    I believe that whalers were adopted for their ability to land through surf. That is why they went on to develop full U shaped ends.

    Yes, both luff tension and downhaul tension pull the boom forwards. There is usually so much luff tension to get the sail to stand that the boom won't go anywhere anyway.

    Probably wood grained inside, with plain scrubbed bottom boards, coming up fuzzy cream.
    As a working boat probably had a wine glass transom with a tuck above the built down stern.

    Another example of the US going over the top. We have things like suspended sentences or being bound over to deal with stuff that does not warrant being banged up but still requires a sanction.

    I am so old that when I started the slick stuff was all you could get. If it is for halyards, which are not in the hand all of the time you are sailing the feel is much less of an issue.
