The CLC Pocket Cruiser is a tidy little ship.

Now that I have JimD's attention:

It does not show up to well on the screen, but the stem and intermediate strakes are really quite purple.

If you will bring to your mind the WB Design Challenge photo, this boat is the same as the green one in back of Tom Hill's boat. It was designed by Joel White, and will be the subject of an upcoming build article in WB. Strip planked by Tom Hill.

post # 9 - that whale tale rudder. I've seen a tony dias design with that same
rudder detail before.
Goblin - Beacon NY - a beauty. I spoke to a guy from beacon a few years ago who told me he was having a boat restored/rebuilt in Maine. From his description
this must be it. He must be on his way back from maine because I haven't seen this boat in Beacon, but I'll be happy to see it across the river when she returns.

Yep. There was a good article in WB. End plates and winglets on rudders are a fascinating topic, mostly empiracle (i.e. by guess and by gosh) as chaos theory makes most turbulence analysis limited. These appear to work.

paladin
06-26-2009, 11:41 PM
Those end plates are called "splates" and in fact you can design features into them....normally they are discontinuous airfoils with negative camber used to redirect airflow/waterflow across the foil and increase efficiency. When a craft is heeled and the air/water is running at an angle across the foil you lose lift....this improves the lift across the foil.....

The weather looks fair enough but was there any wind for the Footy sailing?

Russ,

If it's possible to board the red Atkins Noble Cab (built by Alex Hadden), could you tell me if the interior is big enough for someone 'our size' to use comfortably: the forward steering station, bunks, head? Tell him I asked and he may let you look around. It may be too small to get photos, however. I'll owe you one.

Have a great time, everyone!

We did get down to Mystic today to wander around. Unfortunately, I didn't run into many forumites (My Theory, based on Anecdotal Evidence, is that the party the night before must have been an humdinger).

Bruce Hooke did go by me doing 100 mph on his bicycle. I did talk with Scot (he was easy to find) and I bumped into Dingo, which was great. He told me all about his travels. I also waved to Paul and the Bridal Party celebrating on the porch of a local establishment, but alas, I was commanded to go to Mystic Pizza to feed the kids that got too much sun. Great time and a nice warm day for a change. I didn't get much in the way of photos, but here is my offering:

Ross Brothers had a nice Charles River up for sale:

Personally, one of the great treats of having the WoodenBoat Show at Mystic (Matt, Carl - are 'ya listening?) is being able to go and have a good wander around in the Rossi Mill Building. For those who aren't familiar, the Rossi Mill is where Mystic Seaport stores all of those artifacts that they don't have room for in their exhibits. It's basically like your grandparent's attic - but packed. Those historical tidbids that are locked away in that attic are precious and beautiful in their own way. IMHO, this is an under-attended part of the show. I apologize if the pictures are a bit difficult to see - it's hard to get good pictures in there.

This gives you a good idea of the environment:

A Rushton Nomad canoe - smooth flush laps. Beautiful.

http://i40.tinypic.com/15ek228.jpg

All of the boats are kept in the condition that they were originally donated to the collection for good or for bad. Chipped paint, rot, torn canvas, and deteriorating finish is all part of the charm. Here's a bit of alligatored varnish I came across:

Two more shots of Tendress from the I-built-it-myself area. Certainly one of the best varnish and rub-out jobs I've seen in a while. You can see from the crowd around her that she was a very popular attraction.

I like Caledonia Yawls as much as anybody, but $54K for Patina is delusional. That much money should buy you two or three CY's if you had 'em built for you or about seven of 'em if you just bought the materials and built 'em yourself.

Varnish is pretty at the boat shows. . . .not so pretty if you actually use your boat all the time. I like that battered old sharpie that looks like it has been actually sailed day in and day out better than some of those high-gloss mantlepiece boats myself. Still, I guess there must be some people who really do enjoy re-varnishing as much as sailing, just as I enjoy building boats as much as using 'em so who am I to judge?

wait a min? ok are there two Patinas at this show? cause some on up thread said that sharpie was Patina.

I am now really confused.

is this thing already over? two bleeding days? what a gype.

Some of those boats take a week to just get set up. ya three days is better than two; a week would be even better.

i have this problem in museums to; not enough time in a day to go see everything.

Oooh I posted this in the bilge Ill re post here

Just some of my images of what caught my eye at the show.
Please feel free to add yours.

This little launch was lovely, I really loved the color scheme red hull light green trim and buff , just looked right & classic.

http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m320/fosterhere/photo-2047.jpg

This beautiful boat first caught my eye because of her home ports proximity to mine, She hails out of Beacon NY. But then I looked closer and saw an elegant little boat that had a lot of catboat in her.

http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m320/fosterhere/photo-2291.jpg

http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m320/fosterhere/photo-915.jpg

Then we saw a TRUE catboat

http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m320/fosterhere/photo-2311.jpg

This boat didnt need or want any varnish

http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m320/fosterhere/photo-1733.jpg

We decided to hang around after the show and get some uninterrupted classic photos. Mystic looked as it must have 150 years ago.

Is the jib on the bowsprit of Patina set flying, i.e., no forestay to the end of the bowsprit and no hanks on the jib luff?? The pulley on the sprit under the furled sail looks like it's for a running tack so the whole sail can be pulled aft to the boat when lowering the sail.

Bob,

I'm so relieved (for your sake) that Mr. Gage chose... gentleman that he is... to magnanimously take the high road.

And I suppose I can now safely confide that it don't matter which is your favorite flavor. You'll notice I said I'd make you a cake.. not send you a cake or deliver you a cake. You're much too far away for that. Chocolate is MY favorite, so I was gonna bake a Black Forest Chocolate Raspberry Torte in your honor... send you a foto to aid in your recovery... then eat it myself :D

Now I can just skip the foto, so in way we both dodged a bullet :p

On a more relevant note... Wonderful Fotos! Please keep 'em coming!

I've not heard that statistic before, but if it's true, I'll agree. Still it's amazing what you can accomplish with enough skilled and motivated people provided with a good plan the right resources.

The interpretive signs said it was built in 70 days by 51 men. Obviously 51 folk who were more talented than me.

Or motivated:D There were usually penalties attached for finishing late. These would all have been experienced tradesmen not doing it for the first time . And they didn't finish with 8 coats of varnish; she was probably rough and ready. Fifty guys is a good sized crew, after all.

Using "your" figures, here's the math: 70 days times 50 guys is 28,000 hours if all they worked was an 8 hour day! If they worked the more common 12 hour day, you have 42000 hours. That would make the labor bill for her $2,100,000 by today's standards all in. Twelve hours on, swinging mallets and adzes, chipping steadily away at her. Big hands.

Still impressive by any standard, and try building her like that today! Inconceivable.

The other thing not usually mentioned in these stats, 70 days from the keel to launch doesn't take into account the frames were often sold as a rough kit, having been cut in the Carolinas from live oak several years before. These vessels were enough alike that frame sections were nearly interchangeable. Whole vessel frames were shipped and stored, often changing owners several times as a kind of medium of exchange as vessel orders came in.

Someone who knows more or understands better can correct me if I'm not getting it right, but the explanation I overheard was that she is used for housing for one of the youth sailing/training programs. Obviously they're not sailing that boat, but staying aboard and learning navigation, seamanship, etc. It was pointed out that there's enough of the rigging left for basic demonstrations. There's a fleet of JY15's out of sight behind one of the buildings that the kids actually sail.

Oh, and I went out on the Sabino steam launch and will post pictures in a bit. :)

I've seen my pics now and Mary's - she got some great ones.

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r241/bauerdad/2009%20Wooden%20Boat%20Show/IMG_0822.jpg?t=1246288340

I had the lead there for about 2 seconds. I finished consistently second-to-last. And didn't sink. :) I'm pleased. This was my Footy's maiden voyage and I've never sailed a r/c yacht before.

I liked this shot. Note how I've assumed my next-to-last position already:

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r241/bauerdad/2009%20Wooden%20Boat%20Show/IMG_0833.jpg?t=1246288623

The Footy's got a lot of attention from the crowd. I let a few kids take turns sailing mine.

Here it looks like I'm in the lead but actually I'm hung up on a mooring line and 25 and 27 are lapping me. They were the two fastest boats I think.

I was going to suggest how different ship's supply was back then than now, with entirely different availability of materials and approaches, not to mention the difference in expectations in respect to the finished product. "Substantial completion" also means different things to different people. But we can still agree it was very different world back then, for better and worse, eh Hugh?

Sorry I missed your beautiful traditional work at the show. Always hopes for next year.....

The boats and events are great, but I would have gone for the people; cavorting with the gang was the best part for Lindy and me last year. And the lobsters of course! The boats and displays were icing on a dessert served warm and tasty.

Tom Robb....My dad came home from the Pacific in 1944 and immediately went to work building Liberty ships. He was a Master welder.....By the time he went to work they turned them around from start to launch in 6 weeks, although one vessel was built as a nearly complete demo in just under a week....although it wasn't completely outfitted.

The skiff with an attitude was a found boat. Its has and was used hard and put away wet. The owner went to great pains to disguise repairs that were needed.

I found it refreshing that the boat that won best professional had no stinkin varnish, just good paint and muted at that. And that boat would be Drake. About time that gloss was seen for what it is. Good plain elegant boat building does not need varnish especially if you are going to use it. I suspect that some of the varnished specials have not seen the time on water that Clint has already put in with Drake and know that none will be showing up at the Blackburn.

