Very good to see the restoration going so well. As a matter of interest are there any of the Paul Gartside "Sjogins" under construction yet?

1.Dickie's of Tarbert.
2. I have been on the "Vindilis" type "Lindy 2" A pretty boat but somehow rather cluttered compared with C3. Harrison Butler was a friend of Albert Strange, somewhere I have...
The inside head room was enough for me (5'11) under the hatch.Further forward less so but not too bad between the beams!
I will study the drawings again, they are all made up of small pages, but I...
Absolutely they are, but the full size ones have a lot more detail showing alterations, calculations, all sorts of stuff.
You can, as has been mentioned, get all the drawings for C3 from Mystic Seaport museum, this is because Albert was a friend of WP Stephens the American "guru" who wrote amongst other things "Canoe...
The length of the keel does of course have an effect on the ability to turn tightly, but it is a question of what you get used to, before we had the engine fitted we sailed up rivers and creeks...
Great to see a thread about Redwing (Cherub 3), of all the boats I have owned, and Im now on the 6th, she was the one that tugged the heartstrings most. We only sold her as we were retiring and...
Its surprising what gets to be called a "Pilot Cutter" these days! There are several types called Falmouth Pilots or Falmouth Cutters, that are in fact yachts. I doubt if any yacht built in the 30's...
Those who enjoyed Ben Pesters "Just Sea and Sky" might also enjoy his other book "Through the Land of Fire" about his (and my) voyage to Cape Horn.
I have had a look at both books. There isnt much difference from the drawings point of view, DS has a small drawing of her rigged as a cutter. The main difference is that in MG's book you get MG's...
I have a photo somewhere, currently cant find it, of Dyarchy, Carlotta, Kelpie (Crispin Rushworth Lund's boat at that time) and Moya a most beautiful large prawner yacht racing in the Old gaffers...
I have a book called"Wood Water and light" which is a collection of photos by Benjamin Mendlowitz with articles by Joel White.
One of the articles is about a Rushton Vesper replica (Twilite) built...
Not me Gareth! Im just his Dad.
I have a Tammie Norrie that I built some years ago strip planked.I wanted a workman like boat for general use and I wanted to try that building method. It turned out well if rather heavy due to the...
Yes, but without the Queen there would have been no boats.
Andrew looking at your side view photos enables one to form an Idea of what things might look like.Referring to Hiscocks Cruising under Sail there is a photo in my edition of "Cardhu" one of L.Giles...
Andrew, strangely one sees that type of coaming and, in my view, dangerous, companionway on some modern boats like Swans and earlier Olin Stephens boats. They usually have stainless "bannisters" to...
We usually sit on the cockpit floor with a shower bag hanging from the boom. Wouldnt do this in a Marina or crowded place but we try to avoid those.
Brian, the skiff was launched at Easter and is fine. Lousy weather since has limited use.
With regard to your scow question, we do not really have an equivalent here, the dinghy clubs have fast...
When does a canoe become a Trimaran?
I come late to this thread which is very interesting. I own a Rushton Princess canoe which we built of clinker ply.I sail it mostly sitting on the floor, ie; 5mm from the water. In gusty conditions...
Yes, its finished. I've been fiddling about modifying some oars to suit. We could launch tomorrow but the weather is good and I have been working on our cruising boat (35ft Buchanan) its a question...
Looks like "La Recouvrance" built in France by I think Chantier Guip, and launched at the Brest festival in 1992, or the one before.
I am not too sure about the thread! 1.Im not up on posting photos, 2.My workshop does not bear inspection!
I have known John for some years, you will see from his photo that he is sailing up Carrick...
Thanks for the info, the only thing I cant see is the dimensions. Has there been any write up anywhere? Im currently busy on a John Hesp rowing skiff, but I can see a lugger like that a couple of...
Robert, what is the lugger in the sailing photo?
Sorry for the lousy description of the setup. The topsail is hoisted when the main is up, the topsl halyard is pulled tight.A rope from the bottom of the topsl yard runs through a eye on the gaff...
I think I would go for a longer topsail yard, it would help it set better without the Topsl peak tending to "fall off". On our working boats here the bottom of the yard is "strapped" to the gaff...
Im afraid I missed the regatta, being away, info should be available somewhere, but she was certainly here the first week in August. She looks very strong and plain in the best sense, nothing fancy,...
The boat is called Kochi, from the place where she was built. She was here a couple of weeks ago and certainly looks good and powerful.
Gareth,Its Falmouth week and Restronguet Regatta is coming up on tuesday. The Salcombe yawls are still going strong, but the place is just too crowded.Better in the spring or autumn. I like...
Gareth, I dont know when you were last in Salcombe. It is certainly a beautiful place but as far as sailing is concerned to be avoided during the "summer". I have never seen more RIB's in one...
What I have found works pretty well is to have a "jaw" on one side of the boom only, with the boom itself forming the other side. Drill a hole in the "jaw" for a simple string luff tensioner.
I have sailed in Bill Sergeants Selway Fisher 50/50, it is very stable and easy to sail, Bill made some long coastal trips in it. Neither wold it be hard to build I would think.
I have found, like Andrew, that tallow is good for many things on a gaff rigged boat, jaws, saddles, lacings etc. It has more body than the oil type stuff. Besides the dog loved it and could often be...
Try "Chasse Maree" the French traditional boat magazine, they had a biographical article on Cornu some years back. Also maybe "Pichavant" the French builder who did several of his boats.
A very...
Lewis? I like the look of that dinghy but dont seem to be able to download the plans, does it come in half? Any guidance on downloading would be welcome.
Fidelis is at Mylor near Falmouth, Monie is in Falmouth.
John, glad you have got the book. It has been well received, try his other one "Through the land of fire"
Any up to date news on the rebuild?
Hymns. "He who would true valour see, let him come hither" etc.
We sailed our 28ft Albert Strange yawl "Redwing" ex Cherub 3 both with and without an engine, in the latter case the cut away in the rudder was blocked up which had been done for a race to the...
Lovely model Duncan. Ed used to be keen on bridges at one time. Boats can be all consuming!
One cant help but reflect that it all may have been a lot easier when designing consisted of whittling away at a bit of wood!
There must have been a lot of those old sea Captains doing classes. The one I met up with was a Capt.Culpepper who taught evening classes on the Cutty Sark. The first part of the evening was taken up...
Those seeking to further understand Erskine Childers, and I tend to agree with Andrew's views, should read his biography "Erskine Childers" by Jim Ring, this gives the whole story.
Yes he trades under his own name.I had a boat that was built by him some years ago, he is a high class builder. There was an article in Classic boat about him and the Victorys some time back. I...
Ask John Perry the boatbuilder in Southsea, he builds them.
There is a photo of Vixen sailing in 1899 in a book called "A Thirst for the sea" by Hugh and Robin Popham, Stanford books1979. The book is about Erskine Childers. The photo shows that Vixen was...
I have sailed one of these over here, belonging to one Bill Sergeant, I believe he originally commissioned the design. It is easy to sail, stable and comfortable,it had a "Batwing" rig, Bill has made...
Its a pity there wasnt a bit more wind. This week is the oyster festival, and among other things the boats will be racing on Sunday.
We will drop down to the tent for half a dozen some time and...
