Oak in what context? What may work just fine for one use may not work for some other uses.
I forget the term, but there is a 1/2" H x 3/4" W x 8" L gouge on a coaming that I need to repair on a boat I'm restoring.Quote:

If the wood is dry, epoxy should be sufficient? It'll have a clear glue line that won't stick out too bad if its varnished. Probably the most popular option?
If its going to be painted, it opens up your options considerably. (Putty & Paint makes the Devil a Saint)
Gorilla glue (polyurethanes) uses the moisture to activate, but they foam up a bit. I'm not a super fan, but they have their place.
I like tite bond 3. For most painted stuff. It's waterproof, doesn't stink, easy to handle, strong enough for most applications.
I like DAP weldwood (urea formaldehyde) for laminating things like tillers, deck beams etc. Its mixed with water, but your joinery better be spot on, it's not a gap filler... it's waterproof and very strong....it is messy though...
West GFlex epoxy is ideal. Titebond 3 is good with a tight joint, you should use epoxy if the joint is not tight.

I would use West System 105 or G Flex. Maybe with some silica or micro-fibers.

Titebond and Elmer's are mostly PVA type glue and will require 250 psi of clamping pressure on hardwood and 175 psi for softwoods with no voids between the surfaces. The same for Urea Resin Adhesives.
