finish them, or you sell them.
Either way, they are finished :D
Thanks Nick. I have been avoiding the white coloured sap wood that goes from bark in about 2 inch. On the Larch, that wood is pretty hard with a lot of growth rings on it? Is any of it usable?
Is this a catch 22? I have a quarter sawn plank that may do for the first pair of garboards. However, there is another clean clean plank that could give me the first 2 pair of broad strake. But,the...
Thank you for your input Eric. Do you just make make a mark on Port and Starboard sheer strake, then strike a line under hull to line up your nail drillings through the planks for the ribs?
Hey Jay, many happy returns fella. What a specimen you are and still on the tools!
I have used that dolly method on larch for sole boards. On cold oak I find it struggles. More experimenting methinks and work quicker with hot oak.
What is the best and neatest method of folding a copper nail onto oak rib? My own boat and a few others around me here on The Clyde and Loch Lomond have used this method. The nails have a simple...
Very nice of you to say that Alan. My trade skills lie elsewhere really but they help in trying to build most things and to keep learning.
Ok Nick. Point taken. Boat must be 60 years plus.
See what you mean. In my naivety, I thought scarfs were something to be avoided like the plague. That was why I searched to get a long log of Larch. My old boatbuilder friend who died last month at...
Nick: Can you elaborate with a sketch of what you meant here?
Had to be said Y>