Pete Culler's Butternut - a 13' double paddle/sail canoe.

http://i40.tinypic.com/35258qh.jpg

A Rushton Nomad canoe - smooth flush laps. Beautiful.

http://i40.tinypic.com/15ek228.jpg

All of the boats are kept in the condition that they were originally donated to the collection for good or for bad. Chipped paint, rot, torn canvas, and deteriorating finish is all part of the charm. Here's a bit of alligatored varnish I came across:

The "I Built It Myself" area was tremendous fun -- crowds of people, great boats, 3 people who are building an Auk like me with very relevant questions.

If you build one, do this! You owe it to yourself.

Re: Canoez's pictures from the Rossi Mill -

During my very first visit to Mystic Seaport, I hit the jackpot! It was early in the season, so few visitors- Got to talking with one of the docents about Catboats- She made a phone call to someone, and told me to go knock on the back door. I was greeted by a very gracious man (sorry, don't remember his name). He gave a me a brief tour of the whole place, and then handed me his flashlight, pointed me to the stored Catboats, and said "have fun!" - with that, he turned and left me alone to explore and drool to my heart's content!!! Several hours later, when I met my wife (she had gone shopping), I was very dusty, and grinning from ear-to-ear! What a great time I had!

Does anybody know the gentleman who was displaying his Shellback dinghy on Saturday with his wife? It was a white Shellback w/o a rig. If he is lurking here, please get in touch with me about your rig!

Cheers, Thanks for the plug, Ben and nice comments.

A lot of people said they thought my home built Gunga Din would win for "cutest boat." Don't know how I feel abou that!

Paul - I was going for "cutest boat" too!

Of course, there was the little question of being a "real boat".

You win by a mile.

I had "Tenderness" next to me, and if you guys had been on the other side, I would have had to pack up and go home!

Thad's Sea Harmony and a Fish Class I think, though the bow looks wrong.

Also a new post at Hove to off Swan Point (http://www.sjogin.com) about the show.

Thanks again to Carl, Matt, Scot and crew for another wonderful celebration of our collective passions.

I was just enjoying Soundbounder's photos when something happened as I clicked on one of his photo sites. Multiple boxes kept coming up so rapidly I could not delete them fast enough and my computor stopped working. I am not computor literate enough to know what it means and it has taken 30+ minutes to get the damn thing working again. I did a REG CURE scan and can only hope whatever happened has been fixed. Can anyone tell me if there is now a virus, worm or whatever on my computor?

After reading the story of Winfield Lash some years ago it was one of the treats of the show to actually see her "in the flesh" so to speak

Clints wee boat was stunning... and!!! I gotta note that he even had some design work done by Micheal Storer of Aussie with lines drawings!! Pretty cool... Clints a great bloke who was a pleasure to meet and yarn with

Good to see you Carl sorry we didnt get to meet up you seemed to be all over the shop and never still enough to say gidday to but who knows next time?

For the Aussie contingent... mates Mystic is WORTH the trip over!!! Bloody amazing place some drop dead gorgeous boatwork and related "stuff" and a ton of pretty amazing people to meet (and not just restricted to forumites either)

While the sexywexy flash stuff was really stunning the workboats were the ducks knuts in my book spent more time going over some of them than anything else ;) Sea Harmony had the relaxed home feel of a well loved and used boat and Thad was a true gentleman

While Winfeild Lash was a dream... meeting and seeing some of Benjamin and Gannons work was flamin amazing... what I havent noticed anyone posting anything of yet was the work area (other than the long shot from the Morgan) some of the tools are worth having a gander at I mean that BANDSAW??? gawd talk about a monster!! I know some pics were taken by Paul and Allan but for me sadly I was so taken by the place the camera didnt come out of me pocket but twice!!! man the history the beauty the atmosphere and the whole damned thing was bloody brilliant!!

Well done to all the organizers all the participants all the people displaying and to all the amazing people I met there... thanks for the memories!!!

Just a picture hog not thinking about those with less powerfull computers.
Just reboot You cannot post 3.2 mega bite photos without consequences. Those photos should be like 480x600 pixels@ 72dpi - NOT 3,200 pixels wide.

Yes, I enjoyed the photos but thanks so much for the computor help:mad:At first I took seriously what you said.
Then I thought about it more and realized that no one else ever has had a problem that I know of. Some of them have very low powered computers too.

Unless you were trying to steal something, there should be no problem looking at any of the pages, photos, or photo galleries.
If there is a photo you want, then let me know and I will send it to you.
If you want, you can PM me and tell me exactly what photos you were interested in for yourself.

Not sure what the name of the Arey's Pond boat was. Tigress is the boat on the top of the photo. The closer boat looks to be an Arey's Pond 18' daysailor. She was quite pretty, albeit curvaceous.

ELF, I agree it looks like the Arey’s Pond daysailor. Sure seems bigger than 18’, maybe because of her curves? Sweet boat, at any rate.

Guillemot Kayaks, thanks Smartinsen. I really liked his NYMPH canoe too, showing the layup at the rails.
