Hello,
I'm looking at launching my 26' cruiser soon. I'm wondering if she'll swell up in cold weather as well as in warm weather. I'm in North Carolina, on Lake Norman. The lake never freezes here,...
I thought that by shutting all the breakers off including the main on / off breaker that I could at least plug the boat into the shore power (in this case yard power) without tripping their GFI, but...
Well it's October and I am still on the hard trying to work out some small issues. The biggest one is that with all of my circuits and the main circuit off, I trip the GFI as soon as I plug the boat...
Worked on it again yesterday with some PB Blaster and a much heavier piece of steel rod to drive it out with, and believe it or not, it still wouldn't budge! Tried heat and water again, still no...
Back at it tomorrow. I'll let you know. At least I now know where I can get the replacement collar.
Thanks for the info.
I think it's a bronze collar.
I was wondering if I needed something hotter than the propane tourch I'm using?
Trying to drop the rudder on my 27' Ed Monk cruiser so I can have a new cutless bearing put in. The damn rudder post is fused to the collar. I have taken both keys out, removed the set-screw, soaked...
My Father had a Concordia yawl built by Abeking and Rasmussen that was tight seamed with no caulk. He sold it and got a 40' Phillip Rhodes sloop built by Abeking and Rasmussen (1956) that I think was...
I really enjoy the NC Maritime Museum. I live on the other side of the state in Charlotte, but try to get there when I am close...They always have an interesting restoration project going on. Last...
Thanks Danny, I sistered 7 cracked frames last week and replaced 2 butt blocks. No rot yet! Probably going to reset some and reef the rest so I can enjoy what's left of the season.
Got a single screw. Perkins 108. I need to replace the cutless bearing and de winterize. It was running 2 years ago according to the previous owner...it looks clean, but looks can be deceiving, so...
UPDATE:
Been working on her every spare moment I can get and we are still moving along. Don't know if I'm going to make my August deadline to go in the water, looking more realistically like...
Wow you solved my mystery boat photo!
I saw one of these in Michigan last summer and loved the lines. It didn't have a "Sea Skiff" name plate on it and the lines are so different from most Chris...
I am trying to figure out how much of the bottom I need to recaulk on my cruiser. She's been on the hard for almost 3 years and her seams have opened up and the seam compound is falling out. Several...
Something like Zinsser B-I-N 1- Shellac White Interior and Spot Exterior Primer and Sealer?
I see they sell this at Home Depot, but it says it's for "exterior spot priming" whatever that...
Something like Zinsser B-I-N 1-Gal. Shellac White Interior and Spot Exterior Primer and Sealer?
I see they sell this at Home Depot, but it says it's for "exterior spot priming" whatever that...
I was planning on either brightsides poly or Sandusky paint's enamel.
I was planning on using either brightsides or possibly having Sandusky paint mix me up a custom semigloss color.
I am in the process of stripping all of the old layers of paint from the waterline on up on my 27' Ed Monk cruiser, using a torch.
She's planked in white cedar, which to me seems a bit grainy...
I have a 1959 Barbour Silver Clipper model which sounds like what you have. I restored her last year. Actually the lap strake planks are mahogany and the frame is mahogany too. The only oak is the...
Hey Pete, I have a 27' Monk cruiser that's been on the hard for 3 years and I've been wondering what seam compound to use myself. Petit or slickseam? She's opened up a bit.
Thanks Scott,
That crinkly hose goes to the "waste" pumpout through deck fitting.
I've admired your Stephens for some time..beautiful restoration!
Hoping an early August launch will do the trick. The yard manager is making arrangements so I can sit in the slings for 2 days...I hope that's all she needs! But I'm sure I'll be pumping for a week.
The interior is kind of torn up right now....You know when you're hunting for butt blocks everything seems to be in the way, but I'll do some shots as soon as I get it back in shape.
She's supposed...
Repaired some cockpit railing and cabin side. Now its time for a new floor. Then it's off to the topsides and bottom.
Still aiming for an August launch...I just hope that she dosn't dry out anymore...
Finally got the deck down and the steps rebuilt on the Monk.

Thanks! I'm planning on a July or early August launch.
I've been moving along on my 27' Ed Monk cruiser since I first posted here. Just wanted to document it all, now that I've figured out how to post photos.
I bought her in Jan 12' in VT and hauled her...
catyaks were fun littld boats. I was the Maumee Bay winner in 74 - 75 and went on to race in the nationals that year....l
ots of great memories!
I'd like to know too...Maybe one of the experts on here will answer...All I know is the guy with the wooden cruiser next to me at the yard is replacing his rotten frames with pressure treated lumber...
Most wooden boat owners don't think about encapsulation for boats that are already in good shape....Usually it's an owner trying to eek out a few more years of use from a tired rotted hull, which I...
Here's a 21' Carver I/O that's been banging around on Ebay for a while. Dosn't look too bad. I think it's the Monterey model....
Had a chance to go look at that Owen's again yesterday while I was at the boat yard. Hate to say it, but she'll never float again. New owner has no experience with wooden boats, boat is totally...
I grew up near by Ray Greene's boat works that were located in a couple of quonset hut type buildings by an overpass on Burne Rd. in Toledo, OH. You would always see boats, molds, and these long...
Yeah, I know. I'm friends with the yard manager and he is always "cautious" when wooden boat owners want storage in his yard. He's had so many get left or abandon....Gives the rest of us a bad name!...
The marina makes all wooden boat owners sign a waiver before they will lift the boat.
Wow, I was at the boat yard yesterday working on my boat when a 42' Owens Aruba came lumbering in on 1 screw. The yard went to lift the boat out with the hoist only to pull the front belt right...
Thanks Jim, Yes, I am replacing the first 2 set of deck beams, and of course the bulkhead for the chain locker is plywood and is delaminating too. I think that much of this happened out of water...
Beautiful boat. Reminds me of a Richardson.
Thanks everone. I located a source here in Charlotte, NC for "verticle grain" Douglas Fir from the West Coast, graded C or higher. I also think that I will go with using red lead primer instead of...
Thanks for the advice. I've never worked on a boat that had Fir. Always Mahogany and White Oak, so this "soft wood" thing is all new to me.
I posted the other day regarding my 27' Ed Monk cruiser that I am in the process of repairing.
The shelf on both sides is rotten from about amidships forward.
I'm guesing from then nice "pine"...
Been reading the posts and getting all kinds of info from this forum for over a year now, so I figured I would get off my duff and actually post something of my own....So here it is;
I just...
