Thanks, Nick, that's a handy guide.

Thanks, Nick, that's a handy guide.
Thank you to everyone who responded.
I drove around and found 2 relatively local sources for ethanol-free gas. I also talked with the driver of the tank truck that supplies a local marina with gas....
I am getting the impression that the availability of non-ethanol gas varies widely from place to place. I do not find it generally in gas stations near me.
I think I may need the range and power of a gas motor, and the ability to refuel quickly, rather than waiting for a battery to recharge.
I do have another question, though: Are 4-stroke outboards...
I am shopping for a ~2.5hp outboard to power my little sailboat, a John Welsford SCAMP.
Having watched a video from Motor Boating & Yachting Magazine, I began by looking for motors from Honda,...
Well, he comes across as grumpy early in the movie, but he mellows and fills out his character as it progresses. To my mind the real star in that movie is Katharine Hepburn; the way her vitality and...
It looks to me like you've got an adhesion problem between the primer and the topcoat. I see what look like blisters forward of the chip. You could dab in a bit of topcoat for the summer, but you'll...
We're down to one dog, after decades of bouncing between two and three. I can rattle their names off in my sleep, and every one of them was a joy.
Another easily available remedy is White Vinegar and water. It takes about a gallon of vinegar, well diluted, to de-stink a "fully skunked" adult Golden Retriever.
(He still retained an aroma, but...
From UFO's to soap-making in one thread. Gotta love the Bilge!
From my small experience with scythes, they like a coarse, toothy edge. You need to carry a "scythe stone", a long, coarse sharpening stone on a handle, in your pocket to tune the blade up as soon as...
That looks like a brush blade on the scythe. A grass blade is longer and skinnier. Still, a good score!
Another simple idea for foot braces is the glued-on wooden cleats that Phil Bolger used on his Gloucester Gull dory. They are fitted to the planking where your feet naturally fall, and angled to...
If the rope-and-plastic-pipe feels too floppy, a pair of small racks with half-round notches in their top edge could be glued to the planking between 2 of your frames. Drop the plastic pipe into the...
It's not everyone who has a Bridgeport "just sitting there"! :D
Your gain setup on the Bridgeport looks dandy. I was going to ask if you had made up a John Brooks "Gain-o-matic" router jig for the gains, but you seem to have that detail under control.
This looks like a fun project. I love the looks of the Peregrine!
In your photos I see a window at either end of the room. Have you measured to make sure you can get the finished boat out? :)
If you're building a bird's mouth spar, why not just coat the inside faces of the staves with epoxy as you're gluing it up? Am I missing something obvious?
I always found Michael to be a good source for information on such topics as boatbuilding, naval architecture, and the economics of commercial fishing. I miss his posts and I'm sorry to hear the...
My first question would be: Do your centerlines all line up?
Then, are your frames plumb and square?
Are your transom and stem the correct distance apart?
If all those are correct, then I'd go...
The figure at the near right corner of the scaffold is a photographer with a camera on a tripod. It does appear to be an execution rather than a lynching. However, it *is* in terribly bad taste,...
Well, I'm not quite old enough to remember back before fiberglass came along, but I do remember back before epoxy! ;D
I turned 60 when Jim Ledger started his catboat thread.
I am sorry to hear of Glen's passing as well. His was a friendly and familiar voice on this forum. Fair winds to you, Glen!
That annoying slap-slap of the flat bottom may be part of the reason why Joel White designed the Nutshell pram's bow the way he did. Heavier for sure, but quieter in chop. There is no perfect boat;...
A Harpy Eagle.
OK, how about the size of an eagle?
I'd say it's just about Crow sized. That's judging by the texture of the feathers and tree bark.
Paint it now, before you flip it over. It's easier and you'll get a better job.
AND, just looking at it will inspire you to get it finished and in the water!
Sam Crocker drew a pretty 16' catboat he named Dogwatch. I can't remember where I saw her plans. And there's also Phil Bolger's Harbinger.
So these were catch-and-release? Gorgeous fish! What did you catch them on?
Actually, I think what makes a ball cap sink is the plastic bill stiffener. Change that to one made of polypropylene and it might just float.
As much as I love my WB ball cap, on the water I stick with a full brimmed hat. I've had enough skin damage for one lifetime, thank you.
Now if you'd had your WoodenBoat boathook (that's designed to float upright!), you'd have had no problem picking up your WoodenBoat hat. Perhaps we should all get together and encourage the...
Two hours ago I was rowing along a shoreline in the upper reaches of Casco Bay when somebody thoughtlessly left a rock ledge right in my path. The nerve!
Thus proving that even with a pretty good...
Go to a few auto parts stores and look through their selection of clip-on wide-angle rear view mirrors. I found a nice wide one at Advance Auto Parts. Then build a short mast to hold it and you're...
I'll be there on Saturday with old friends from New London.
As someone once said, "I'd rather be here wishing I was out there than out there wishing I was here!"
Thanks, Emily, that clarifies things.
I have no doubt about the balance of cashflow between Texas and the federal government. What I'm wondering about is the Texas Republican Party's platform. Are they really adopting that list of crazy...
Where did this news item originate? I would think the NYT or WaPo would be all over it, but I can't find anything.
I can see I need to look up Henry James. That is a sentence you could swim in!
Sixty-nine views and no replies...
I'm reminded of the aphorism, "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all."
It *is* one curious looking boat.
I think "That's not writing, that's typing!" is from Dorothy Parker, well known for her biting wit.
Bobbys,
I'm in total agreement with you and Obama on this issue. The families should be left out of it. Certainly in the cases of Tiffany and Barron, and maybe Erik too. They took no role in the...
Y'all inspired me to hop on my bike and peddle down to the farmers' market. I just picked up a quart of berries for tonight's dessert.
U S presidents commonly traveled in open carriages and cars and waved to the public, until 1963.
And movie theaters, concerts, lectures, fireworks displays...
Lovely! How much does she weigh? And what length oars do you use with her?
BUMP!
I was down in the shop this morning mucking about when what should surface but my dog-eared copy of WoodenBoat #1, with the article about Nellie. Geez, what a pretty little thing she is!
