FAQs / Trouble Shooting

BASIC FORUM ETIQUETTE: PLAY NICE
Reminder... by signing up to post on this Forum, you've agreed to make nice, and pages and pages of rules the greedy lawyers wrote. It all comes down to:
  • Don't be rude.
  • Don't sell stuff or services.
  • Don't post inappropriate pictures.
  • Don't whine at the Admin. He hates that.
  • Don't create a new user to come back in if you were temporarily or permanently banned. It's bad Karma.

    HOW REGISTRATION WORKS
You can login but can't post? Your registration is pending, so just chill. It's a MULTi-PART process:
...Agree to the 'be nice' terms, fill out the form, create your login/password, etc., click submit. Choose your User Name carefully. You cannot change it.
...Don't know where WoodenBoat is based? in the small town of Brooklin, in Maine.
...Check your email, click the link in that email to Activate Registration.
(If you didn't get an almost instant email from us, odds are there was a typo in your email address. Start over.)
...Notice the next message, which says you are now waiting for moderation/activation.
    ...Wait.
...Wait a bit more. Odds are you won't get approved within the hour. Maybe not even that day.
...When your approval goes through, you'll get an email confirmation telling you that you are APPROVED. It includes the user name you created, and tells you to use the password that YOU created upon registration

If registrations were instant, you'd not enjoy the Forum because of all the junk-ette stuff that would get posted.

    HOW TO SCREW-UP YOUR ACCT
Change the email address. Odds are it will blow-out your user.

HOW TO POST COMMENTS TO THE FORUM
You need to be registered, and you need to be logged-in. Then you need to be "in" one of the sections, like Building / Repair. Click that "New Thread" icon (near the upper left). A thread refers to a series of postings. Once you are in a thread, you can't create a new thread... you can only post to it... so you click that "post reply" icon.

    POSTING PICTURES
Control yourself. Avoid posting BIG pictures. Keep them 500 pixels wide OR LESS. That way the dial-up folks aren't bogged-down, and the width doesn't make the page hard to read in a standard sized window. If you don't have Photoshop, try the freebie from gimp.org.

We do NOT host your images. You need to have a place like Flickr, Imagestation, Photobucket, or one of the free other hosting outfits... or your own site.

How to link the image to the Forum page? When you go to post your entry, click on that little icon of the "mountain" image. You won't need the standard img src coding, just paste-in the URL of where you have it hosted. Code it like this: http://www.YADAYADAYDA.com/MYPIXNAME.jpg

You fill-in the host URL where I have YADAYADAYDA, and you fill in the path and imagename where I have MYPIXNAME. Another example: http://www.flickr.com/Freespirit/AtAnchor/InMaine/OnAWednesday/AMLight/concordiaatgreatcove.jpg

Flickr tip: they have a landing page for the image, but, that's not the actual image. Just right-click your image and copy the image url.

Photobucket tip: they have an auto-size program, so if you simply copy the URL for the image as it sits on your Photobucket page, it might not work. Instead, CLICK on the image (so it's bigger) and then right-click to get the image address. THAT'S the real URL. Paste that into our little mountain icon pop-up.
And, an update from Dr. Alex: - you can no longer right click to get the image address from the "landing" page. You have to click on the "all images" up the top, wait for that to load, then click on the size you want (default is large so you don't want that). Try medium, then scroll down the page past the image and the html code ("to paste into your blog") under it, to the URL for the medium image location itself, then back two steps to yer "landing" page afterwards to grab any captioning; repeat as necessary.

    SEARCHING FOR A TOPIC
The built-in search function is LESS than stellar. Instead use Google's "Advanced Search" and paste http://forum.woodenboat.com into the "Search Within a Site or Domain". It's under the "Need More Tools" section.

    CAN'T READ THE TYPE
In lieu of getting younger eyes, just try hitting "control" "+" to make the type larger and then "control" "-" to make it smaller again.

    LOGINS / PASSWORDS

FORGOT PASSWORD? Can't login and don't recall your password? Just go to post and entry, click FORGOT PASSWORD, and follow the steps. Don't ask the admin for it... we don't have it.

Logins and passwords are case sensitive... so be extra sensitive to that.

Changed email accts and you don't have access to the acct you originally used? Then just register anew.

User name already taken? Pick another. Yes, it can be a close variation.

Still can't login? If your old-forum password had characters other than letters or numbers (like an apostrophe) you'll need to do the Forgot Password. EDIT PASSWORD and it will email your new password to you.

You asked for your password to be emailed, and you never got it? Most likely you have an incorrect email. Double-check your spam filters, and if nothing, register anew, carefully typing your email address.

You've been logging in for AGES, but recently it won't allow it? Try going in from our WoodenBoat homepage: www.woodenboat.com. That will probably cure it.

VERY IMPORTANT: How to subscribe to WoodenBoat magazine.
    Click Subscriptions.

The WoodenBoat Forum is sponsored by WoodenBoat Publications.
