Looking really good, nice job. On the traveler for main sheet, you run the line from stbd aft corner to port aft corner OVER the tiller and that keeps it from tangling when you tack, versus...

Yeah, congrats on the babe! Jeff, Awesome that you have the metal working skills and tools to complement your wood-working.
I enjoy seeing all your creativity and home-made solutions.
I'm building a Devlin design right now and can say that taping the outside taints and chines was one of the easiest steps of the whole process. Used a roller to wet them out, a squeegee to even...
What kind of boat is that etype38?
Could you please share a pic of entire boat? Looks like quite a project.
Thanks
Nice craftsmanship on your handle on the daggerboard there.
Yeah, daggerboard and centerboard logs are notorious for having subtle (or even not subtle) leaks. Hopefully you have it sealed good....
She is flipped using a rotisserie style with an engine hoist at each end. Went well.
It's documented in THIS "Flipping a Surf Runner 25 Hull with How-to Video THREAD. I created a separate...
As there is general interest in how to flip a larger boat, I thought Id make a separate thread for how we did our boat flip versus burying it in my Devlin Surf Runner 25 thread. I can put a link...
That's a good thread, thanks for sharing. It is mostly about fore-and-aft center of gravity. I'm looking for the Vertical Center of Gravity (VCG). I.e. how high up the transom should I mount...
Still could use some ideas on how to estimate the vertical center of gravity on the transom would be, so I can mount a 3/4" eye there for a hoist point for the "rotisserie" style flip coming up....
Got the first coat of bottom paint on today.

Thanks Gray Duck, and nope on my being an auto mechanic, except for work on my own cars. ;-) Ugh, I can't tell you how many times I've climbed under that boat (and hit my head on things).

I subscribed to Off Center Harbor and found the videos there very well done and helpful. "Thanks for that tip!
I went forward with the dynel as the last layer on the hull and it came out...
Thanks all for the comments so far on using Dynel. Very helpful. Will check out the Off Center Harbor site too.
I used System 3 on a prior boat (the Morbic). On this Surf Runner I'm using non-blush MAS. I have both Fast and Slow Part B, both in temperature controlled containers and I've played around with...
Since I was catching up on the forum this morning, thought I'd post a couple more recent pics of this Surf Runner build. The Stem and Keel are ready for the filleting, including layers of glass on...
AndrewT, I presume this is a Devlin design, right? I wanted to put flat chines on the Surf Runner I'm presently building, which he highly recommended too, and he sent me a bunch of pictures of a...
You might point the builder of that Catspaw stripplank to my Morbic stripplank site. It's a similar type build, it appears, and he may find some of the pictures useful at certain steps. Morbic...
Yes, I Χwould like to follow this build. Keep the pictures coming!
Good luck with it
Cutting gains on both sides avoids the "feather" edge challenge, but they both work and one side is what the designer suggested so sounds like you have a plan.
BTW, I heard we're doing a Penobscot 13 build for an upcoming program, so keep posting your pictures - super helpful for other builders. :-)
Thanks. The Phoenix III was built (besides paint) at the Wind and Oar boat school in Portland, OR. That's the place you are seeing. I'm a volunteer instructor there. Usually we go into...
The original that Sam Devlin designed and built had a Volvo Penta 160HP. Sam suggested a 200HP outboard for it, for my purposes and he modified the design for that.
Part 2 of post..
Overhead joints got small rectangular “tabs” of glass over thickened epoxy fillets. >80 Vertical joints, bulkheads to hull, got a thickened epoxy fillet, 2 layers of 12 oz biax,...
Here are some pics of a Sam Devlin Surf Runner 25, I started in late August. Sam modified the plans to accept a 200HP outboard. I’ll add to this thread occasionally with updates, but more detail,...
You cut the gain on both planks, half the depth on each. I think I have some pics of this on my Phoenix build (link in signature).
Another tip to consider, instead of using staples for your...
The boat project that never ends.. like most of them. :-)
Thanks for sharing your mods with us Jeff. Good luck with it.
Gary
Terrific - nice job!
Great job on the sewing - impressive!
> Have you had your Phoenix III out any?
We've had the Phoenix out a number of times, but now she lives in Utah with my daughter (built for her).

Wow, that's ambitious Jeff. Seems to me this boat carries enough sail without that additional at top, but I guess if you have really light wind it could be useful. Next, you may have to come...
Thanks Matthew for the suggestion to look at Sam Devlin's 25' Surf Runner! After all my homework, I decided that's the boat for my build. Since I want to put an outboard on it, I had Sam...
Jeff, Usually it's big wind that makes us think about reefing, versus a covid shot! Sorry that hit you so bad.
I haven't had to reef yet, but it's on the short list to try it out. Looks...
I hear you Cracked Rib! If I would have known when I started what I know now.. But it's been a great experience and learning so far. We'll go with the sprit, at least for now. Since I can...
You're making great progress Jeff - you'll be set for a fun summer!
I just keep everything in the bottom of the boat, ready for the next hoist, and I put a cover over the entire top of the...
I don't have a brail set up. When I drop the main it comes down in between the lazy jacks and is held along with the sprit on top of the boom. That's how I leave it when I put the boat on the...
I had been looking for an inexpensive tiller extension idea, not willing to spend over $100 for some commercial options. Here is what I came up with for $21 total. I've had it out for one solo...
Yeah Jeff, your paint's looking really good. This definitely looks a lot quicker to set up than what you had before. I hope it works well for you.
I have found that purchase on both the...
Ross is retired now. I didn't intend to paint my comments as negative as they came across, sorry. I do really like how the Phoenix came out when completed.
It is good you made them long - I thought I had left plenty and ended up with just barely enough length, so they would slide easily on the mast. Good luck with them!
Lillystone's plan are alright, now that I've purchased some plans from another designer that are worse. Maybe it's all relative. But, honestly, at the time of building my Phoenix there were many...
Launched this one from the ramp at Willamette Park, on Willamette river.

Thanks Jeff. I wish I would have had some documentation like this too - that's why I documented it. I had no idea how much effort it was going to be to figure this out.
On the boom downhaul, I...

Finished rigging the boom downhaul, with more purchase. Works much better to adjust luff tension.

Sprit
After set up at the ramp (which took 12 minutes), and before hoisting the main on the water, the sprit lies next to the boom, cradled inside 2 sets of lazy...
Thought I would update this thread with a summary (with gory detail) on the latest rigging on this Phoenix III , since I’ve had a chance to take her out on the water and give her a test spin.

Matt, were your screws stainless steel?
My thanks too Todd. I know there's a lot opinions on epoxy and paint, many times from what people read. It's nice to have people like you and others just say what they do and what they have...
Todd, Nice looking work you do, and great info that one can get by without primers with products like brightside over West epoxy.
How many days do you wait on the West to cure, before sanding and...
Super important to get all amine blush off and wait for epoxy to thoroughly cure before using poly urethanes like Pettit EZpoxy and I think Interlux Brightsides is the same. Or the paint won't...
I've used SS screws into sapele, and haven't had a problem yet. If I do, I'll do something stronger next time.
