When I was twenty years younger I proposed to a Jung group I was a member of that we all get naked and have a sweat lodge. A lead balloon. The middle-aged women in the group nixed it. Fun, kinda funny attitudes. "We're not getting naked, period exclamation point." He.

I was coming from a place with a sauna, where everyone got naked and didn't think twice about it. Hard by a cold brook, it was good for the soul. No one thought much about being nude, and it wasn't a requirement, but if you wore a bathing suit you missed out on the full experience.

I think Europeans have a different take on this, are more at ease with nakedness. I'm not nearly as handsome as I was at thirty, but I'm ready to get naked in company again. Let's throw a sweat lodge!

30 years ago as a 20 something hippy we thought nothing of getting our gear off and jumping in the nearest creek. Now that I'm in my LATE 50s, I would think twice before I did it with a group of others...purely on ascetic grounds I might add.:D

There is a reason why we all wear clothes and it's not just to keep warm.A lot of people, out there,I really don't want to see naked.

I grew up with hippy generation parents and peers. We had a pool, we had creeks, and we went to beach all the time- oh the nude memories:eek:
Sure it is natural, but frankly, I prefer the swimsuits thank you very much. Children should not be subjected to parents, grandparents, family friends and strangers full blown and proud nudity- it wasn't good then, and unless there is something erotically gained in the process, it aint much better for me now.
If you don't have your swimmers, and you want to take a dip, then I don't mind, and in a pinch occasionally do it myself, but just hangin out in the nude sweating together?
When it is a case of not thinking about it, and just jumping in the creek or ocean, that is one thing. Often though, for most of the nudies I know, the process is very much thought about, and enjoyed in a myriad of ways, exhibitionism, and getting off on making some others uncomfortable, etc, etc.

I like clothes. It makes the times for the lack of them so much more rewarding.;)

My last sweat lodge, and it was respectfully based on Plains Indian tradition, was memorable. Two dear friends and I spent all day gathering stones, gathering wood, building the hut, making the fire. It was right on the shore of a lake that will always be sacred to me. The fellow cottagers thought we were nuts, but were also interested.

It went really well. I understand the need of native folk to keep it special and sacred. It is. But we were respectful. And I learned hence that the local Amer-Indians had sweat lodges, probably in the same place we did.

In the lodge you go to the four directions. Each direction has a totem animal. Each participant has their say. You can say as much as you want, or nothing at all. It's a form of public confession, with no pressure, but people usually say a thing or two. You're naked, sitting bare assed on the ground, a hole with hot stones in front of you and water poured on them to keep it hot and steamy.

After this one came to an end we ran out into the lake just as a thunderstorm broke. Gawd it was beautiful! We yelped, laughed, sang.

It's a fine thing.

P.S. Speaking of thunderstorms, there's one rumbling around just now. And, AND I had a lightning strike just two nights ago that had to be right outside my door. Ya know how when lightning strikes that close you can feel it? The hair on your arms pricks up, and there's crackle in the air before the flash and the boom. I don't usually get spooked by lightning, but this flash really spooked me. It was bloody close. Catawumpous, who is hard to spook, came bounding up into bed looking for succor.

Cheers, fellows.

Maybe you could get a bunch of them anti-gay marriage folks/neighbors together if you can't assemble some WBF crew.

I'd bet the Welfare Fleet Yacht Club might get naked for a moment if you were to promise to come to the cruise.

:)

I don't think this is a US/European issue. I think it has to do with cultural self-conception. As example West-Germany was more prude than East-Germany, which definitely has more to do with West-Germany being more influenced by the US and its "cultural-imperialism" (you know: US TV, US Magazines...) than the East. After the unification East Germans were very surprised that wearing clothes was/is more or less mandatory on beaches, whereas nobody really cares about clothing (or not) in East Germany. West-Germany in the minds of East Germans a "free land" suddenly appeared to be more restricted than anticipated.

It's those puritanical beliefs. We hate sex, but use it to sell everything.

The naked human body has been the subject or much art throughout history. Then we get an Attorney General who puts a cover of Lady Justice.

I agree, Martin!

Back in the day, those Eastern Euro women freaked me out! A half pint and a wink seemed to be all it took for fast, efficient clothes removal! ;)

I think that Martin is silently laughing that he managed to moon the whole Woodenboat Forum and not get in trouble for it. I think that many of us wish we could have pulled off the same thing!

Nice job.

Had a sauna on my property. A pretty little place, hippy built. The front of it was all glass, recycled windows and such. The fellow had put some thought into it. It was hard by a cold brook. A perfect place to hang out naked.

I remember a person who remains a dear friend, married to another dear friend, Katherine refusing to disrobe. She insisted, in her quiet way, to wear a bathing suit.

That was fine, no rules that way.

Our nakedness, Philip, had little to do with sex. Oh, people thought about it, but put it aside to just be naked. It's fun. Give it a try if you want.

Our nakedness, Philip, had little to do with sex.

Which is the essential truth.

For me walking around naked (as we did at that nice Mallorca Villa in the pic) is rather unsexy. I had troubles with being naked in my adolescence and I am still angry that my insensitive Hippie parents took me to nude beaches when I was 14-17. But as adult I find girls/women taking clothes off much more stimulating than girls/women casually walking around naked.

Which is why I never understood the US obsession with nakedness.

BTW: Its the same thing with nude drawings. When I studied art and did nude drawings I found out that the whole business of drawing a person without clothes is perhaps the most un-arousing situation ever.

Contrary to all those jokes, sitcom-humour and classic porn-motifs drawing takes a lot of concentration and deliberately looking at a naked body to draw it is more or less like a scientist looking through a microscope.

casual nakedness sorta messes up sex...don't know why

Not all US culture, Martin.

Has anyone supposed it lucky to be born?
I hasten to inform him or her it is just as lucky to die, and I know it.
I pass death with the dying and birth with the new-washed babe, and am not contained between my hat and boots,
And peruse manifold objects, no two alike and everyone good,
The earth good and the stars good, and their adjuncts all good.
I am not an earth nor an adjunct of the earth,
I am the mate and companion of people, all just as immortal and fathomless as myself,
(They do not know how immortal, but I know.)
Every kind for itself and its own, for me mine male and female,
For me those that have been boys and that love women,
For me the man that is proud and feels how it stings to be slighted,
For me the sweetheart and the old maid, for me mothers and the mothers of mothers,
For me lips that have smiled, eyes that have shed tears,
For me children and the begetters of children.
Undrape! you are not guilty to me, nor stale nor discarded,
I see through the broadcloth and gingham whether or no,
And am around, tenacious, acquisitive, tireless, and cannot be shaken away.

Walt Whitman

WTF
Photobucket took out this nude-drawing I did when in college. Unbelievable.
I consider it a piece of art and it gave me best notes in the final exams.
