A satisfying ending .
A satisfying ending .
I think we would find it connects to a threaded rod sent down to the keel :for lifting the boat . The same are on the quarters ,connected to the transom.
I was searching for something else ,but was stopped in my tracks by this https://jacksonville.craigslist.org/boa/d/yulee-lyman-utility/7510429787.html . I have no connection with this .
J ; have you seen the book The Adirondack Guide-Boat by Kenneth and Helen Durant ? It includes the complete documentation of a Grant boat by John Gardner. The details include the Foot Plates : thin...
Here's mine .

One definitly lights a single candle at our age ;but congratulations and hope you have something of interest on your work table .
In the deep South my main concern is the UV resistance of a varnish .I used Captains for a long time ; switched to Flagship for what is advertised as higher UV resistance . Is there a recognised...
It seems the floor is some type of Stabalized Earth . Did digging the hole give you any insight into its composition? Boiled Linseed oil topcoat ? Easier on the feet than concrete?
A wonderfull presentation on the search for the NW passage came to Mystic a few years ago .Way up inside there they came apon Natives who not only had never seen iron befor ; they had never seen wood...
Really nice ;thanks for posting the process. That ladder is exactly what I need to rig befor I get my old ass in trouble . I've printed this out to put in my boat bag -a first step .A ladder may...
Ah yes ;hand pain . I've been takeing fishoil lozenges every day for years now .It seems to help.
I like to use a standing turkshead to stop a splice from being forced into a sheeve as a tackle goes chockablock . This is completly seperate from the structure of the splice and is sacrificial .Also...
Was there wind the day of the accident ?Thinking also of Ever Given ;I wonder if allowable windage will prove to be the practical limit to the size of the container carrriers .
Oxolic acid is the active ingredent in Bar Keepers Friend ,which is available at the local hardware store ? Thanks for this info .I bought my first box from Woodcraft .
Thanks Andrew ;that's very interesting .We need big Coir and Des Pawson over here .We do have large diameter polypropylene .
My freind got rid of his inflatable and got a pretty sail and oar boat for his tender .He's now fallen in love with it and hates to spoil her sheerline with the store bought stuff .He could go...
A freind is thinking about the rope route but I understand Ben's discription of the desireability of padding the top of the rail as well as well as the side when aproaching finely finniished...
Great to see a professional turn over . Were the two chain hoists used alternately ?
That is beautiful work Timo ; on a beautiful design . Maybe a 4 cycl outboard doesn't need the sound cover .My Yamaha is very quiet ;engine noise just isn't an issue for me .
That's an impressive glass job . How much googe did it take? I've got the same jump benches : a nice tool .
Is the floor just the dirt that was there when the shop was built or was sand brought in ?
If you want the frames not structurally required I think you should have them ,but thin for their width like canoe frames .No problem sitting on those .I would add them after the glasswork is...
Still OK to kick design ideas around? Just for the deck layout . Here's a Weston Farmer take on an outboard boat with flush deck forward and canvas sleeping shelter aft....
Very nice!
James , thank you for pointing out L.F. Herreshoff 's "Some Hints on Model Making" . Those are a treasure I had not seen : including ,as you know , photos of the original work room . Off Center...
I went in with another person, I think by posting on this forum, and we got an order together for Harbor big enough to be delivered to Atlanta with no shipping charge. This was in 2005. I ran out...
Have you seen the amazing video tour of Nathaniel Herreshoff's model room on the Herreshoff Museums website ? His tools are there as well as the models . This is just a shard...
My father had to stay behind and be part of the policing of occupied Germany after the surrender. Tight wires were stretched across the roads in the night to decapitate the GI's moving in motorcycles...
I remember Chuck's generosity well . I was working a few bugs out on my newly launched boat here ,including some battery problems . He offered help and later I recieved a book in the mail : The ...
The introduction is the best part of the book, stressing the Cat's practicality as a single hander. Oddly the boats that are then presented are mostly overdeveloped race boats. The 2 shown are the...
True David ; I was reacting to the editor's comments on deadrise, which were happily flexible enough to allow the inclusion of Hilda among the 12 boats shown.
Here is Hilda. There's allot of deadrise to get a livable cabin space on the small boat. I guess this was considered less detrimental than raising the cabin top. She must have worked well enough.

Here are a few pages from a print on demand paperback (11by17) from Toad Hill Press that I've enjoyed. This content is old (1902). From The Rudder.

No cement in Roman concrete? This is like being told there's no SantaClaus !
It's just a simple flat plate with a piano hinge. This does give unimpeded access to the centerline where the mooring cleat is . My boat has a long straight keel and I am launched into a...
My boat has an operable windshield through which I can handle lines on the mooring cleat , the anchor being stored and deployed from the cockpit . The operable windshield is also very cooling in the...
I read here I think that 80% of the solar energy that strikes the panels gets converted into heat . How hot will they get on a Summer day? The radiant heat from the panels may be a bit much for...
On my stripper canoe, which has very little stem , I set a piece of hard copper pipe athwart just aft of the stem . The outside I'd roughened with sandpaper and the epoxy bonded it thoroughly to the...
One thing about buying used ;you'd save enough money to add more power and panels if necessary .
I just showed the Hand as the raised deck was there at the start .Would you be tempted if Tautog was for sale ?
Here's William Hand's take on a tabloid cruiser .

For designs this size that must restrict beam ,I think the raised deck of the Wayward shown makes the most sense .it's important to fully use the beam you've got to best advantage in the cabin . The...
I bleached a weathered pair of spruce oars to good effect .Oxalic acid from Woodcraft, if the hardware store doesn't have it .
Maybe Water ballast would be worthwhile in a boat designed for this purpose .Run the boat light to maximize efficiency : but if it breezes up add ballast as needed to steady the boat and restrain ...
Rgthom ; I was interested in your graph. Would the inflection point of the plotted curve for your theoretically ideal hull occur at 4 knots? . Whatever compromise you finally strike between...
I can see how this is a job best handled by an NA but I’m also of the group that thinks looking back to the earliest power boats is a fruitful starting place . There’s a lot of experience and...
Thank you Jeff for the great photos .I've not seen the rig in that detail before .
Who is the oldest manufacturer of marine products in the United States ?
As for why two masts in these small boats : maybe one reason is because it's highly advantages to keep the sail area and spar weight low in open centerboard boats even though one big sail might be...
