Is there anyone out there who has built Youkoo-lili by Francois Vivier?

Not me but I hope YOU do. I'd love to watch one be built.

I saw quite a few in Brittany recently, you have to look closely o distinguish them from Oughtred designs of similar length. Quite fast with the lug rig.

Yeah, its a great shot. Few people were capable of making photos like that in the year 1905 ( that horrible inflatable tender is out of context:o)

Francois Vivier´s webpage is absolutely stunning with an enourmous amount of top photos.

Yes, Youkou-lili looks a lot like Oughtred´s double enders, especially the Ness Yawl but maybe its the way round. Youkou-lili was first launched in 1985.
Oughtred´s doubleenders have shorter and higher bow and stern in my eyes.

Wasn't there a thread on surfing sailboats recently? :D

hmmm. based on gunning dory? are these flatbottomed therefore? they sure have a norwegian look to them. remind me of a stretched shearwater with an additional strake.

Youkou Lili has a flat plank at the bottom, it can sit upright in the beach. Ian oughtred's double enders are wider. I get the impression they would be less suited for rowing but best for sailing as compared with YL. The rudder in the oughtred's designs can be made folding up, the one in YL is fixed but does not protrude too much...

My impression with the Youkou-lili is that it is almost--but not quite--as pretty as an Oughtred Arctic Tern or J-II. Seems to me that with the exact same stack of dollar bills on hand you could do yourself a favor and build the world's prettiest boat, rather than a runner-up.

I think Vivier is a very competent craftsman, sure. . . .but Oughtred is a transcendent artist of an even higher caliber.

on close comparison these designs are both very nice boats.
highly subjective comparisons here.
If you are considering a boat by any one of several equally comoptent modern designers including the two mentioned above you cant go wrong, you will enjoy your boat. (:

But if considering a old fashion looking charcter type open boat why not also consider the real Mc Coy a genuine historical design, faering or dory.

I am just back from a great weekend at the Small Reach and can report that the 100+ yr old William Chamberlain design I was sailing was a match or a little faster on every point of sail with the modern open boat designs, We also did lots of rowing.
John Garderner has thankfully recorded the lines of these old boats and there are sources for historic European designs as well.

Regarding the esoterics of one designer vs. another
Like modern open boats, modern violins sound as good as a Statavarius, but they arent one... but like I say which ever boat you build, it will be YOUR favorite (:
