Well instead of spending the day studying I've managed to waste most of it chipping away at a bit of wood kindly donated by Peter Sibley for the name plaque on my H28. So I thought I'd post some pic's.
I didn't think to take a photo of the piece before I started and only thought of it a couple of hours in, but here is where I got to today anyway (I roughed it out at home before I came back to Darwin last week):

Now I just need to convince myself that the name I have chosen is the one that I want to stick with and likewise the font before I start carving that in.
More to come when I've carved the name............:o

Absolutely beautiful Larks!!! Take your time choosing a name too....would hate to spoil such a nice bit of work with a "wrong" name :)

Thanks Peter, I've spent 12 months thinking of one that I like, just not sure what anyone else will think about it. 'My boat though so, hmm, - do I really care??? :D:p??
Bye the way, the wood is a piece of Australian Red Cedar from Peter's "Shed of Envy"!!:D

You're doing better by that piece of cedar than I would have Greg !:)
Well done ! By some coincidence I was watching a Finewoodworking magazine DVD on carving today ....some lovely work .

Excuse me mate, but, chipping away at a piece of wood, regardless of its size, looks, weight, type, place of origin, sex, race or religion, is NOT a waste of time.
You are a man of talents there Larks. I need to do a name board but it won't be that fancy, even though I own a nice set of Marples carving chisels.

I could use a name plate myself. And maybe even a rename, I hear that can change the luck of a boat - also for the better.
I don't have any gouges, and last time I used one was in shop class hollowing out a two by four. It was one of those really stupid assignments they had us doing instead of teaching us to make something nice. I actually nailed a piece of plywood on top, drilled a hole with a hole saw and made the world's ugliest ukulele. Not that I knew anything about making or playing ukuleles.
My brother in law, on the other hand, is quite the accomplished wood carver. Maybe I can commission a plate. I'm not sure if I want one on the cockpit coaming, or one on each side of the deckhouse

'Got a bit distracted from studying this afternoon so put a bit more energy into the name plaque while watching the Saints win their 15th consecutive game (Aussie rules). Had a few slips with my attention somewhat divided between the two interests and a bit of a distracted mind anyway, but managed to come out with 10 fingers and no chisel holes through wrists or hands and only a couple of minor scratches on the plaque.
Anyway, I'm reasonably happy with the outcome, particularly because it's the first time I've had a crack at carving something since I was a kid whittling bits of pine.
So to both celebrate my "accomplishment" and toast my uncle, I thought I'd better raise a glass of something suitably tasty and appropriately named:

I'll wait a bit for the oil to dry before posting a pic' of the plaque so it doesn't show my stuff ups so clearly.
Cheers all

Jolly good show there Greg! The Aussie Red looks a treat to carve and hasn't it come up nicely!! :)
Nice touch with the naming too!

Thanks Duncan, Peter, 'thought I'd better pick a name I could remember:D.
Actually, not sure if I should really divulge this, my wife the psychologist would probably have fun with it, but choosing that particular name was a bit of a strange occurrence in itself.
I had wanted a name that was a little bit fun and not too common but after 12 months of trying to pick a name with no joy, I woke up one morning a few weeks ago and that name seemed to have decided itself. I hadn't considered it previously, 'hadn't even thought of it and when I woke up from a very deep sleep one morning it was just kind of immediately…..there....No Name H28 = "Larrikin" and I no longer seemed to have much choice in the matter. Fancy that eh?? I guess that's what you get for dithering.
And no, I haven't polished off that whole bottle of whisky, school night tonight:D!!!
