Hopefully, before January has gone by the board, I'll be ready to start on the keel rabbet. A goodly portion is normal to the surface, and could be roughed with Dumpster Sally. Moving forward, of course, the rabbet rolls out, and chisels fall to mind as the appropriate approach. I know, I know, if I was any damn good I'd use an adz tongue.gif Aft the rabbet dimension is ~2.5" x 1", moving forward it's more like 1 x 1.

I have a motley collection of chisels, and no shoulder or rabbet plane.

Don't laugh...you'd be surprised what I do with it.

Not all of us have access to big bandsaws any more...the little 7lb arborist's saw followed by 26 grit on the belt sander can do amazing work, leaving just a tad of final fitting for chisel and slick.

Bob, that's almost like the one I use, :D 'cept I like a lot more power, think like Tim Allen, and a 28" bar, oh yah! it's gotta be red or orange! :D

I figured you were hinting at your gas-powered sculpting tool, Ken.

Rabbet planes are fine for straight surfaces, and adjustable compass planes aren't very good rabbet planes....you wind up doing almost as much slick work as you would without them cleaning out the corner they leave.

A solution would be to joint an old beech rabbet plane's sole into a convex compass plane...but you'd have to do several for all the changing radii.

And beech rabbet planes are becoming hard to find, as are the irons if you've a mind to make your own.

I am always amazed at what some can do by wielding a chainsaw... Me? I mostly scare myself or those within a 100 yards or so.

Ken, how am I ever going to augment my tool supply?

Slightly off topic, but having worked with Ken and seen his prowess first hand, and seen Bob's via the internet, and especially given Bob's family background - I hereby award you both the highly esteemed "Poppie" AKA William M Convover award. Now that's not good for a whole lot, of course, but he was the most multi-talented/gifted individual I've ever known. I think he'd give you both his stamp of approval.

Ed, I cut a rabbet on the chines of my Chris-Craft runabout that basiclly rolled from the bottom onto the side of the stock. A #90 Stanley bull nose rabbet plane was the go to tool. CM

Time to get serious, smile.gif do you have a heavy duty drill, something like a 1/2 " Milwaukee hole shooter tailed, or something as good or better - read more powerful? This just might be needed. :D

Ed,
I used a Record rabbet plane, a No. 78, I think. It worked perfect. Make sure you get Thad's advice on cutting a rabbet, if you haven't already. His tutorial email made perfect sense.

Good luck,
Matt
