I for one am quite glad you've not only pursued your own interest, but also let builders follow in your wake so to speak!
Dan
And you've got a built in editor!

Tom,
Now that life has tamed somewhat (after having kids 2&3 in quick succession), I'd love to catch a ride on your boat this summer as I'll be spending a fair amount of time in Three Lakes, WI. ...
You might check with Kayakman7 on the Hobie forum Wade, as he put in a Mirage drive in his.
Dan
The influence of Dick Newick on guys like Russ Brown have a hand in that.

There are a million pics of the CS 17 and 20 on duckworks over the years mostly with respect to boats doing the Texas 200. A 20 with a cabin just won the Everglades Challenge outright this...
You stand in a interesting middle ground Moby. You sail a production glass boat of which few were built & ahve the two wooden boats as well. Nice place to be really. BTW, you are my near neighbor...
Geoff,
It could also be too much helm. When I first build my Ulua I got the helm balance off a bit and moving the leeboard as little as 4 inches made a huge difference! Additionally, having the...
Maybe, but the outrigger and proa thread is 52 pages and there is little herd mentality. Did you think the same when the mirror sold 70,000 boats? Maybe it's just a good boat?
Neither. The winning boat was designed by Byrnes, but sailed by SOS and SandyBottom. I don't thing Graham made it this year.
Try craigslist. Kinda expensive new.

Exactly. One (or two) roofracks. I like Thule myself, and one hitch mounted "goalpost". It is either a y shape or a t and...
There's a couple good images of a Wa'apa catamaran on Gary Dierking's blog. If you made the boat in 3 parts--two parts are the hulls, one part would be a deck structure. Still a royal pain to...
Try 45' on the oc6.
Dan
Wade,
Try to do a trailer "goalpost" setup. This way you get a good seperation between the bars and good stability--especially with a bow tie down. You only need one bar on the car that way, but...
Have you checked out the outrigger and proa thread? What do you mean by ocean? Daysailing on the ocean in good conditions?
His sharpies are very burdensome for their type with lots of rocker, big rudder, and transom width all in proportion. That might be hard to duplicate with a very shallow version.
Dan
Strictly sail? Or the one at McCormac? Strictly Sail's right on Navy Pier.
I'm straight west in St. Charles. What were you thinking as far as a beer? Lots of pub options in Chicago.
Dan
Maybe Rory McDougal's exploits aboard the tiki 21 Cooking Fat. Round the world on a small cat.
There's also a Seaclipper 16 for sale in MN over on duckworks if you can go smaller.
Dan
More pics! Beautiful...

Russel Brown built a nice power proa. Good for rough water too. Not going to be that fast with a 2 hp though.

Reread this thread and loved it as much the second time. Thanks for the pointer KMac.

How about a bridle system like a multihull? It could be more or less fixed, but allow deplyyment and retreival over the cockpit side. Adjust the other tail of the bridle and you don't have to go...
Likewise, and if folks would stop quoting his acidic comments, I'd never have to read any of that drivil.
Dan
KMac, could you choose to keep it a bit more positive? This isn't the bilge. We've had too many good posters, masters of their craft, and interesting to boot chased off by a few overzealous...
I don't know if the price is right, but there's one over on the duckworks classifieds right now for 8500 asking price.
Dan
That makes sense if rowers can put out at most 1/4 hp. To counter the local conditions, one would need more power!
On the other hand Wade, there seems to be a decently successful J24 conversion to trimaran: Keel cut off, H20 amas, etc? I saw it over on boatdesign.net I favor the slim beach draggable designs,...
Fantastic! Thanks for the updates.
Dan
I'd either build it like Gary recommends (like a surfboard), or make a ply box in which you can stuff some foam for emergency flotation. Alternately the 2x4 being used above by the 2x4 plank ama...
Encinitas boat houses.

Just saw that tall ship Bounty went down--missing two crew at present.
As a yound grom, I used to regularly stand up on any longboard even stationary. Remember although the beam an length will be shorter, so will it's paddler. Check upt sups online for kids and you'll...
Looks great! I really might have to try a sof outrigger now that I've seen yours and the other one also at Sail OK!
Dan
Talk to John in Bastrop on the Yahoo duckworks group, although he come here sometimes too. He built it super light, and you coul could too. No reason to do chine longs or anything unless you want...
Dew.
Trems can be had pretty cheap. The other boat you might want to check out is Wood's Strike 18. It's not the looker the Discovery would be, but it runs with F24's. That, or the new Sea Rail 19, might...
I like the idea! I'm pursuing a similar course after football coaching ends for the season--likely with Richard Wood's Strike 15, a folding trimaran that will allow for rowing. My other fling is...
One could also use an inflatable sup like the pic above for several hundred pounds of displecement and a nice alternate means of enjoyment once at a destination! I really don't think a safety ama...
The challenge is getting that displacement right. How much can you push under? If it's turtled, you'll have to pull the ama over as well as pushing your safety ama under. Get that ama too buoyant,...
Here 'ya go.

Nor can I see 5 in a car toppable boat. How about two big sailing canoes? Or my favorites, an outrigger, tri, or cat? They'd have to be demountable, but doesn't this look fun?
...
How about a displacement power cruiser? Relaxed pace and potentially quiet(er) engine noise. That said, I'm usually a sailing guy.
Dan
The HSCA rigs are prety cool as well. I think if there was any sort of push to make a boat like this quicker to assemble, it would really be a fantastic camp cruiser to shame even the beauties that...
He builds his own surfboards, and it looks like a SUPish design specifically for the broken wing ama. Flat to sit on, and topped with a deck pad. I really like his setup, especially how he's making...
There's some cool boats in a few of the harbors, Monroe harbor is fun to take the water taxi from the 12th street to Navy pier. Otherwise, like many harbors, lots of glass production boats.
