    You ar going to have to grind off a lot of metal. Relieving the inside edges should not affect releasing the pattern from the sand so I would carve away the wood, rather than the bronze.

    Does stain stain epoxy?
    I would continue to plane down the shear as advised by Canoeyawl. Breaking those sharp edges with sandpaper wrapped around dowel is also good advice from the same post.
