I started building a Stevenson's LakeScow this spring...I got the plans from an old book that has the SkipJack, a Catamaran and this funky little thing in it.
http://angelfire.com/ego/lewisboatworks/Stuff/%20%09lakescow1.jpg http://angelfire.com/ego/lewisboatworks/Stuff/%20%C2%A0%C2%A0%C2%A0%C2%A0lakescow1.jpg http://angelfire.com/ego/lewisboatworks/Stuff/lakescow1.jpg

I modified it somewhat by adding 2" of freeboard, a bit of rocker to the hull aft and 2" more beam aft and 3 at the bow. I elected to go with a daggerboard rather than the leeboards (just because I have never used a daggerboard before) and I changed to a Lug sail because I have a brand new 75 sf one that I want to use and a couple of smaller rigs that will get used on it.

I did some more work on it today but it doesn't look like it. Most things had to come apart and then get glued and screwed back in. I know...there's a big gap between the DB and case. I did this on purpose so I could shift it around when using different sail rigs...for tuning the balance. I am going to have various plugs to fill the hole(s) depending on it's position in the case. There are 4 inches of movement to play with. I also made a shim for part of the upper DB case...this is to support the deck over the case area because there was a gap. My goof up, I wanted the case to go through the deck and get trimmed flush but I pooched it (again!)

Here is what I started with this morning. Sorry for the disjointed post but I didn't know there was a limit of pics in a single post or these would have gone under the second paragraph. This is all dry fitted together and the deck is getting a bit of pre-bending in place before going on Semi-permanently. I am going to bed and screw it in place rather than gluing so I can get back in there in case. If things go well then I'll make it permanent later...if it's necessary.

I like your Harbor Freight Trailer/workbench combo!

Neat looking boat as well.:D:D:D

Thanks...it serves the purpose for now. There isn't any room in the garage what with another hull in there and supplies and junk and junk and junk...oh...and more junk :D:eek:

I want to know where you found the boards for the
sides.

I went looking for some clear 1"X12"X12'/14'/16' pine,
fir, anything and all I got was laughs.

The best I found was a 1X8X8 at Lowes for around $50.

Anything larger is "manufactured", glued up stock and
it ain't that great, small knots. They call it "stain grade".

I may move, just so I can buy some damn lumber I
can work with.

When they do houses and want clear, they just use
poplar I was told.? "It's all painted anyway"!

Came home in a real bad mood.

A place called Menards. Picked up a clear 1x3x12' to add to the two others I had to make my mast. It cost me 8.35 with tax. It is some kind of wood from New Zealand. Pity we have to import to get decent select grade wood in this country. This is just stuff for building and trim...not any kind of exotic wood (although it ends up being that all the same). It looks like a fir or pine of some kind.

Pinus Radiata. Now I know why we can't get decent stuff here. They export all the good stuff. Originally from California I believe, grown here on vast plantations left over from when all our natives got logged. Hey, all before my time.

Actually quite the reverse...the Lake Scow predates the PD by a few decades...The copyright on the book is 1974 and I'm pretty sure they were selling plans for a couple of years before that.

It DOES say from sustainable sources. Bet we export our nicest stuff too...there's more money in it. Hope it will do for the mast. Going with 3 pieces laminated together for 2 1/2" X 2 1/4" tapering after 2 ft to 1 1/2" square. It is supposed to be 2 1/2" square at the base but I think I can get by...if not, I'll just have to make another one  .

Much done today. Started with Jamming mucho caffeine so I could stay up then I started as soon as I got off work. Mast rough cut and laminated together:

http://angelfire.com/ego/lewisboatworks/Stuff/Scowbuild/mastlam.JPG

Then I carved out one of the aft deck panels. (note: the book shows nesting them on one sheet but that gives one good side up and one crappy side up...I used two sheets of ply to get two good sides.):

http://angelfire.com/ego/lewisboatworks/Stuff/Scowbuild/halfdeck.JPG

And a different angle:

http://angelfire.com/ego/lewisboatworks/Stuff/Scowbuild/halfdeck2.JPG

I took it off and traced it then matched them together:

http://angelfire.com/ego/lewisboatworks/Stuff/Scowbuild/doubledeck2.JPG

and finally...I couldn't resist seeing it with a sail so I stuck in the old rig from my ScoutCanu (the CE is too far back I know)

Yeah...what is shown is 60 sf and the Balanced lug I am aiming on putting on it is 75 sf so a bit more aft of the mast and most ahead of it...should really scoot!

Looks like you are making some good progress. I believe I mentioned on the other forum that I had built one of these, about 20 years ago. My second boat build, in fact.
Mine looked a lot different from yours - the added dimensions make a big difference. I found that mine sailed well, except for a tendency to completely bury the bow into the back of every wave when running. Your added volume might keep that from happening.
Looking forward to seeing the finished product!

Thank you. I remember that but forget which post it was.

I added a couple of inches of rocker aft too so that will tend to lift the nose up a bit (on account of I got BALLAST :o ) and the ability of the hull to rock back on its haunches a bit.

