Hi - I am a first time boat builder, working on Joel White's Pooduck Skiff (just a little bigger but very similar to the Shellback Dinghy). I am building from plans, but these include both full size patterns for the molds, mid-ship frame transom and stem and detailed patterns (not full size of course) for the planks.
I am in the process of fitting the sheer plank and have come to a big question. This plank extends fully 3/4" beyond the (3/4") lands on the plank above for most of the length of the boat. Up until now the given plank dimensions have fit well without much or any adjustment - the planks have hit the marks on the molds, etc. If I go back to the plans and the full size patterns, at the midship frame the sheer plank is speced for about 1.5" wider than the "flat" on the frame for the plank - so with a 3/4" land on the plank above, I would get a 3/4" overhang.
Is this right? I'm inclined to just mark the plank while on the boat for a 1/4" overhang, spring a batton, and trim the extra off. but I have this nagging feeling that may not be what Joel White had in mind. Any thoughts from someone who is familiar with this, the Shellback or similar boats? If I leave that big overhand, I'll be mixing a lot of epoxy filler...
Thanks.
