Kev, pm'd you.
We missed you, Emily, and let me just say that Paul was a fountain of good cheer throughout.
I dunno Rich, but we'd all like to see you, myself especially. Gotta be a tough choice.
It's off to the show tomorrow and I'm looking forward to seeing old friends and making new. So, just a reminder about the post boat show get-together, in case anyone's missed it and would like to...
The Ledgers will be there.
First you steam out, then you set two miles if heavy gill net. The next morning you haul those miles of net in by hand, you and your mates. Then it's back to Yarmouth where your wife guts them on...
This guy has some interesting ideas on the Mars Colony, and he's no fan of Elon Musk...

It would have been nice seeing you again, Mickey. There's always next year!
We'll look forward to seeing you there, Cris.
I think that 7 in 10 is the theoretical maximum.
Kevin, we're all looking forward to meeting you in person!
Jim
Peter, if you go into the advanced reply there's an icon that looks like a short section of film. Pressing this icon opens a box with a space in which to paste the Youtube address. Then the video...
I'm sure they're grateful for that, Chippie, your explanation was concise and to the point, and if nothing else it saved them the time of wading through mine.
Lemme tell ya, Craig, it's just like every day's Sunday.
We're counting on that.
We are having a handful of Forumites over after the Mystic Show. The itinerary is that individuals will be trickling in here on Sunday afternoon, the 26th, and staying the night. Here in this case...
It turns out that that might not be such a good thing, Jake.
Have a good one, Paul!
Jim
Well thanks, Chippie, it's all clear now.
I'm like a blind man in a dark room sometimes, just feeling my way along.
Jim
Let me explain just how I ended up measuring the thickness of shavings with a digital caliper.
Here's the problem...carvel planking, you scribe a plank to the one either above or below it, take...
Nah, Chippie, I bit my lip and didn't cry, as I was taught.:d
Truth be told it was numb. Pulling it out with pliers was a bit sharp, though.
Jim
Perhaps, Mush, but maybe one day you'd walk down to the beach and see your sweet boat floating on a mooring and all of a sudden you'd see her as others do.
Yeah, nah, Chippie, I was just trying to get away from the Japanese shavings thing and back to some relevant boat talk. But you were right bringing it over to this thread if you want to explore the...
There's a tendency, when making a mast, to let ones hands slide along the mast while walking from one end to the other. Don't do this, especially if it's a Douglas fir mast.
...
I enjoy pushing a plane, Chippie, although I do have to stop more frequently now than I used to.:d
I'll explain what I was up to in a while, it's not as ridiculous as it may seem. Right now,...
With all due respect to MushCreek, I think that there is some relevance here. What's in question is the early stages of setting up molds, transom, keel and stem. After that the plans are less...
Yeah, Nick, and who actually looks at that stuff, hanging on grandma's wall.:d
Let's get back to some cool boats.
How precious is that, then!!!:d
Calendars for the gift shop?
Doug fir is just a splintery wood. Can you take light passes and climb cut? Both of these methods will reduce splintering but might not eliminate it completely.
What does a BM router bit look...
That's just making shavings for their own sake, Nick, a rather pointless endeavor, useful only for exhibition.
There's an apparent obsession among tool aficionado's with the micro-thin shaving. ...
Well, not so much the individual shaving, Jake, but, say a stack of three so it averages out. Turns out a three thousandth shaving is pretty coarse, depending on your definition of coarse, of course.
That's a good one, Chippie.:D
But to that point, Chippie, there was a day last winter when I was doing just that, adjusting a plane while measuring the thickness of the shaving with a digital...
Happy Birthday, Thad!
That's it, Jake. A marker actually makes an excellent line for cutting in many cases. The edge of the line is very sharp and and the line very visible, an important quality in a low-light...
Another "when I was" story...
When I was working building aluminum boats we marked the aluminum plate with a magic marker, outside the line. The inner edge of the line was where you cut.
Maybe Chippie has one.
I haven't come this far to make a crap job of it now, Jordan.:D Actually, I find the woodworking problem very interesting, just how to get a perfect roundness on a thing like this. I keep turning...
The force is strong in this one.
Ya gotta loosen up a little. It might go against all the learned habits that have served you well for years, but trust your battens, not the plans. Those plans are probably not as accurate as the...
Inflation is hitting all of us hard, what with the price of gas, plywood and steaks. And now there's a new, completely unexpected blow to my wallet.
As the mast gets rounder the amount of...
Chippie, I received both of your PM's this morning and replied to both. There is something wrong somewhere, because all of my replies but one don't show up in my sent item folder.
I'm sorry about that, Chippie, I've replied to each one. The PM function seems a little buggy.
Jim
I've been worried about you, Chippie, welcome back. By the way, in case you don't get my PM, I've received all of yours. My regards to Mrs. Chippie.
Jim
Look at it this way, Jordan, it's more varnishing than the cabin sides, inside and out, but not done to such a high degree. There, now I feel better.
Has it been that long? It's a good...
It'll probably last another ninety-seven, Roger, which is more than any of us can hope for...or want.
So, here we are at last, at the point of convergence of two threads. That certainly...
I recently found out, on the Facebook "Paddlewheelers and Steamboats of the World" page, the name and location of the wreckers yard in the original post. It's known as "Gregory's Graveyard" and was...
Cuz it's like a drug to you, isn't it? C'mon...admit it!
They left a whole lot of coal, oil and iron for us to find, which was nice of them.
That's a fine piece of clothespin joinery there, Roger, but I do have to ask...are you keeping that bit of old mast for sentimental reasons? A bit of the original fabric, maybe?
Why. I...
The exterior side is going to get a stopped chamfer detail on the frame. These were routed in. The bottom example in the photo is a chamfer as routed. The ends are rounded due to the way the...