I'm hoping to get it wet (other than rain) weekend after next at Spirit lake (north of Okoboji) It may not be complete but it should be close.

Today's update: Got the rudder blade made...going with the original for now and will make kick-up later. Sealed all the seams on the inside of the hull also. Now for the not so good news...got all the clamps off the mast and proudly extended it out in front of me...William Tell would be in heaven. The damn thing has a good 3/4 inch WONK to it   :o . PLUS...the hole and the mast are 90 deg apart in orientation...so the WONK would be to the left or the right if left as is. This means I'll have to plane down the wider sides and then glue a thickener or use a wedge so the mast will fit the partner...or cut the partner larger and laminate a smaller, correctly shaped piece on top. I had already planned on trimming the hole so that last might be the way I'll go. No pics as I don't have time today.

Well...the Scow emerged from hibernation yesterday...mounted the rudder just to do SOMETHING with it. I still have the combings to do plus finish the daggerboard and fill/sand/coat/paint. Also on deck are the spars to fab and the daggerboard wedges/fillers. The mast has the halyard sheave installed but I think I made the hole too big...the rope comes out if there is slack. I will have to fix it with a shim or two to reduce the space available.

Here is how it stands now:

Well...I have been getting SOME things done...although not as much as I would like. I got the corners knocked off the spars and shaped the Daggerboard...It came out really nice...which is very much a surprise! I am waiting on some 6 oz cloth that I ordered. I got it at a good price but shipping was more than I expected. I don't know if I like the fact that when you order...you don't get informed of the shipping. The total price is emailed to you after they calculate it. I got 20 yards of 60" 6oz cloth for 3.94 a yard but the shipping came to 28 bucks. I though it was a bit steep but what do I know? {edited to add...yes I know...the plane is as it shouldn't be...I fixed that as soon as I noticed it. Too much of a hurry to get done. I still have to get some sleep before work tonight}

Anyhoo... here are the pics of the recent progress.

Quick update...filled holes, scratches and gouges...sanded and glassed the bottom. I'll buzz down the edges and fill the weave tomorrow then flip it and start on the top. Still got to glue the deck down, make and install the combings, glass the deck, sand and paint the hull and glass the board. I also have to finish up the spars...I think they will be left raw until after the vacation...I only have 10 days to get things ready to splash it. I will probably only give it a couple of primer coats and a single coat of white then finish it after the vacation trips.

Last touch up (weave filling) spots on the hull bottom done and one side of the Dagger board tacking up as I type. I'll know better by the weekend how much I will do to the deck before I leave. I may just glue it down and hit it with a coat of epoxy then a coat of primer and one of paint. Right now I am concentrating on the bottom so it will be waterworthy. I have to sand, prime and paint in the next 3 days...along with glassing the other side of the board and coating the spars. A couple of days in the sun shouldn't harm the epoxy too much and a good sanding when I get back will be needed anyways. I may just leave the deck with a couple of coats of epoxy as a sealer and forgo the paint...less to sand down later.

Checked my email and it was wrong...changed it and it blew me out of everything. I couldn't post or edit my other posts etc. Checked with the FAQ and it said that changing email was BAD and the only cure was to re-register under a close screen name. Hence the new but familiar screen name. So if your email address changes...don't change it in your User CP...just put it in your signature or somewhere else...unless you want to change your screen name too.

Shop around for some frisbees that are tougher and more flexible. I cracked two of them just drilling the holes for the screws. I would also go with some that are a bit smaller...4-5" would be perfect. I believe these are 8"ers.

New toy...actually fairly old being a 1999 but almost pristine. This is the new Messabout tow vehicle so I don't have to use my Chevy Truck...it is getting a bit worse for the wear and the mileage isn't all that. I'll also use it on one of my jobs during snow storms and as a commuter to the other job. Getting rid of 3 other vehicles now that I have this.

And finally...the B side all done...well almost...I need to slap another coat of epoxy to fill some of the weave where it soaked in too much. A light sanding to take down some of the higher spots and it will serve until after Vacation. Man....I am sure looking forward to this. I work 350 days a year and this vacation is the reward for all that effort! Just think...in another 3 years I get another week of VA-CA. I won't know what to do with myself. When I went into the military I got 30 days of Leave the first year and every year after that. Stingy Corporate Bastages...10 years of 6 day weeks to get 3 weeks of VA-CA! Shame on them.

Okay this is a blast from the past. I started building the same design back in 1974, I think. Electrolosis has corroded some of the fastenings in my brain. I wanted a boat to really learn about sailing on the actual water. reality what a concept!

I found this design, actually my girlfriend found it, in the pages of Family Circle magazine. It was called... wait for it... "The Circle Sailor." I swear it's true and not a left over hallucination from, well you know. I was very excited about it and traveled from central Pennsylvania down to Glen Burnie, Maryland to get clear Doug fir and marine ply. I got the basic hull together in my parent's garage.

I dropped the project after I studied up on sailboat designs and what makes them go. I also happened on a ride on a schooner in Ocean city, Maryland. That spoiled me and made me anxious to get on the water. The funds saved for the remaining materials bought a small daysailer. Sold the hull to an uncle who finished it off and went fishing on placid lakes all the live-long day, end of story.

