View Full Version : fiberglassing bottom of skiff

12ft doug fir marine plywood skiff. Seams taped with 6" 6oz cloth and epoxy. As an after the fact thought...Can I cut some 6oz cloth the size of the boat bottom and lay it across the bottom of the boat and epoxy this thus connecting it with the taped edge overlap. In effect the bottom and 3 inches up the sides of the boat will be fiberglassed. She is not yet painted just taped.

Yes, absolutely. Just be sure to sand away the ridge of the tape seam first. Being fir plywood I would consider it mandatory to glass it in any case. It will check like crazy if you don't.

You might even want to take it a bit higher up the sides than 3" -- my boats always seem to find that one rock on the beach that chews up the garboard strake at 5" or so.
