Don't know if the survivor was a CFI - news reports have referred to him as an "instructor" and as "a more experienced pilot". More details are supposed to be released tomorrow or Monday.

Pretty much everything on Chippy is straight thread, thru hull wise. The only thing that has tapered threads I can think of is the raw water strainer and fittings.
