question number one: does anyone know of a good wood preservative that doesn't set like evidure in the fibres of the timber, but which is more like copper napthenate but clear (minus the green colouring)? we have built the bowsprit from Quondong (it is not a durable timber but very good for the purpose of a bowsprit) and will paint the ends white but will have a mid section varnished, we need a clear very good penetrating wood preserver!?
question number two: we need to get hold of some paint product to fill the topside seams...somthing like a 'sander-filler'. the seams are puttied but have shrunk somewhat and while they will most probably punch out putty when she is in the water, we would still like to fill the ever so slight depressions prior.
we have some more photos to post when time allows but in any case, the bulwark and cap rail is complete, the bowsprit is made, the steering gear is almost done and the hull is undergoing a final sanding, we are sourching a sailmaker and work on the main cabin and fitout will start as soon as the new access ramp is in place! plus lotsa little jobs done in between!!!
we have a name for the yacht but can't tell just yet!!!!!

We have used a product call Kilz over here. It is a barrier coat for stains in ceilings of houses to hide past leak marks. It is a shellac base and can be sanded and painted over. We buy it in the local discount or lumber yard. It is really cheap but does a job in sealing the end grains of planks for 5200[I know all] so as not to remove some of the oils from the product. It works great on mahogany for priming ribs and frames in lieu of red lead.

In the same section of the Home Depots as the paint department, they also sell a clear wood sealer without the green, or try a clear deck preservative. maybe someone can give you the name of it. I can't think of it right now. But it is used extensively on outside decks and can be sanded and varnished. I will look tommorrow when I go by our lumber yard for the name and ingredient.

I have used a product called "Cellavit Water Repeller and Preservative" on the cut ends of the CCA treated cypress pine cladding on our house.

It is a clear product containing 20g/kg PCP and 18g/kg Zinc Naphthenate and the solvent in Mineral Turps.

From personal experience and after 21 years, the areas treated ( about 50mm on the end of the board) does not appear wet after rain as does the non-treated areas.

It was produced by
Cellavit Pty Ltd
Alexandria NSW

There is only one small problem, I cannot find a phone number for them!

Maybe you can mix your own.
