Not currently to this stage of the game with my lobsterboat, but im just curious as to what the easiest, cost-efficient way to do this is before I start caulking? Just letting her fill with rain...
Ive always been curious as to why you dont like white oak? Terrible accident with it? I think I may of solved my wood selection problems, but thank you for the offer.
I'm a big fan of Doug fir too. The problem is, I can only get it whole sale or finshed dimensions at 4 bucks a LINEAR foot! Malarke! Is there a cheaper source in the northeast for rough stock
Hello all,
Laminating the frames on my boat this spring. Original frames were 1 inch by 2.5 inch steam bent white oak frames, about 18 inches on center. I'm curious to know what wood some of you...

unique cabin design for a Beal boat. Very tug-ish looking. Whats her dimensions? It appears to be a rather deep boat aft...was her deck built directly on the floor timbers, or framed above it? I...
I would imagine it was a time saving move(the frames i mean). Any planks that need replacing, I planned on just scarphing anyways, i never liked the look of butt blocks. Oh, and what is a Monterey?
Well shes been sittin for almost 3 years before i got it on a concrete slab. Shes outta shape, no doubt about it, but nothin that didnt get pulled back together. Majority of its loss is about...
Mcintosh's book is good. I have alot of the books of the trade from my time in Eastport. Not many out there on strictly lobster boat construction.
The longevity of Beals built boats is pretty amazing. Especially considering that some of the earlier ones where built with whatever wood they had, fastened with iron. "Just gotta get it done" was...

I have a couple of Gardners books. I believe Wooden Boats to Build and Use has a few of his old articles in it.
Of course it matters, Carl. I didn't realize National Fisherman was an corporate company. I just remember browsing through the magazines at The Boat Schools library (or marine trade centers library...
Ive had luck with it Bead and cove route. Be mindful of how toxic the stuff is while your working with it.
Does anybody know where old National Fisherman copies are for sale? Ive seen alot of the issues from the 60's with really cool plans with offsets in them, and would love to find them.
Thanks
A gallon of west system epoxy and it respective hardener should cover around 400 sq feet on its saturation coat and just a hair under 500 on build up coats there after.
stop in to the lowell brothers in yarmouth. If your in holden, just keep drivin right to moose island marine in Eastport, ME. Good things to be had.
If you go to westsystem.com theres a chart with all the various brands of hardener mixed with 105 and its properties. http://www.westsystem.com/ss/typical-physical-properties/

Attitude? i knew the west coast was soft, but wow. I do believe in the industry we are all involved in, and madly in love with i might add, the "right tool" isn't always the best tool depending on...
Yeah, you know good point with the screw. I tried that method at first, didn't think of cutting off the head though, but was concerned that a lot of the fastners didn't need replacing. I soon found...
Yeah I don't. I'm not into "gently" pulling bungs, I want them out. I got bigger fish to fry. Sincerley though, thank you for the advice, but I have exhusted that method, and I Have the better part...
Hi all,
Any one have any luck with a homemade bung puller? I searched for one, and to my despair, found one for a whoppin 260 dollars on amazon. Id like to hear some thoughts and opnions for you...
A new method as evolved. I will be scarphing the rotten ends of the frames(keel end) with strip built epoxy laminates. The planking will be bored a size or so over, then filled with epoxyed bungs or...
yep, nice little place for a puddle to form I do say. The only thing I can think that saved the keel was the oil bath it had been taking for years while under way.
Boats drying out anyways. Steamed white oak on cedar, round bilged semi displacment jonesporter. Ill try and get some pictures up
No cracks or splits, just a few years of poor ventilation under collapsed shrinkwrap, turned the end of the frames into a sponge.
Currently sistering the ribs in my 34 footer. I'm trying to get away with partially sistering a lot of the frames up past the areas of rot. On frames that are too far gone, what pitfalls would I be...
I like what I'm reading. Sounds like a good weekend project
Thanks guys ill let you know what I find out. I tried mcmaster not to long ago, didn't have much luck with the bridgewood parts there. Luckily there is a grainger close by|:)
Find me such a tree, and ill grow one for you too. Hell, ill fill the forest with them. Anywho, I'm using locust for most the framing. I've. Read some interesting things about the stuff. Anyone used...
Is anyone familiar with the bridgewood line of bandsaws/shop tools? Or better yet, know where to get parts for a bridgewood model bw-15bs? I need a new set of bearings for the lower wheels "hub" (or...