Thanks for the blast. It was too much fun and now I have to go elsewhere and write the whole tale complete with deeply meaningful subtext. Finish the build and have a ball. never listen to cynical old coots stuck in the past. Wow, a circle sailor! Just blows me away.

Lewisboater
05-31-2010, 05:46 AM
Yes...this is the old Circle Sailor although modified somewhat. Peter Stevenson (one of the designers) was as surprised to see one being built as you are. Another person on a different forum had also built one...using a daggerboard as I am rather than the leeboards. Don't get me wrong...I like leeboards for canoes and would use one (or two) on a different style hull but this begs for a DB or a Centerboard. I also added a bit of rocker to the after section...not enough to stop it from planing but enough to hopefully reduce the drag a bit. I scrapped the Lateen sail in favor of a balanced lug...simply because I have a brand new sail that I got for something else that didn't get finished (yet) and I want to use it.

Probably final update until I get back from VaCa. Got the second coat on the deck tops curing now and additional coat on the Daggerboard and Spars. I think this will have to do...no sanding...nothing else. I just don't have time. I have a Bazillion things to do in the next two days...and I still have to work until Thursday morning and leave Friday so I will have to call it good enough. I'll mount hardware probably Thursday along with get the trailer ready. If I have to I'll bring tools and finish up at the Messabout Friday evening or early Saturday morning so I can at least launch it and get one sail out of it.

WHOOOOHEEEEE!!!!!!...She FLIES! Not the best in whisper winds...though none of the other boats were either. BUT...got caught in a squall and the wind picked up to about 20-25 mph...man I was flying. Half a dozen different folks said I was planing right along and everyone was amazed at how fast it was. I didn't get too daring...I only buried the lee wing about 3 inches into the water...I wouldn't let it get any deeper. Just that little bit of rocker I put in it kept the nose up enough that only once in a while did water come over. Mainly when I wasn't paying close enough attention. Only a couple of things I am going to change...the location of the downhaul and I need a traveler with a multiple purchase...that sheet is just too taught to hold by hand. My daughter would never be able to hold it in properly when the sail starts really driving. Everything else worked a peach. Unfortunately I forgot my camera and wouldn't have had time to take any pictures anyways and I don't think anyone else got any...they were more interested in the weird little Tri that got pooped and had to get towed in by a Lund with it's nose (s) pointing skyward. This morning we went across the lake for breakfast and I beat everyone else there...including a few who got launched before me. Had a hell of a time getting back though...directly into the eye of the wind. The boat may not be too weatherly or it might be the sailor. I still have plenty to learn and the boat might not be tweaked as well as it might. Still...I call it a raging success...I didn't dump it...I got it to plane a bunch of times and I barely even got my shorts damp...my fault. Oh...and sunburnt knees.

Edited to add: Oops...forgot I want to change the tiller...too flimsy and I want to put on a hiking stick too.

I want to believe it too, honestly, but we need pictures, lots of them,in colour or black-n-white, it really doesn't matter, just as long as there are LOTS of pictures to look at.Then, you story will be far more"readable" for the illiterate like me to appreciate :D:D

Cheers!

Peter

PS, Sounds like you had a good time and adrenaline rush too!

Here are some on shore and near shore...the fast stuff was all out in the middle of the lake and I don't think anyone had time to take pictures...tending their own lines as it were. Hopefully at Rend lake I can remedy that.

from the off boat view...It sure looks like my butt is closer to the water than it did on the inside. I really didn't get near as wet as I thought I was going to...I came back after a couple of hours of sailing in up to 20 mph winds and my butt was barely damp. There is enough crown in the deck to shed water before it reaches the cockpit...even without the combing and the wings take care of any that want to splash up by the cockpit. I did get a little wet on a couple of jibes...not fast enough switching sides.

Thank you kindly...I had a blast with it these past few days whilst on vacation. I did make the mistake of going from having the sheet simply tied to the end of the boom to a 4 part tackle...which wasn't engineered quite right. I ended up dumping the boat because I couldn't spill air fast enough to keep from going over. I also wasn't thinking fast enough to get it turned into the wind as it went over...so I got to test the waters. Lovely and warm. This is my first time turning ANY boat over-ish so it was a baptismal experience of sorts. Nothing boomed me and everything was salvaged, the boat was dragged to shore and emptied out and re-sailed the next day. I will be getting pictures from various places over the next week or two so have patience. I have some but only 1 of anybody sailing. At the present moment...I need 3 hands and my teeth to sail the scow properly so I don't have any to spare for pictures while on the water. I'll post pictures as soon as I get them...and get them resized and uploaded. Meanwhile here are a few I took.

And...a couple of the attendees... This is the Apres Sail pot luck. A storm rolled in about 1/2 hour after everyone finished eating...say an hour and a half after these shots were taken. Rained on and off all night but Sunday morning was clear and breezy again...just wish I could have stayed another couple of days to enjoy it.
