View Full Version : Launching Kurylko "Myst", Hull #2

I finally launched Don Kurylko's campcruiser, "Myst" at Lake Sunapee, NH on May 30th. As far as I'm aware, Jeff Saar's is the only other one sailing. Mine's name is "Rachel" (only 3 letters in Hebrew, so it fit on her shapely little transom!).
She seemed quite capable with 2 to 5 people abord. No experience yet with much over 10 knots of wind, or with single handed sailing. I've just had some bags sewn-up to hold lead ballast between the floors, so I might be reporting on that soon!
As you can see from these shots, the main yard is lying too far abaft the mast. 'Will have to fiddle with the halyard attachment.
Heartfelt thanks to Don and Jeff's patience with my constant questions over the past 4 years. http://picasaweb.google.com/BuffyB2002/MYSTPictures

Ted, she is beautiful! Tell me when you're sailing Sunapee again...I'd love to see her on the water under sail...I'm 10 minutes from George's Mills...

I'd love to go for a sail!
There was no place to leave the trailer at Georges Mills and lots of low power lines at Sunapee Harbor. We had to launch at the State Park. Because of a motor which wouldn't run slower than "medium", we almost stove in the boat on the sharp rocks which line that little canal you launch into! Oars next time. Any other suggestions?

Sorry Ted, I didn't mean to invite myself for a sail...I'm 15 minutes from the State Beach...I just appreciate boats like yours! Capt Nat

...yes, I do have a suggestion...Wellington State Park on New Found Lake...more of a drive for you (from Springfield?) than Sunapee but fewer A-Hs in over-powered "stink pots" and the ramp at the State Park is ideal for sailors...plenty of parking for trailers...

Thanks. We also happened to stop by The Squam Lakes Association in Holderness a couple of weeks ago and found them very accommodating. Besides a launch ramp suitable for trailer sailors, there were slips and areas for leaving a boat on the trailer overnight, all at reasonable prices.

Ted, it looks great! I like the tufnol blocks you used-fits the look of the boat well. I have the plans to Don Kurylko's Alaska and plan to build it next.

Thanks! The Tufnol blocks seem to be working fine. I did break down and use a couple of commercial double blocks to make a tackle for the centerboard pendant (I put a little too much lead in the centerboard (!) and made it hard for my wife to raise).
I got a chance to see Jeff Saar's Alaska in San Diego last year and fell in love!

Ted, did the Alaska look as good in person as it does in the pictures? Why did you decide on Myst instead of Alaska?

My Myst was nearly finished when I first saw Jeff's Alaska. Though I loved the Whitehall hull form, my priorities were to find a boat that might be more reassuring in a breeze. I liked Myst's ability to sail under mainsail alone or jib+mizzen if the wind were to blow-up. Alaska has a history of accomplishment, though, so there is probably no issue.

What this world needs is more Kurylko boats on the water. Nice work. I also love the fact that you built a BC-area design on the east coast.

Well done Ted! Thanks for taking a chance on an obscure west coast designer. I hope this vessel brings you much pleasure and joy. :):):)
Fair winds,

I'm already thinking about which West Coast boat to build next, Don! Thanks again!

More like demure than obscure, at least on WBF, Don!
Congratulations to both of you on a beautiful design and build!

Thanks guys! This is a proud moment for both Ted and me. I won’t mention anything about pre-launch anxiety!:D
Congrats to you both, indeed.

Lovely. And all this NH water has me really anticipating going home to New London in ten days. :)
Might be the last time, though... no family left there now.
